Prince Harry sparks outrage after lavish trip details go public: 'Hypocrisy'
Critics are lashing out at Prince Harry for his "hypocrisy" in traveling across the world, emitting tons of carbon in the process, all to promote sustainable travel.
In late May, Harry made a surprise trip to Shanghai to speak at the Envision 2025 Global Partner Conference. The Royal Observer reported that he urged the travel industry to embrace eco-friendly travel and to reach previously set goals of halving carbon pollution by 2030.
"Now is the moment for the industry to reaffirm its commitment to being a force for good," he said. "The true measure of our commitment is how we respond when the path becomes difficult."
Harry spoke in his role as founder of Travalyst, a company that promotes sustainable travel by, among other things, helping to develop a tool that shows the carbon pollution of flights when people book travel online.
Some have speculated that Harry took a private jet from Los Angeles to Shanghai for the conference, although many news sources couldn't confirm that. But The Times reported that, even if he flew first class on a commercial flight, Harry likely created the equivalent of 7 tons of carbon pollution.
If he took a private jet — one of the most environmentally damaging methods of travel — the pollution likely was 10 to 100 times higher.
But no matter what plane he took, many critics were aghast that he would cause so much pollution and travel more than 12,000 miles round-trip for a brief appearance to promote sustainability.
"The irony of flying across the world to promote sustainable, environmentally friendly travel is hard to ignore," said royal correspondent Jennie Bond, per Sky News Australia. "Surely a video speech would have been more ethical?"
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, have been outspoken climate activists and have pledged that their Archewell Foundation will reach net zero by 2030. Markle has also become known for her sustainable fashion choices.
However, this isn't the first time Harry has come under fire for his travel habits. When Travalyst launched in 2019, he defended his use of private jets, saying, per Time: "I spend 99% of my life traveling the world by commercial; occasionally there needs to be an opportunity based on a unique circumstance to ensure that my family are safe."

Liverpool Reportedly Submit New £113M Bid for Bayer's Florian Wirtz
Liverpool continue to work towards completing what is likely to go down as the biggest blockbuster transfer deal of the 2025 summer window, a deal almost certain to set a new record for a purchase by an English club. Any deal of that size, though, takes time. As such we find ourselves nearing the end of a second week of knowing Liverpool are pushing to sign Bayer Leverkusen and Germany 22-year-old attacker Florian Wirtz, waiting on news. Advertisement Significant news may have arrived, with The Times' Paul Joyce reporting that a new and improved bid—believed to be the third formally submitted—totalling £113M (€134M) with add-ons has been lodged today by the Reds. The offer would see a very significant £100M (€119M) paid as the guaranteed portion, with Wirtz having already agreed in principle to a five-year deal that will be signed when the two clubs reach a full agreement regarding the fee. While nothing is certain in transfers until everything is signed, the club allowing information of a third bid to be shared via one of the most reliable club-connected sources does suggest that full agreement may be close. Despite all that, it's worth noting the numbers remain short of the £126M (€150M) valuation Leverkusen have been widely reported as having placed on the player and it's not clear how willing they are to bargain on that point. Advertisement Until news of Liverpool's serious interest in Wirtz first broke two weeks ago, the assumption going back two years had been the player would end up at Bayern Munich—or if not there, perhaps Manchester City or Real Madrid. Assuming Liverpool get the deal across the line as everyone expects, Wirtz' signing will go down not just as a likely British record and Liverpool's club record but as an unexpected transfer coup and major statement of intent. Meghan Markle and Prince Harry hit with another staff shakeup as four team members exit within weeks
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have reportedly said goodbye to four more staff members. Newcomers Kyle Boulia, who served as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's LA-based deputy press secretary, and their UK press officer Charlie Gipson, have left the pair's private team after less than a year of employment, reported Hello! on Friday, June 13. Sources also told the outlet that at least two others have departed Markle and Harry's team in the past weeks. 7 It's been a challenge for the Duke and Duchess to keep their employees. WireImage The latest shakeup comes after the couple faced hypocrisy earlier this year for hiring new 'royal' court of staffers to revamp their broken public image, including Meredith Kendall Maines, previously with Google, Hulu and 'American Idol,' as their first chief communications officer to lead the team. They also recently added Emily Robinson, who oversaw publicity for Netflix's 'The Crown,' on the roaster to serve as the new director of communications. Maines brushed off the team shakeup as a 'strategic decision.' 'As the Duke and Duchess's business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support, as previously reported in Forbes and PR Week several weeks ago,' she shared in a statement. 'Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access, and critically, faster response times to inquiries,' Maines added. 7 The pair have reportedly lost another four staffers within weeks. Getty Images 7 This comes after the royal renegades said goodbye to their global press secretary and head of communications and chief of staff last year. Archewell Foundation via Getty Images Markle and Harry's team appears to be dropping like flies, with the royal renegades also losing two pivotal employees in 2024. Their global press secretary and head of communications, Ashley Hansen, announced her departure in October 2024 to start her own communications business. Their chief of staff, Josh Kettler, also left his role in 2024 after a trial period of three short months. However, The Post was told that Kettler was hired 'on a trial basis' and his abrupt departure was 'mutual' after all parties believed he was not suitable for the role. 7 Earlier this year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle hired Meredith Kendall Maines to revamp their broken public image. Getty Images for the Invictus Games Foundation 7 'Meghan and Harry have hired some of the most incredible people at the top of their fields, yet somehow none of them ever work out,' a source claimed. Instagram / @meghan 'Something tells me there will be another change in the future,' the insider told Hello!, noting that 'Meghan and Harry have hired some of the most incredible people at the top of their fields, yet somehow none of them ever work out.' The Post reached out to Maines for comment. The latest staff news comes after endless criticism of the pair, including Prince Harry's bombshell interview about his estranged family after losing his appeal for taxpayer-funded UK security to protect him, Markle and their children: Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4. 7 All eyes have been on the royals after Harry claimed he would 'love a reconciliation' with his family in a shocking interview with the BBC. Getty Images During the BBC interview, Harry claimed he would 'love a reconciliation' with his British loved ones, but his father, King Charles III, who is currently battling cancer, 'won't speak' to him. 'There have been so many disagreements between myself and some of my family,' he told the outlet in May. 'I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point continuing to fight anymore, life is precious,' he shared. 7 Meanwhile, Meghan has continued to face backlash for her brand, As Ever, and her 'cringe' labor dance video. Getty Images for the Invictus Games Foundation Markle has faced relentless backlash for her lifestyle brand, As Ever, which she first named 'American Riviera Orchard.' The former 'Suits' actress was forced to change the name due to trademark issues. She's now reportedly expanding the brand — currently featuring jams, teas, shortbread cookie mix, flower sprinkles, and more — into the hotel and restaurant spaces. Markle further faced backlash for her delivery room dance video, taken in 2021 ahead of Lilibet's birth, sharing the footage, which many labeled as 'cringe,' in honor of her youngest child's fourth birthday earlier this month. However, Prince Harry's wife is allegedly not sweating the labor dance criticism, with a source telling Daily Mail, 'Meghan is very pleased with the video. In the UK everyone's reaction has been a bit prudish but everywhere else, particularly in America and especially with young people, it has been a huge hit.'
