HYDRAA marshals boycott work protesting pay cut
Marshals of the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) have entered the strike mode protesting a cut in their salaries. The marshals, who are ex-servicemen recruited by the enforcement agency, reportedly received ₹7000 less this month compared to the pay agreed upon. In response, about 100 of them boycotted work and gathered at the Sanjeevaiah Park in Hyderabad on Monday (August 11, 2025) to protest the pay cut. The marshals, reportedly recruited for Enforcement, Vigilance and Disaster Management (EVDM) before HYDRAA was constituted, played a supervisory role, training the staff in rescue operations. HYDRAA chief was not available for a comment.

A.P. Governor to launch Red Cross's campaign against against single-use plastics in Guntur on August 12
The Indian Red Cross Society, Andhra Pradesh, has launched an ambitious civic initiative to make the state India's first plastic-conscious region, starting with Guntur. Titled the 'War on Single-Use Plastic,' the multi-year campaign will mobilise over 50,000 students from 540 schools as 'Green Warriors' under the Junior Red Cross banner. Speaking to The Hindu, P. Ramachandra Raju, Treasurer of the Andhra Pradesh State Branch and convenor of the campaign, said Governor S. Abdul Nazeer will formally launch the initiative on Tuesday, with 70 schools receiving the first batch of cloth bags on a pilot basis.. Mr. Raju further explained that the initiative is designed to 'combine youth leadership, local partnerships, and a clear operational model to achieve measurable environmental outcomes.' He added that students will be trained to adopt and promote reusable alternatives, instill sustainable habits, and influence behavioural change in their households, schools, and communities. The programme follows a six-step execution model, covering student enrolment, education modules, habit tracking, waste collection, recognition, and review, implemented with support from school coordinators and trained volunteers. Strategic partners include Magsmen Brand Consultants, SayWhat NGO, Atoms Digital Solutions, and Women's College, Guntur, each contributing expertise in messaging, inclusive engagement, digital infrastructure, and on-ground support. The ₹75 lakh annual campaign is entirely funded through CSR contributions and voluntary donations. Mr. Raju expressed confidence that the model could be replicated across districts to build a sustained, State-wide movement against single-use plastics.

Assamese girl becomes first from state to earn Oxford degree in Sanskrit, Classical Hindi
An Assamese girl, Arani S Hazarika, 21, has become the first Assamese to graduate in Sanskrit and Classical Hindi from Oxford University. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree on August 9 at the Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford's ceremonial studied at Balliol College under the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern programme combined Sanskrit with Classical Hindi, covering linguistic structure, literature, and historical texts. University records, according to her family, indicate that she is also the first Assamese student to earn a BA in Sanskrit from Oxford. Her father, Partha Pratim Hazarika, a senior journalist based in Guwahati, confirmed the milestone. 'As per available records, this is the first time an Assamese has graduated in Sanskrit from Oxford,' he CLASS 12 TO OXFORD SCHOLARSHIP AND SPECIALISATION IN SANSKRITArani's path to Oxford began soon after her Class 12 board examinations. The university offered her a place in its BA Sanskrit programme and awarded her the Simon and June Li Undergraduate Scholarship, which supports high-achieving students from underrepresented backgrounds. She joined the course in October her degree, Hazarika focused her dissertation on the standardisation of a 15th-century Sanchi manuscript of the Dakshinpat Satra in Majuli, a key Vaishnavite monastery in work involved detailed study of the manuscript's linguistic features, orthography, and preservation academic performance has earned her an offer to continue at Oxford for a Master's degree in the same field.
