Netizens outraged over destruction of 'monument' to tycoon's life and legacy
The colonial-era residence once belonged to Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew, the self-made tycoon who brought the Honda Cub motorcycle to Malaysia. The villa had stood as a monument to his life and legacy.
One user, Myocho Kan, said he wished he had the means to buy and preserve the property.
"Why not keep something that represents the value and meaning of life?" he asked.
Sam Lim questioned how such a modest detached house could be replaced by a towering condominium.
"How can it be quantified?" Lim asked.
For Ruth Lee, the demolition felt like another piece of Penang's history being erased.
"I hope they at least maintain a plaque and display old photographs in the lobby of the new building," Lee added.
Reizo Zen remarked that luxury condominiums had become far too common along Penang's coastline.
"They ruin and obstruct the beautiful natural view," Zen said.
Maswanbi Mastan commented, "Another historical landmark gone."
Afrah Albasrawy added: "Another piece of Penang's heritage destroyed."
The demolition, which took place last month, also sparked criticism from heritage advocates and Penangites, who see the loss as yet another blow to the island's cultural identity.
Penang Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said the villa was privately owned and located outside the George Town World Heritage Site.

MB: Negeri Sembilan gets RM10.14m for 18 heritage and tourism projects under Tourism Ministry plan
SEREMBAN, Aug 13 — The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) has allocated RM10.14 million to Negeri Sembilan this year under the Restoration, Conservation, Renovation and Upgrading Programme (PPUN), as part of efforts to preserve heritage and strengthen the state's tourism sector. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the allocation reflects the federal government's holistic and strategic commitment to ensuring the state's heritage, tourism and cultural identity are preserved, elevated and developed. Aminuddin said 18 tourism and conservation projects have been approved under PPUN in districts including Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jelebu and Tampin. 'All these projects will breathe new life into the state's tourism destinations and reinforce the Visit Negeri Sembilan Year 2026 campaign,' he told reporters here today. According to him, one of the key projects is the RM1.2 million conservation and relocation of Masjid Lama Parit Istana to the Masjid Tanjung Beringin area, aimed at preserving Islamic history and traditional Malay architecture. He said RM800,000 has been allocated to upgrade Masjid Tanjung Beringin, transforming the mosque into a more inclusive and conducive heritage and worship centre, as well as improving the lighting and landscape of the Port Dickson Clock Tower. '(Other projects include) the maintenance of landmarks at the Sunggala Roundabout, the Lukut-Sepang junction and the Port Dickson gateway (as well as) development of ecotourism at the Gunung Datuk Eco Forest Park, Kenaboi State Park and Ulu Bendul Eco Forest Park. 'RM500,000 has been allocated to upgrade the Pulau Burung jetty and the watchtower (phase two), which will create new opportunities for the maritime tourism sector and biodiversity conservation,' he said. Aminuddin said that based on Tourism Malaysia's accommodation survey, the state recorded a significant rise in international tourist arrivals last year, with 0.46 million visitors compared to 0.34 million in 2023, an increase of 35.1 per cent. He added that the increase placed Negeri Sembilan sixth among 13 states and three Federal Territories, making it one of Malaysia's emerging tourism destinations. — Bernama

Melaka prepares to host World Tourism Day 2025 in September
ALOR GAJAH: Melaka is nearly 90% prepared to host World Tourism Day (WTD) 2025 from September 27 to 29. State Tourism, Heritage, Arts and Culture Committee chairman Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Rahman confirmed that programme content, venue selection, and international delegate invitations are almost finalised. 'We are in the final stages, with only 10 to 15% of work remaining. Invitations have been sent to tourism ministers worldwide, and we expect strong attendance,' he said after officiating the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR) programme in Rembia. The main events will take place at a Melaka Raya hotel for the World Tourism Conference and at Kota Syahbandar's multi-purpose performance centre for the WTD 2025 Gala Dinner and Visit Malaysia Year 2026 launch. Abdul Razak highlighted the venue's suitability, stating, 'It will showcase Melaka's cultural diversity and strategic Straits of Melaka location to global delegates.' The centre will also feature performances from all 14 Malaysian states, open to both guests and the public. Separately, he praised the WRUR programme for effectively addressing local issues in seven constituencies, including Rembia. Penang launches RM296m GBS By The Sea in Technoplex Bayan Lepas
GEORGE TOWN: Penang continued to cement its status as a global business and technology hub with the official launch of 'GBS By The Sea', a landmark RM296 million development located in Technoplex Bayan Lepas. Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow hailed the project as a bold statement and a clear example of Penang's transition into a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economy. He said GBS By The Sea is the fourth project under the global business services (GBS) initiative, spanning 290,000 square feet (sq ft) of space. 'The GBS By The Sea facility is already fully occupied, with three global industry leaders, namely Advanced Micro Devices Global Services (AMD), Celestica Platform and Cloud Solutions Malaysia and the Microsoft Knowledge Capital Centre. 'These global companies are not only investing in Penang, but they are also creating over 1,000 quality jobs for our local talent in areas like research and development (R&D), engineering, digital services and more. These are the kind of high-value, future-ready jobs that we want for Penangites,' he said during the GBS By The Sea launching ceremony in Bayan Lepas today.
