BBC News3 days ago
Race organisers at Utah's famed Bonneville Salt Flats have confirmed that a veteran driver died in a 283mph (455km/h) crash while trying to break the land speed record.Driver Chris Raschke lost control of his rocket-shaped vehicle about two miles into the run, according to a statement from the Southern California Timing Association, which runs Speed Week - an event that has been running since the 1940s. Tributes are pouring in for Raschke, who took home the fastest time of the week at last year's event with a speed of 459mph, according to Hot Rod magazine. He was treated for his injuries but died at the scene, organisers say. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Race director Keith Pedersen said that his death on Sunday was a blow to the entire racing community."It's much more of a camaraderie and community, and that builds a lot of friendships and trust," Pedersen said. "He's a big part of it, and he will be sorely missed."Raschke was driving Speed Demon III, the latest iteration of the team's vehicle. The Speed Demon team said in a statement that it was "deeply devastated" by his death.Steve Watt, Speed Demon's crew chief, told BBC News that Raschke died while performing a test, known as a "shakedown", and that the car wasn't "even at half speed"."It was supposed to be a simple easy run," he said on Tuesday. "We don't know what happened," he said, adding that there was no known mechanical failure.Race announcer Brian Lohnes paid tribute in Hot Rod magazine, writing that Raschke was "a pillar of an industry, he was a skilled operator of one of the fastest wheel driven cars in history". The largest salt flat in the world
"And he was, like so many of us, fully consumed with cars and the universe around them".The glassy surface of the Bonneville Salt Flats has attracted drivers from all over the world, and has featured in films such as Independence Day and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.The prehistoric lakebed is located about 100 miles west of Salt Lake City, and saw its first motorised race in 1914.The current land speed record for wheeled vehicles stands at 763mph, set by Royal Air Force pilot Andy Green in 1997 in Nevada's Black Rock Desert. On Facebook, New Zealand's Kiwi Coupe team were among the competitors paying their respects. "Our thoughts are with Chris's family and also the whole, hurting Bonneville family...because everyone who ventures onto the salt to go fast, are family," wrote one team member. Another praised him for how he helped them resolve engine troubles, with another poster writing: "Chris will be setting records in heaven".

Cal Raleigh's 43rd homer lifts Mariners over Rays

August 9 - Cal Raleigh hit his major-league-leading 43rd homer of the season as the Seattle Mariners rallied to defeat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Friday in the opener of a three-game series. Raleigh's three-run shot to right-center field with two outs in the eighth inning off Rays reliever Griffin Jax (1-6) -- after one-out singles by J.P. Crawford and Cole Young -- gave the Mariners their fifth consecutive victory. Seattle reliever Carlos Vargas (4-5) threw one perfect inning, and Matt Brash struck out the side in order in the ninth for his second save. Brandon Lowe and Junior Caminero homered and Drew Rasmussen pitched six scoreless innings for the Rays, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Rasmussen, an All-Star right-hander who was born in nearby Puyallup, Wash., allowed just four hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out four. Mariners starter Luis Castillo gave up two runs on five hits over seven innings. The righty didn't walk a batter and fanned five. The Rays took the lead on Lowe's second-chance homer with one out in the first inning. Lowe hit a high fly ball down the right field line that Dominic Canzone appeared to make a circus catch on in foul territory. The ball bounced off the heel of Canzone's glove just before he crashed into the side wall and he reached out to grab the ball with his bare hand and pin it against his chest. It was originally ruled a catch, but Rays manager Kevin Cash asked for a review, and the video showed the ball glanced off the wall before Canzone could barehand it. Lowe hit the next pitch over the right field wall. Caminero went deep to left with one out in the sixth on a high fly ball to left that just stayed fair, making it 2-0. Mariners first baseman Josh Naylor, who left Seattle's Thursday game against the Chicago White Sox after three innings with shoulder discomfort, didn't play on Friday. However, manager Dan Wilson indicated Naylor was available off the bench. --Field Level Media

Deion Sanders gives major update on cancer treatments before Colorado coach watches son Shedeur's NFL debut

Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders is ready to get back into football again and move past the health scare that he dealt with this offseason. In recent weeks, 'Coach Prime' revealed to the world that he had dealt with bladder cancer which he received treatment for. Doctors revealed at a press conference that he is now 'cancer free' and the coach is not focusing back on the sport he loves once again. 'I'm healthy, I'm vibrant,' he told reporters on Friday at the school's media day. 'I'm my old self.' With only a few weeks remaining until the season opener against Georgia Tech, Sanders has a lot of catching up to do. That includes determining a starting quarterback amid a battle between Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and incoming freshman star Julian 'JuJu' Lewis. Whoever earns the job will be taking over for Deion's son, Shedeur Sanders. It's the first time in a long time that 'Coach Prime' will be without his son at quarterback. Shedeur is now a member of the Cleveland Browns and made his NFL debut in a preseason game against the Carolina Panthers. On Friday night, he passed for two touchdowns and guided Cleveland to a 30-10 victory. But as for this upcoming season, 'Coach Prime' is expecting change for the Buffaloes. 'We're going to win differently, but we're going to win,' said Sanders, whose team went 9-4 last season and earned a spot in the Alamo Bowl. 'I don't know if it's going to be the Hail Marys at the end of the game, but it's going to be hell during the game. Because we want to be visible. 'We want to run the heck out of the football. So it's going to be a little different, but it's going to be fun.' For Sanders, there's no particular time crunch to pick a QB. He's content evaluating one practice at a time as longtime NFL quarterback Byron Leftwich works with them. 'Cream of the crop will rise,' said Sanders, who signed a high school student with leukemia as an honorary member of the team Friday. 'It's not urgency that we've got to name this or name that. Both these guys can play. I think we can play well with either one of them.' As for his health, Sanders said he's walking at least a mile around campus every day after practice. Sanders, who turns 58 on Saturday, was away from the team over the summer for personal reasons. Last month, he disclosed he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of bladder cancer. But after surgery his oncologist considered him cured. 'I'm loving life right now,' said Sanders, who's drawn headlines for his health in the past, but with the focus largely on two toes he's had amputated and concerns over blood clots. 'I'm trying my best to live it to the fullest, considering what transpired.' His coach's determination inspired left tackle Jordan Seaton. 'It's like, 'OK, my health, I can possibly die from this but I'm going to fight this to get back to you all,' Seaton said. 'He's the most selfless person I know. So for me, it's just take it and do what I can on the field and pay it forward.' One thing Sanders has learned heading into his third year with the Buffaloes is to trust his instincts. 'Year one, I would be on the sideline and I would feel something, and I didn't go with my instincts,' Sanders said. 'Year two, I went with my instincts, and now I'm going to even go more with with my instincts. 'But I feel like our staff gets better and better and better every year. I feel like the roster gets better and better and better every year.'

Shedeur Sanders shines on NFL preseason debut as LeBron takes notice

Rookie Shedeur Sanders' NFL preseason debut was so impressive even LeBron James took notice. Sanders completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes in the first half to Kaden Davis on Friday night as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Carolina Panthers 30-10. 'That young [man] looking good out there,' James posted on X. 'Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high.' That young 🤴🏾 looking good out there! @ShedeurSanders Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high 🙌🏾🫡 The four-time NBA champion followed up with another post, adding 'And I don't wanna hear that 'It's only preseason' bs. Cause if he was out there not going in y'all would be on his ass about it! So give credit and grace lames.' Sanders, a highly-rated draft prospect who endured a dramatic fall into the fifth round in April, entered the game fourth on the Browns depth chart, but was pressed into starting duty because of injuries. His status could change after he led three touchdown drives in nearly three full quarters of action, showing tremendous poise and awareness in the pocket. Sanders said he's not worried about how the depth chart shakes out. 'When I get out there it's just doing what I gotta do,' Sanders said. 'Everything else is not in my hands, so I don't worry about it. I just don't think that deep into everything because it's nothing you're gonna be able to control. So why put energy in something that you can't control?' Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he was pleased with how Sanders played, but said it's too early to know if he will get more reps in practice or start the next preseason game against the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in what is viewed as an open quarterback competition. 'I'm honestly not focused there,' Stefanski said. 'I think the guys need to continue to earn their roles. That's what these guys are doing.' While Sanders played into the third quarter, counterpart Bryce Young had a quick, but effective night for Carolina. Young played two series and completed 4 of 6 passes for 58 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Coker to give Carolina an early 7-0 lead. Coker, who is battling for a roster spot after a solid rookie season, had an impressive night, also hauling in a long pass with one hand while a defender had ahold of one of his arms, although the play was called back on a penalty. But this night belonged to Sanders. After failing to score in his first three possessions while facing Carolina's starters, Sanders began to heat up against the second team in the second quarter. The Browns caught a break when they recovered a muffed punt return by the Panthers at the Carolina 10. Two plays later Sanders fired a seven-yard TD strike between two defenders to tie the game in the second quarter. After a couple of nifty runs and throws, Sanders found Davis again over the middle for a 12-yard score to give Cleveland the lead with 1:04 left in the first half. Davis finished with three catches for 23 yards. Cleveland stretched its lead to 21-7 in the third quarter when Gage Larvadain scored on a jet sweep from four yards out. The Panthers managed just 251 yards on offense to go along with six penalties for 60 yards and two turnovers. 'Part of our play style is playing smart and I don't feel like we did that,' Panthers coach Dave Canales said. Panthers second-year wide receiver Xavier Legette had a short night after getting ejected early in the first quarter when he threw several punches at Browns cornerback Rayshawn Jenkins after the two got locked up in a block well after the completion of a play. 'You can't have that,' Canales said. 'As soon as you throw a punch, we are at a disadvantage.' Jenkins, who eventually ripped off Legette's helmet, was also ejected from the game.
