During the last week of April, while waiting for his passengers, who were sightseeing in Karwar, a woman in her mid-20s approached him. After a brief conversation, she learnt he was from Bengaluru and expressed interest in hiring him for an upcoming tour of Bengaluru and Mysuru. They exchanged numbers before he returned to his regular duties. In the days that followed, the woman maintained contact through occasional WhatsApp calls. Then, around 9.30pm of May 6, she phoned Ananth to tell him she would be arriving in Bengaluru the next morning, requesting his services as previously discussed. When Ananth explained he was in Hubballi for work, she agreed to meet him after his return. The next day, at precisely 11am, she called to confirm her arrival in Bengaluru. "She asked Ananth to book accommodation near Majestic. He said he was unfamiliar with hotels in that area, and suggested a place near Tumakuru Road," Shankar Nayak, Ananth's brother-in-law and owner of the vehicle, said. She provided her Aadhaar card for the booking, and Ananth secured a room at PV Residency in Sidedahalli. After collecting her near Eight Mile on Tumakuru Road, he drove her to the hotel. While he waited in the car park, she said she needed to visit a nearby beauty parlour and suggested he could freshen up while waiting. The moment he entered the bathroom, she latched the door from outside. With Ananth trapped inside, she took his mobile phone from the table along with his car keys. She then met her male associate, who had been waiting nearby, and together, they drove away in Ananth's Hyundai Accent.Ananth's cries for help eventually alerted hotel staff, who freed him from the locked room. Investigation revealed the pair drove towards Tumakuru, then to Hiriyur, Chitradurga, after which the cops lost their trail. The hotel's security cameras had no recorded backup. "We suspect there may be more to the complainant's story about why he booked the room. However, we won't jump to conclusions until we apprehend the suspects and uncover more details," another investigating officer said.

Digital arrest: Retired RBI employee duped of Rs 49 lakh in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: An 80-year-old retired Reserve Bank of India (RBI) employee lost Rs 49 lakh in a digital arrest fraud after fraudsters posed as officers of the Mumbai crime police. According to his complaint, on August 6, he received a call where the caller claimed that an Anti-Money Laundering (AML) case had been filed against him in the Mumbai High Court and that an arrest warrant had been issued. He was then connected to individuals identifying themselves as Inspector Sandeep Rao from the Mumbai Cyber Crime Department and Inspector Officer Vijay Khanna, IPS. The accused asked him to share his Aadhaar card, after which they alleged his ID was linked to an international money laundering case. They cited the example of Naresh Goel, arrested in 2023 with 247 cases of money laundering, and claimed that his Aadhaar details were found in similar suspicious transactions. The victim received two documents via WhatsApp — an acknowledgement letter from the Financial Department, Mumbai Crime Branch and CBI, and an arrest order on Directorate of Enforcement letterhead carrying his details. The accused told him his bank accounts needed to be verified and could be frozen. Under pressure, he was coerced into transferring money to what was claimed to be an RBI AML Department account for verification. Following their instructions through internet banking, he ended up transferring a total of Rs 49 lakh. Based on his complaint, a case has been registered.

3 Assamese men assaulted for entering Nagaland ‘without permit'

Amid tensions on Assam-Nagaland border following large-scale eviction drives in Assam's Golaghat district, three men from Assam who had entered Nagaland for a picnic on August 15 were assaulted by three Nagaland locals who sought to check their permits and identities. According to a police officer from Golaghat, nine men from Merapani – which is part of the Disturbed Area Belt, land disputed between Assam and Nagaland – had gone for a picnic on Friday to a spot located around 1.5 km within the adjacent Wokha district in Nagaland. 'Since the area is only about 2-3 km from each of their homes, they must not have thought much about it. But when they were packing up to leave around 5.30 pm, three Naga locals who were carrying airguns confronted them. They asked to see Inner Line Permits and Aadhaar cards of the group. On not finding the papers with them, they (Naga locals) hit two of the group members with the butt of their airguns and fired in the air. A pellet from the airgun hit one of the (Assamese) men, Prakash Basumatary,' said the police officer. He said the matter was informed to the Nagaland police, after which the three accused were apprehended by Wokha police around 11 pm. 'After the evictions, people in Nagaland have been particular about checking identification and permits of people entering from Assam,' said the officer. In the past month, the Assam government conducted a massive eviction drive in the Rengma Reserve Forest in Uriamghat in Golaghat district, a region which borders Nagaland. Over 2500 families, mostly Bengali-origin Muslims, living in the area were affected. Ahead of this eviction drive, the Nagaland government directed 'heightened vigilance' along the state border with Assam amid 'apprehensions' that the displaced people may try to enter Nagaland. Following this, police, district administrations and civil society organisations swung into action to conduct checks on movement near entry points from Assam.
