St Thomas Day 2025: St Thomas Day is observed globally on July 3. The celebration honours Saint Thomas, who was believed to be one of the 12 Apostles of Jesus Christ. The missionary is regarded as the patron saint of India. St Thomas Day was originally celebrated on December 21 as it was traditionally considered the date of his death. However, in 1969, the Roman Catholic Church moved the observance to July 3.
St Thomas Day 2025: History
It is said that St Thomas had arrived in India in 52 AD. He is credited with propagating the gospel of Jesus as far as the Indian subcontinent. Even though the date of the special day commemorating his life and legacy was changed in the latter half of the 20th century, most Anglicans stuck with the original date of the observance. The Eastern Orthodox Church, on the other hand, observes the occasion on October 6.
St Thomas Day 2025: Significance
St Thomas was allegedly stabbed to death at the Parangimalai hillock in present-day Chennai in AD 72. The site is now known as Saint Thomas Mount. It is believed that St Thomas's initial skepticism about the resurrection of Jesus Christ was the reason why he was given the nickname 'Doubting Thomas".
He supposedly landed on the coastline of Kerala, at a location in present-day Thrissur district, when he reached India. Various religious texts reckon that Saint Thomas laid the foundation of Christianity in India and evangelised the populace of Malabar Coast.
St Thomas Day 2025: Traditions
Legend has it that St Thomas distributed among the poor the money that he was allotted when he was commissioned by an Indian king to construct a palace. In line with this particular tale, several customs associated with St Thomas Day seek to encourage charity. Special masses and prayer services are also hosted to mark the occasion. Regions with notable presence of Syrian Christians also witness special processions on St Thomas Day.
Yeshu Bhakti Divas Observance In India
Indian Christians celebrate Yeshu Bhakti Divas, also known as Indian Christian, on July 3. It is a relatively new observance. Aligned with St Thomas Day, Yeshu Bhakti Divas is meant as an annual occasion for Indian Christians to celebrate the 'person and message' of Jesus Christ.

Indian man shocked by US neighbours' cold response on house catching fire, video sparks debate: ‘That's called giving personal space'

Nitish Advitiy, an Indian vlogger, recently had a cultural shock after a house in his neighbourhood caught fire. However, none of the neighbours stepped out of their homes to check on the owner or to offer help. In the now-viral video shared on Instagram, Advitiy captured the scene where several firefighters assisted the house that caught fire. 'Look, there's a fire in this house. There's a major problem, and the firefighters are breaking open the terrace. Look, there are so many fire brigades and police vehicles. But I am shocked. There are so many houses in the neighbourhood, but no one came out of their houses to check about the incident. Even my owner just asked me how the incident unfolded, and went back inside,' Advitiy says in the video. 'No one came outside to check. It's just me. No one cares if people are dying in the neighbourhood. I think this is the only case in India where people step out to check on their neighbours,' he adds. The viral video shows that firefighters had broken open the window, and some climbed the terrace, attempting to open it. No onlookers can be spotted in the video. 'I know people will abuse me but I am telling the truth. If neighbours don't help each other then what is the point of a neighbourhood?' Advitiy captioned the video. Watch here: A post shared by नितिश अद्वितय (@nitishadvitiy) The video quickly gained traction, sparking a debate over civic sense and personal space. 'They know the authorities will take care of the same, no need of people to come and make reels of same,' a user wrote. 'That's called giving personal space reason why police in India don't arrive but people do learn some civic sense don't make everything emotional of course if it's a big fire one will come out and see,' another user commented. 'Firefighters along with ambulance comes within minutes in USA And very skilled ones. In India firefighters will come after 1 to 2 hours. Neighbours will come to see,' a third user reacted.

UK's Stranded F-35B Jet To Be Dismantled, British Navy To Send Bigger Aircraft To Airlift: Sources

The UK's F-35B fighter jet stranded at Thiruvananthapuram International Airport cannot be repaired on-site, and the British Navy will deploy a larger aircraft to transport the jet. The UK's F-35B aircraft, which remains stranded at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, cannot be repaired at the location, top government sources told CNN-News18, adding that the aircraft would be dismantled. Sources also said the British Navy will now bring a bigger aircraft to shift the jet, and that they would pay all dues to India, including the parking and hangar charges. The F-35B aircraft has been awaiting repairs after it experienced an engineering issue and made an emergency landing in Kerala on the night of June 14. Last week, news agency ANI quoted an official as saying that the 'UK F-35B aircraft is awaiting repairs at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport after developing an engineering issue. The UK has accepted an offer to move the aircraft to the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facility at the airport." 'The aircraft will be moved to the hangar once UK engineering teams arrive with specialist equipment, thereby ensuring there is minimal disruption to scheduled maintenance of other aircraft," he said. In a statement, the British High Commission had said ground teams were closely working with the Indian authorities to ensure safety and security precautions are observed while the jet's necessary repairs and safety checks were being planned. The British authorities had also expressed gratitude to India following the emergency landing of the jet. The UK aircraft was unable to return to the UK Aircraft Carrier HMS Prince of Wales due to adverse weather conditions. Prioritising safety, the aircraft diverted to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport in India, where it landed safely. While on the ground, the aircraft developed an engineering issue that precluded its return to the Carrier. Engineers from HMS Prince of Wales assessed the situation and determined that assistance from a UK-based engineering team was required.
