Maharashtra, Bengal CMs express grief over Uttarakhand helicopter crash
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday expressed grief over the tragic helicopter crash in Uttarakhand's Rudraprayag district that killed all seven people on board, including a toddler. The chopper, en route from Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi, crashed and burst into flames in a densely forested area near Gaurikund early Sunday morning. The ill-fated flight, a Bell 407 helicopter with registration number VT-BKA operated by Aryan Aviation, was flying a short 10-minute route between Shri Kedarnath ji and the Aryan Helipad in Guptkashi when the incident occurred. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis extended his condolences over the loss of lives, particularly the three victims from his state. In his message on X, he wrote, "Deeply pained by the tragic accident where passengers lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Gaurikund in Uttarakhand this morning while travelling from Kedarnath to Guptkashi. Among the victims were devotees from Maharashtra as well. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We stand in solidarity with all those affected." According to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the victims included six pilgrims -- five adults and a 23-month-old child -- hailing from various states, including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The deceased were identified as Captain Rajbir Singh Chauhan, a pilot from Jaipur; Vikram Rawat, an employee of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC); Vinod Devi and her granddaughter Trushti Singh, a pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh; and a family of three from Maharashtra -- Rajkumar Jaiswal, his wife Shradha Jaiswal, and their daughter Kashi Jaiswal. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took to X and offered her condolences over the tragic accident. Taking to social media platform X, Mamata Banerjee said, "Most distressingly, another civil aviation tragedy reported today morning, this time from Uttarakhand, in the Kedarnath - Gaurikund - Guptakashi region. 7 people were on board in the helicopter including a child and the pilot, and there has been a reported crash with worst being feared by media. While we await the results of rescue and search operations, my prayers go out for each one on board." In response to the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken precautionary steps by reducing the frequency of helicopter services to Char Dham. The agency is also conducting enhanced surveillance of helicopter operations in the region and is reviewing all procedures for potential safety upgrades. The tragic crash has once again raised concerns about the safety of helicopter operations in Uttarakhand's treacherous high-altitude zones, particularly during the ongoing Char Dham Yatra.

Bengal LoP Accuses Police Of Illegally Entering Bankura BJP Office In The Night
KOLKATA: The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Sunday accused the state police of sneaking into the BJP's party office in Bankura district like 'thieves and dacoits' and attempting 'to break the gate and barge in under the cover of darkness'. According to him, such an attempt by the Bankura district police happened at around 2 a.m. on Sunday, and the perpetrators were cops from the Khatra and Bankura Police Stations. 'This shameless display of so-called 'power' was met with fierce resistance from our brave BJP Karyakartas and local Leaders, who stood firm against this cowardly act of intimidation. Is this what Mamata Police have been reduced to; sneaking around in the dead of night to harass opposition workers while turning a blind eye to the real criminals?' said Adhikari in a statement he posted on his official X handle. According to the LoP, the same state police chose to remain inactive when it came to the question of taking action against a leader like Anubrata Mondal, who was recently heard in a viral video threatening a police officer from Birbhum district "to rape his mother and wife". "Where is this bravado when it comes to taking action against TMC's notorious 'lumpen' Anubrata Mondal? This is the same Police force that cowers when faced with TMC goons and their lawless antics. Just weeks ago, an audio clip surfaced of Mondal hurling vile abuses and threats at Bolpur's Inspector-in-Charge, targeting his wife and mother with obscene remarks. Yet, what did the SPINELESS Police do? NOTHING,' Adhikari's statement read. LoP Adhikari, at the same time, also questioned the role of police during the recent clashes between two groups at Maheshtala in the South 24 Parganas district last week. 'One can't forget the SURRENDER gesture made by the Mamata Police in Maheshtala a couple of days earlier waving white handkerchiefs towards the stone-pelting Jihadists. Bloody Cowards,' Adhikari said. At the same time, he added that during the communal violence and riot-like situation in the minority-dominated Murshidabad district in April this year, the district police forces took shelter in shops when faced with the rioters. 'The people of Bengal deserve better than a Police force that flexes its muscle against the Opposition and commoners but turns tail when confronted by TMC's goons or other lawbreakers who are under the shelter of the TMC Party. This is not Law Enforcement, it's an act staged by Clowns, who have lost all respect from the People of West Bengal," Adhikari's statement read. While condemning the police for attempting to illegally enter the party office at night without valid reasons and documents, Adhikari also shared a video where the policemen can be seen inside the office and arguing with the workers.

Violence returns to WB jute industry, manager assaulted
Violence returned to the West Bengal jute industry on Saturday (June 14, 2025) after a senior official of the Auckland Jute mill, located in the State's North 24-Parganas, was assaulted. The management of the Jute mill put a suspension of work notice, putting at stake the livelihood of around 4,000 workers. Sankar Debnath, the official of the jute mill, was allegedly assaulted by a group of workers. Mr. Debnath was hospitalised after the assault. The attack, which took place outside the mill premises, was caught on the closed-circuit television cameras. According to reports, tension was brewing between a section of workers and the management of the jute mill located under Jagatdal police station for past few days which resulted into the violence. Former Barrackpore MP and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arjun Singh accused the Trinamool Congress for the violence and suspension of work. 'An internal rift is going on among the TMC backed criminals over the share of the extortion money. Because of the internal feud of TMC criminals, a Bengali Hindu Sankar Tarafdar was attacked in the Mill premises by the criminals belonging to the VOTE BANK of@MamataOfficial. The mill has been closed and about 4,000 labourers are jobless now,' Mr. Singh said on social media. The BJP leader also added that hundreds of Bengal Global Business Summits ( annual event of WB govt to attract fresh investment to the State) will bear no fruit if the law and order remains like this where the goons rule, not the law. Jute mills which are located on the banks of Hooghly around Kolkata around Kolkata have been source of employment of workers for almost over a century. Occasionally the industry struggles with closures and suspension of work. About 10 years ago, the CEO of Northbrook jute mills in Hooghly's Bhadreswar was beaten to death by agitating workers. West Bengal still remains the highest producer of jute in the country. In 2023-24 West Bengal registered a yield of 2883.20 per hectare and 7865.70 in bales. The Jute Corporation of India (JCI) has increased the minimum selling price (MSP) of jute from ₹5,335 to ₹5,650 per quintal for crop year 2025-26 to discourage distress sales by farmers.
