Why somersaulting Rishabh Pant is a box-office superstar in traditional Leeds

Indian Express21-06-2025
Anyone who was at Headingley on Saturday, be it English, Indian or neutral, would tell you why Test cricket needs the delightfully entertaining and daringly innovative Rishabh Pant. Centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill on Day 1 were high art, they were exhibits of cricket correctness, the kind fans in these are part have appreciated for centuries.
But on Day 2, at the home ground of England's most traditional county, Yorkshire, Pant put up a show that had sights and strokes, the locals would have imagined, forget seen. Pant, unbeaten on 65, took a little more than an hour to be India's third centurion as the visitors continued to flex the batting muscle. He scored a box-office knock of 134 from 178 balls. This was followed by an anti-climax of wickets falling in a clutch. At lunch, India were 457/7. The cloud was overcast and the bowlers were smiling again but not everyone was mesmerised by the Pant magic.
Monumental batting efforts by the visiting team can get boring for home fans but not on days when Pant is sauntering on the 22-yards as if he owns this prime property. Like a daily soap, his batting has twists with the unexpected always round the corner. It is this anticipation that makes the Indian vice-captain a charismatic character and fan magnet.

Like he did at Headingley, he can suddenly rush down the track to take a crack at the ball as if he wanted to rip the leather off it. Also he could pull out from his bag of tricks, something unseen that can drop the jaw of the partisan and aloof cricket fan.
How can a cricket fan be unimpressed by his tumbling 'semi-sweep, semi-scoop' to the fine-leg area or the single summersault he came up with after completing his hundred. That signature Pant shot and his unique celebration had even Barmy Army stand up and applaud.
It was a ball from off-spinner Shoaib Bashir pitched on the leg-stump. There was a leg-slip in place and also a widish fine leg too, enough protection for any Pant adventurism. But these were conventional field settings for text-books not for a man with the habit of taking detours to the less-travelled path.
Pant first came inside the line of the ball and went down on one knee, the same one shattered during his horrific car crash in December 2022, and waited for the ball to bounce. Once it did, he helped it over the leg slip and while doing so landing in the crease on his back and rolling over. On the Test Match Special, former England international Isa Guha, would instantly come up with an apt name for the shot โ€“ 'It's a roly-poly' shot', she screamed. There was commotion in the stand, everyone wanted to say something about what they just saw. Those who missed would crane their necks to watch the replay on the giant screen.
EFFORTLESS! ๐ŸคŒ

With such a buzz around the ground and drama in the air, the other entertainer of the field, English captain, Ben Stokes, rushed to the big stage. He couldn't allow Pant, in 90s now, to take the spotlight all alone. His second ball was a nasty bouncer, Pant couldn't have been intimidated by the aggression. He swung his bat but missed. The Barmy Army, sniffing a contest, launched one of their chants. They were roaring, they wanted more. But soon there were drinks, it was the most untimely break. Pant was 98.
After the drinks, Stokes was bowling to Pant again. Interval over, the story continued. Pant has 7 hundreds but he has been out 6 times in 90s. He has thrown away hundreds many times as he is too committed to his brand of batting. But today, he was slightly pragmatic โ€“ just for that one Stokes over.
After taking a single on the sixth Stokes ball, he was ready to face Bashir, a simpler task On the very first ball, he stepped out to hit a one-handed six. He then for a brief moment, kept a distance from his captain. He would drop his bat, take his gloves off and come up with a somersault. A gymnastic judge would give it a modest 6 but Headingley would call it a perfect 10. No one could have sat on the seat, everyone stood up to give a standing ovation to Test cricket's modern-day daredevil.
But it shouldn't be confused that Pant is a happy-go-lucky slam bang Test cricketer. His batting is a combination of great skills, great hands and a deep understanding of a bowler's psyche.
An anecdote from the famous 2021 Border Gavaskar series explains how the thinking cricketer decides to go for his audacious shots. It is when the bowler's expect the least. There is a method to his mayhem.
Facing the GOAT offie Nathan Lyon early in the innings, Pant got a delivery that on the leg-stump and deviated devilishly towards slip. An amused Lyon smiled, Pant showed no emotions. But the next ball he jumped out and dispatched it out the boundary.
'Top bowlers don't think that a batsman will take a chance after the ball has turned that much. But mere dimag mai alag hi planning chal rahi thi (I had a different plan running in my head). Agar mere area mai ho toh, I will hit. More so since he didn't expect me to do so,' he would later say.
That's Pant, the man who gets into the minds of his rivals and heart of the fans. Test cricket doesn't have many who can get crowds on their feet at both home and abroad.

Sanju Samson prepares for Asia Cup 2025 with Kerala Police athletes, India star says โ€˜not easy' amid rumours of RR exit

Amid rumours of him leaving Rajasthan Royals in Indian Premier League (IPL), Sanju Samson is gearing up for Asia Cup 2025 in an 'hard' way by training with the athletes from Kerala Police. Although the Indian squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is yet to be finalised, Samson, who is set to be first-choice wicketkeeper in the UAE, is leaving no stone unturned for be in the perfect shape for the multi-nation competition. Samson had been in the headlines for quite sometime as the Rajasthan Royals is tipped to leave the IPL franchise after eight years. Taking to Instagram, Samson posted a picture of him relaxing with the Kerala Police athletes at Chandrashekaran Nair Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. Sanju Samson's Instagram story. Samson had been in top form since October last year, smashing three hundreds within a month. The last time Samson played for India in T20Is was during the five-match home series against England, just before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 where he managed just 51 runs. According to several reports, the India squad for the Asia Cup 2025 is set to be picked up by BCCI within August 19 or 20 as the Indian board awaits fitness reports of players from the BCCI medical team at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). However, Samson didn't had a great IPL 2025 as the Rajasthan Royals skipper battled injury during the whole tournament. He played as a pure batter in the first three games, before being ruled out towards the end of the tournament. In nine matches in IPL 2025, Samson could only score 285 runs with a highest of 66 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

'Administrators Are Brought In To...': Sunil Gavaskar Slams ECB For Snubbing Sachin Tendulkar, James Anderson In Trophy Presentation Of IND vs ENG Test Series

Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has criticised the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for not inviting Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson to present the trophy named after them, after the end of India vs 2025 England Test series. The newly minted Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series played between India and England ended in a 2-2 draw. However, neither Tendulkar nor Anderson were present during the trophy presentation ceremony despite both being in England at that time. The 76-year-old Gavaskar questioned ECB's conduct and drew parallels to what happened earlier in the year in Australia, where he was not included in the presentation ceremony and it was just Allan Border who presented the trophy at the end of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. "This was the first-ever series named after Sachin Tendulkar and Jimmy Anderson, two of cricket's greatest legends. One would have expected both to be present to hand the trophy to the two captains, especially since the series ended in a draw," Gavaskar wrote in his column in the Sportstar. "To the best of one's knowledge, both were in England at the time. So, were they simply not invited? Or was this similar to what happened in Australia earlier this year, when only Allan Border was asked to present the Border-Gavaskar Trophy because Australia had won the series? Since this England series was drawn, perhaps neither was asked to attend the presentation," he added. The legendary batter was also not pleased with the practice of giving the newly instated Pataudi medal to the winning captain of the series instead of the player of the series. Notably, India captain Shubman Gill and England skipper Ben Stokes were both given a medal each with the series drawn 2-2. "Mostly around the world, administrators are brought in to ensure profits and are quite good at it, but they may not have much knowledge about the history of the sport they are presiding over. So, these little gestures are not in their scheme of things. Nobody from the Pataudi family was there either, for the Pataudi Medal, which was to be presented to the winning team's captain," Gavaskar wrote. "The drawn series showed how foolish this idea was of trying to make amends to the Pataudis by retiring the trophy named after them. Every time the series is drawn, the medal can't be presented, can it? Wouldn't it be better, therefore, to award the medal to the Man of the Series rather than the winning team's captain? And what if the captain himself had an ordinary series and little impact on the result? If there had been a result and the Pataudi Medal had to be given to the Man of the Series, it would have been a tough choice, for both skippers were simply outstanding," he added.

Team India captain Shubman Gill gets MASSIVE honour after success on England Test tour, he has beenโ€ฆ

Shubman Gill has been picked as ICC Player of the Month of July 2025. (Photo: ANI) Team India skipper Shubman Gill is enjoying a golden run at the moment โ€“ first as a batter and then as a captain. Gill ended up as the leading run-getter in the five-match Test series against England โ€“ his maiden one as Test captain โ€“ scoring 754 runs in them. He became the Indian captain with the most runs in a Test series, surpassing the great Sunil Gavaskar and just missed out on the record of legendary Sir Donald Bradman. Gill then led India to a remarkable six-run win over England in the fifth and final Test at the Oval in London earlier to this month to level the series at 2-2 and share the 'Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy' with England captain Ben Stokes. Gill's remarkable last month with Team meant that the Indian captain and England batter Sophia Dunkley have been declared the ICC men's and women's Players of the Month for July 2025 following an elaborate process that included votes from an esteemed selection panel as well as those of fans worldwide. Setting new standards with the bat ๐Ÿ‘Œ Capping off an incredible summer in whites is the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2025 ๐ŸŒŸ โ€” ICC (@ICC) August 12, 2025 Shubman Gill creates a new ICC record Gill became the first male player to win the 'Player of the Month' award four times after a stupendous run in England saw him score 567 runs at an average of 94.50 in the three Tests played in July. His previous ICC Player of the Month awards were in January 2023, September 2023 and February 2025. Two women players โ€“ Ash Gardner and Hayley Matthews โ€“ have won the award four times each. The highlight for Gill during this period was his aggregate of 430 runs in the second Test in Birmingham, the second highest ever in a Test match. His scores of 269 and 161 in that Test helped level the series 1-1 and he also chipped in with a useful 103 in the second innings of the fourth Test in Manchester that helped draw the match and keep the series alive. The Indian skipper, who won the award ahead of his England counterpart Ben Stokes and South Africa all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, said he was hoping to continue his good form in the season ahead. Gill ended up with 4 hundreds in the series and an average of 75.4 with a career-best score of 269 in the second Test at Edgbaston. 'It feels great to be named the ICC Player of the Month for July. This time it holds a lot more significance since it has come for my performances during my first Test series as captain,' Gill was quoted as saying by the ICC. 'The double ton in Birmingham is obviously something I will cherish forever and will be one of the highlights of my tour to England. The Test series against England was a learning experience for me as captain and we had some outstanding performances from both sides, which I am sure players from both sides will remember for a long time,' the Indian captain added. 'I would like to thank the jury for selecting me for this award and my teammates who have been with me during the course of this exciting series. I look forward to continuing my form in the season ahead and bring more laurels for the country.' Sophia Dunkley edges out Sophie Ecclestone England batter Dunkley edged her team-mate Sophie Ecclestone and Ireland captain Gaby Lewis for the award, showing a fine run during this period in ODIs as well as T20Is. She played in all seven matches at home against India across the two formats, aggregating 126 runs in three ODIs and 144 runs at a strike-rate of 134.57 in four T20Is. Dunkley was England's leading scorer in the T20I series and smashed a superb 92-ball 83 in the first ODI in Southampton. 'I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award off the back of a really hard-fought series against India,' Dunkley said. 'We would have loved to have won the series, but I think we'll take a lot from it moving towards the ICC Women's World Cup. India deserved their win, and it was a great series to be a part of.'
