‘Mercenaries' from China, Pakistan, Africa are fighting for Russia, Zelensky says

Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Ukrainian troops in northeastern Ukraine were fighting foreign 'mercenaries' from various countries including China, Pakistan and parts of Africa, and vowed a response.

Zelensky has previously accused Moscow of recruiting Chinese fighters for its war effort against Ukraine, charges Beijing denied, while
North Korea has also provided thousands of its own troops in
Russia's Kursk region.
'We spoke with commanders about the frontline situation, the defence of Vovchansk, and the dynamics of the battles,'
Zelensky wrote on social media after visiting a frontline area in the northeastern Kharkiv region.
'Our warriors in this sector are reporting the participation of mercenaries from
China , Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African countries in the war. We will respond.'
Reuters contacted the embassies of Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan in Kyiv to request comment.

Russia did not immediately comment publicly on Zelensky's comments.

Trump's envoy Witkoff arrives in Moscow in US gamble to end Ukraine war

The White House was racing to beat another self-imposed deadline to resolve Russia's war in Ukraine, with US President Donald Trump leaning hard on his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, to get Moscow to halt the fighting. Advertisement Witkoff arrived in the Russian capital for talks with officials on Wednesday, just two days before an August 8 deadline Trump set for Russia to reach a truce or face potential sanctions. While Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he would not abandon his campaign in Ukraine, people familiar with the situation said the Kremlin might offer the US concessions that could include halting air strikes in a bid to avert new economic penalties. Witkoff's visit follows an apparent shift in Trump's approach to the war, which initially saw him focus his pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky only to increasingly express frustration with Putin in recent weeks. Russia fired a record number of long-range drones at Ukraine in July. Photo: Reuters The barrage of Russian drones that have rained down on Ukrainian cities and the resulting images of destruction have made an impression on the US president, according to people close to him.
