Toyota Hilux tops the chart as the most stolen four-wheeler in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: The Toyota Hilux was the most stolen four-wheeler in Malaysia last year, with 370 units reported stolen.
Vehicle Theft and Accident Reduction Council (VTAREC) coordinator Mas Tina Abdul Hamid said this was based on statistics from insurance companies.
The second and third most stolen four-wheelers were the Proton Wira (142) and Toyota Fortuner (123).
This was followed by the Proton Iswara (92), which was tied with the Proton Saga (92), Perodua Kancil (89), Ford Ranger (79) tied with the Perodua Myvi (79), Perodua Bezza (61), and Honda Civic (58).
"If we look at this chart, we can see that many of the models are Proton and Perodua, and these are older models, which we believe were dismantled and used for spare parts.
"Usually, locally manufactured vehicles are dismantled and the parts resold within the country," she said during a briefing at the soft launch of the VTAREC 2025 public awareness campaign on vehicle theft and road accidents.
Mas Tina said other branded vehicles in the list were likely smuggled out of the country.
Meanwhile, the top 10 most stolen motorcycles last year were the Yamaha 135LC (528), Yamaha Y15ZR (327), Honda Wave (194), Yamaha 125 (109), Honda C100 (105), Yamaha Lagenda (72), Yamaha Ego (59), Honda EX5 (54), Modenas Kriss (48), and Honda RS150R (16).
Mas Tina said the vehicle theft trend in Malaysia had decreased by 10 per cent, with 3,925 cases reported last year compared with 4,370 in 2023.
She said the thieves' modus operandi had evolved, with many now hacking the key fob — a small handheld remote control device that operates a remote keyless entry system.
This keyless system allows thieves to unlock the car, start the engine, and drive away without needing a physical key.
Mas Tina advised drivers to keep their keys in a Faraday pouch, which blocks radio waves, and to adopt traditional safety measures such as using a steering lock.

Proton e.MAS 5 Premium revealed: 40kWh battery, rear-wheel drive, CarPlay and full ADAS suite

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 8 — The official specs for Proton 5 has been revealed, just as Pro-Net kicks off the nationwide Misi 5 preview tour for the new EV. In addition to that, we were also given access to the interior of the new B-segment electric hatchback. However, the access was quite brief, at just 15 to 20 minutes, so we tried to learn about the 5's features as best as we could during the short preview time. We also get to see the unmasked exterior of the new EV, but we are not able to show it properly because there is still some work that needs to be done, according to the folks at Pro-Net. Circling back to the specs, only the details regarding the 5 Premium variant was officially revealed at this juncture. As per our initial encounter with Geely Xingyuan back in Shanghai, we noted that it has two variants, and this will likely apply to the 5 as well. Given the naming scheme of 7, we expect the lower-end version to be called 5 Prime too. Of course, that's a story for another time and let's jump straight into the 5 Prime details. Proton 5 Premium battery, charging, range For starters, the Proton 5 Premium is equipped with a 40.16 kWh LFP battery from CATL. This allows the EV to deliver up to 325km of WLTP-rated range. In terms of charging, we were told that the 5 Premium can support a DC charging speed of up to 71kW. The Pro-Net representative also said that it takes around 21 minutes of DC charging to get the EV from 30% to 80%. At the same time, the 5 Premium also supports single-phase AC charging of up to 6.6kW. The current version of the specs sheet that we have did not say whether this EV will offer Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, but since it is based on Geely Xinyuan, we will not be surprised if the feature makes its way to Malaysia. Proton 5 Premium performance As it is designed for budget-conscious customers, the 5 also comes with rather modest performance figures. The Premium variant is equipped with a single 85kW (~114hp) electric motor that also produces 150Nm of torque. In terms of acceleration, we were told that it can go from 0 to 50km/h in 3.9 seconds. Yes, you saw that right – a 0 to 50 acceleration figure. Interestingly enough, the 5 is a rear-wheel drive car which allows the EV to have a tighter turning radius of 4.95 meters. In addition to that, the Premium variant also features multi-link rear suspension alongside MacPherson struts on the front. Proton 5 interior Interior-wise, you are looking at leatherette seats, both front and back, in white. The pre-production unit that we saw has manual adjusters, though, so it is unclear whether this will be the exact version that will be fitted to the 5 Premium. After all, we were told that the 5 Premium will have a dual-tone roof, and the unit on display was monotone instead. Nevertheless, these seats are quite plush and comfy, especially the front seats, which felt rather snug even though they are not sport seats. Similar to the 7, the 5 also has a storage area underneath its rear seats. However, the implementation is slightly different as it appears that there's no built-in tray as opposed to its SUV sibling, and it can also hold up to 28L of items. When it comes to the boot, the 5 offers 375L of space, which can be further extended to 1,320L when you fold down its rear seats. The Premium variant also features the handy powered tailgate function, and last but not least, the EV also has a massive 70L frunk. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at launch One of the most common questions we have heard these days whenever there's a new car being launched, regardless of the brand, is 'Kereta ni ada Apple CarPlay dengan Android Auto ke?'. Hence, media members also really love to throw this question to Proton, but it appears that the national automaker seems to have no problem with it for the newer models. As per the newly launched 2026 Proton X50, the Proton 5 will also have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at launch. This functionality will cover both wired and wireless connections. Even though the user interface may look the same, the operating system on 5 is Atlas Auto instead of Flyme Auto as per Geely Xingyuan. Yes, this EV not only feature the Bahasa Malaysia's voice assistant, Aishah but also carries the same 14.6-inch infotainment display as per X50. Of course, being an EV under Pro-Net, the 5 comes with an integrated live charging map and support for App. While we didn't have enough time to test its output quality, the 5 Premium also has a 6-speaker audio system. Proton 5 Premium Advanced Driver Assistance System Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is something that has already become a norm as of late, and even a B-segment EV like 5 also has it. For the 5 Premium variant, here's the list of its ADAS features: Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Rear Collision Warning (RCW) Lane Departure Warning (LDW) Lane Change Assist (LCA) Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) Front Vehicle Departure (FVD) Blind Spot Detection (BSD) Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) Door Opening Warning (DOW) As you may have noticed, this EV does not come with Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), unlike the 7. Meanwhile, the 6 Premium also features 6 airbags, a 360-degree camera system, and rear parking sensors. In addition to having Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), there is also the G-TCS anti-slip and anti-skid system. It is apparently designed to reduce wheel slippage on low-traction surfaces and also helps reduce the torque response time on the EV. — SoyaCincau

Proton reveals e.MAS 5

PROTON has offered a first glimpse of the forthcoming 5, the second vehicle in its electric vehicle series, marking a significant step in the national carmaker's electrification strategy. Although the full car remains partially concealed to preserve anticipation, the preview unveiled several technical and design details that signal Proton's ambitions in the affordable EV space. Two variants will be available at launch: the Prime and the Premium, each offering different battery capacities supplied by CATL. The Premium version is fitted with a larger LFP (lithium iron phosphate) battery, delivering an estimated driving range of 325km, while the Prime is equipped with a smaller unit, offering approximately 280km on a single charge. Despite its compact exterior, the 5 surprises with its spacious interior. Proton claims the model comfortably seats five adults, made possible by the EV's flat floor design, which allows for greater legroom at the rear. This was validated during on-site testing, where five larger-framed individuals were able to sit with ease and ample room. Stylistically, the car embraces a minimalist, rounded silhouette with smooth contours and aerodynamic elements reminiscent of the SMART range. Design highlights include feather-like LED headlights, 16-inch aerodynamically optimised wheels, and semi-concealed door handles. The Premium variant adds a dual-tone roof for a floating visual effect, enhancing its aesthetic appeal. The interior is centred around a 14.6-inch high-definition touchscreen display, powered by an automotive-grade processor and offering support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Voice recognition is available in both English and Malay through Proton's ATLAS Auto system, shared with the latest Proton X50. A crystal-style gear selector and two-tone steering wheel add a touch of sophistication to the cabin. Storage space is another strong suit of the 5. With 32 compartments throughout the vehicle, owners will find ample places to stow everyday items. The boot offers 375 litres of space, expandable to 1,320 litres when the rear seats are folded. One of the standout features is the 70-litre front trunk (frunk), which includes hydraulic struts for added convenience. Charging infrastructure concerns have been addressed with the inclusion of a real-time charging map. Fast charging is efficient, with the battery able to charge from 30% to 80% in just 21 minutes. Although the 5 is not performance-focused; it is agile where it matters most, and it accelerates from 0 to 50km/h in 3.9 seconds, ideal for urban traffic manoeuvres. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via a single electric motor, supported by a rear multi-link suspension setup for improved ride comfort and handling. Safety has also been prioritised, with six airbags and an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) suite comprising 12 intelligent features, including adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, and lane departure warning. To introduce the 5 to Malaysians nationwide, PRO-NET has launched the MISI 5 preview tour, which will visit five major regions across the country. As Proton prepares to enter the competitive compact EV segment, the 5 is positioned as a practical, tech-savvy, and family-friendly offering aimed at accelerating local EV adoption.

Genting road rage caught on dashcam sparks public outcry

KUALA LUMPUR: A dashcam video showing a fight between two motorists in Genting Highlands has gone viral, prompting calls from the public for police to investigate. The incident, recorded on Sunday, shows a Honda being driven erratically, at times blocking two lanes, while closely followed by a yellow Proton Satria. The footage later shows three vehicles pulling over to the roadside, including the dashcam owner's car. The drivers then exit their vehicles, and the Honda driver is seen punching the Proton driver, sparking a scuffle. The person who recorded the video is then seen attempting to break up the fight. While the circumstances leading to the fight are unclear, the video's caption accused the Honda driver of being a "gangster looking for trouble" and included the car's licence plate number. The video has garnered more than 50,000 views, with many social media users urging police to take action. Genting Highlands is a popular hilltop resort destination in Malaysia, known for its cool climate, casinos, theme parks, luxury hotels, and vibrant entertainment scene.
