Celtic vs. Bayern Munich picks and predictions
Prediction
Bayern Munich 3, Celtic 1
PASS.
Unfortunately, there's no great moneyline play here. Bayern Munich should have its best team taking the pitch to avoid a first-leg deficit as it will return home the following week. Munich throttled weaker sides in the league phase and had 2.4 or more expected goals in 5 of 8 matches.
Against stronger sides, Celtic, which is a major underdog despite being at home, struggled. It only faced a handful of quality sides in its 8 matches and had 3.1 fewer expected goals against Aston Villa, 2.1 fewer against Atalanta, and 0.5 fewer against Dortmund. It shouldn't be expected to keep pace with a juggernaut like Bayern here.
Avoid a moneyline play as Munich is just too expensive to take to win outright.
BET OVER 3.5 (-102).
While Celtic may defend at a high level in league play, Bayern should be a different beast. Offensively, Celtic is averaging 2.92 goals per game in league play and scored in 6 of 8 UEFA league phase matches. It had at least 1.0 expected goals in 5 of 8 matches as well. Celtic struggled against quality sides as well, allowing a combined 11 goals to Aston Villa and Dortmund.
Bayern Munich, which is led by star F Harry Kane, went Over this total in 4 of 8 league phase matches, scoring 3 or more goals in 3 of those 8 matches while allowing at least 1 goal in 6 of those 8 contests. It is averaging 3.10 goals per game in Bundesliga play. Considering the aggressive offenses taking the pitch, back OVER 3.5 (-102).

Gattuso named Italy coach as the Azzurri aim to avoid missing out on a third straight World Cup

Associated Press FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — Former hard-tackling midfielder Gennaro Gattuso was named Italy coach on Sunday, tasked with reviving the country's already-flagging World Cup qualifying hopes. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was fired last week after Italy lost its opening qualifier 3-0 at Norway to spark fears that the four-time champion will fail to qualify for a third straight World Cup. Gattuso lifted one of those World Cups as a player, in 2006. "Gattuso is a symbol of Italian soccer, the blue shirt is like a second skin for him," Italian soccer federation president Gabriele Gravina said. "His motivation, his professionalism and his experience will be fundamental to best face the national team's next matches. 'Aware of the importance of the objective we want to achieve, I thank him for the willingness and total dedication with which he accepted this challenge.' Claudio Ranieri was the Italian soccer federation's top choice to replace Spalletti but he turned down the offer. Gattuso's last coaching job was at Hajduk Split but he left the Croatian club by mutual consent at the start of the month after just one season in charge. The 47-year-old had previously coached AC Milan, Napoli, Valencia and Marseille, among others. As a player, Gattuso also won two league titles and two Champions League trophies with Milan, where he made 468 appearances and scored 11 goals. His only goal in 73 appearances for Italy was a fierce 25-meter strike against England in a 1-0 win in November 2000. Gattuso's only trophy as a coach was the Italian Cup with Napoli in 2010. Italy is already nine points behind Norway in its World Cup qualifying group, albeit having played two matches fewer than the group leader. The Azzurri followed up its dismal opening loss with a 2-0 win over minnow Moldova last Monday in what was Spalletti's final match in charge. He had revealed that he was being fired the previous day. Gattuso's first match as Italy coach will be at home to Estonia on Sept. 5. Israel is also in five-team Group I. Italy hosts Norway in the final round on Nov. 16. Only the group winner advances directly to the 2026 tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The runner-up enters playoff brackets to be played next March. That was the stage where Italy was eliminated by Sweden and North Macedonia and ruled out of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively. Gattuso will be presented at a news conference in Rome on Thursday. ___ AP soccer:

Bayer Leverkusen firmly block Atlético Madrid's pursuit of Piero Hincapié

Despite reports from Mundo Deportivo claiming that Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapié has agreed to join Atlético Madrid, it appears as if the Ecuadorian international will be remaining in the Bundesliga. Kicker reiterates that Leverkusen hold all the cards in this particular game of transfer poker. Hincapié's recently signed contract extension contains a €60m release clause. Germany's red company team, per Kicker, will absolutely not deviate from this line during a summer in which they've lost so many key players. Advertisement The Spanish reports claim that Hincapié and his entourage are very keen on a move to the La Liga outfit. Moreover, head coach Diego Simeone remains a huge fan of the 23-year-old. ESPN recently reported that a move could materialize. Kicker acknowledges that most of the rumors concerning Atlético's persistent inquires are true. Reliable German journalist Stephan van Nocks, Kicker's longtime Leverkusen correspondent, nevertheless avers that the price-tag proves an insurmountable hurdle. GGFN | Peter Weis
