After eight decades of running a lauded master's programme, TISS finally added a four-year bachelor's programme last year. Known for giving equal weight to people and practical skills, the institute has recently prioritised the research component by allotting it additional credits.
Learning from an experienced faculty: Thirty-seven professors have spent over two decades teaching and also possess field experience. Last year alone, they collectively published 52 articles in international journals and 40 in national journals, in addition to authoring six books. The pedagogy is designed not just to make lessons engaging but also to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving.

Currently, TISS SoSW Mumbai has 300 fieldwork partners across the country—from state government departments and civil society organisations to non-governmental organisations and communities—working to make an impact.
TISS holds credence among various stakeholders, including the government and judiciary. The Bombay High Court recently praised its report on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (South), which examined the impact on fisherfolk, while its professor, Dr Pekham Basu, was appointed to a Supreme Court committee investigating a POCSO-related matter. Additionally, its Field Action Projects, such as the Special Cell for Women initiative, run in collaboration with the Mumbai Police, place and train social workers within the police system to provide psychosocial-legal support to women facing violence. The model has since been replicated in several states.

Before NGT hearing, its team to assess UT's waste reality
Chandigarh: With the motive to inspect current status of both solid and liquid waste management in the city, a team from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is expected to visit Chandigarh. Though the exact date of the visit is yet to be officially informed, sources revealed that the team will come to the city either in the third or fourth week of August. The development is crucial because the hearing of the Chandigarh-related cases of waste management is scheduled before the NGT in the second week of September, where the MC will have to submit the progress report of each aspect of waste management. Since the NGT team comprises a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) member or scientist along with other technical officials, the team will physically visit the prime waste management sites, including the sewage treatment plants (STPs), garbage dump sites, and choes. After visiting and assessing the waste management, the team will submit its report to the NGT before the hearing. "Though clearing the legacy waste is taking some time due to the monsoon season, except for this, we have done all work and achieved 100% results in the management of both solid and liquid waste. Moreover, the Chandigarh municipal corporation has also started preparing reports to submit before the NGT regarding works done for both solid and liquid waste management in the city. "Since different departments are looking after the works related to waste management, they have been preparing their reports that will be shown to the NGT team and subsequently to the tribunal during the hearing that is scheduled in September. " In the recent NGT review meeting, the chief secretary of Chandigarh administration lambasted the MC for not clearing the legacy waste by July 31, set deadline for the work. The MC set a new deadline for the end of September to clear this piled-up waste, but the chief secretary expressed dissatisfaction with the new deadline and instructed them to clear the dump as soon as possible. Though the MC officials explained to the chief secretary during the review meeting that constant rains during the ongoing monsoon season played a major role in hindering progress, the chief secretary asked the MC to fulfil the work soon despite any hurdle.

One was a young officer, the other had just embraced fatherhood - two Indian Air Force pilots were killed after a Jaguar fighter jet crashed in Rajasthan's Churu district on Wednesday afternoon. The aircraft was on a routine training mission when it went down around 1:25 pm in an agricultural field. The tragic incident marks the third Jaguar-related crash in the last five months, raising renewed concerns about the ageing pilots, Squadron Leader Lokender Singh Sindhu (31) and Flight Lieutenant Rishi Raj Singh (23), were both known for their dedication and professionalism. One had just embraced fatherhood, while the other was only beginning what promised to be a bright career in the skies. Despite the tragedy, locals and eyewitnesses recall that the pilots appeared to have steered the jet away from residential areas—possibly saving many lives on the ground.
