Complaints lodged with Collector over alleged disappearance of earthmover
The Sarovaram Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi and the Vazhathuruthy Residents' Association have lodged separate complaints with the District Collector, alleging irresponsibility on the part of Revenue officials over the disappearance of an earthmover that was under the custody of the Revenue department and its subsequent recovery.
The earthmover in question had been confiscated in November 2024 in connection with the alleged destruction of mangroves in the Kottooli wetlands and an attempt to construct a road. For over a month, it could not be moved from the site as one of its tyres had got stuck in the mud. It was later shifted to a nearby plot, where it was to be detained until further notice. However, the earthmover reportedly disappeared on the night of May 16. It was found behind an auditorium near Sarovaram Bio Park three days later.
Officials from the Vengeri village office inspected the earthmover and instructed its owners to present it at the office by Wednesday (May 21, 2025).
Meanwhile, the Sarovaram Prakrithi Samrakshana Samithi alleged that Revenue officials showed no concern for the property they had confiscated. 'They [the officials] shifted the blame, claiming it was the responsibility of the police to look after the earthmover. However, the Nadakkavu police said they had not received any such intimation from the Revenue department,' said P.M. Jeejabai, secretary of the Vazhathuruthy Residents' Association.
The Samithi questioned the need to repair a vehicle that was not meant to be used any time soon, as it had been legally confiscated.
Tension has been brewing at Vazhathuruthy over the past few months between residents and alleged encroachers of the wetland over attempts to clear mangroves and fill parts of the Kottooli wetlands, a proposed Ramsar site. So far, three earthmovers have been confiscated by the Revenue department for activities that violated the Kerala Paddy and Wetland Protection Act.

Fire breaks out at revenue building in ITO Office, quickly brought under control

In a separate incident, on May 31, a massive fire was reported at the Sunday Bazar in Budh Vihar Phase 2 of New Delhi, according to officials, and two to four fire tenders rushed to the incident spot. The fire was in 10 to 12 huts, which the fire officials completely doused. The reason behind the accident is yet to be revealed. No casualties have been reported. Earlier, two people lost their lives and four others were injured in a fire at an E-Rikshaw charging station at Moti Ram Road, in the national capital's Shahdara area. (ANI)

7,082 kg ganja seized in 62 cases
Paderu (ASR District): A high-level NCORD (Narcotics Coordination) meeting was held at the Collector's Conference Hall in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Thursday. Visakhapatnam Range DIG Gopinath Jetty, district collector AS Dinesh Kumar, District SP Amit Bardar, Additional SP (Admin) Dheeraj Kunibilli and officers from various departments attended. Revenue, Forest, Health, ICDS, Education, Agriculture, Horticulture, and Women & Child Welfare departments participated. During the review, the District SP presented the district's anti-drug enforcement statistics. He said that in 2024, a total of 316 NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) cases were registered, leading to the seizure of 23,366.25 kg of dry ganja and 91.2 kg of hashish oil. A total of 970 individuals were arrested. In 2025 so far, 62 cases have been registered, resulting in the seizure of 7,082.74 kg of dry ganja and 5.5 kg of hashish oil. A total of 129 individuals were arrested in connection with these cases. The police have also destroyed 93.01 acres of illicit ganja plantations identified using drones. The district has submitted 17 PIT-NDPS (Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances) proposals to higher authorities. Action has been initiated under the PD (Preventive Detention) Act against 50 habitual offenders, all of whom have been incarcerated. As part of the awareness and prevention strategy, the district has conducted 907 outreach programmes in schools and colleges during this year. The district administration urged the public to share any information about illegal ganja activities. Informants can contact the District NDPS Cell at 9381123100 or the EAGLE helpline at 1930. Mini-marathon in Andhra's Guntur to raise awareness on drug abuse
GUNTUR: Guntur District In-charge Collector A Bhargav Tej and Superintendent of Police (SP) Satish Kumar flagged off a mini marathon on Sunday to raise awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse. The event, held as part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (Drug-Free India Campaign), saw participants run through Narasampalem and Mudu Bommalu Centre, finishing at Hindu College Circle. The Collector said the Central and State Governments are conducting a series of awareness programmes from June 1 to 26, ahead of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26. 'Through rallies, marathons, seminars, and competitions, we aim to educate the public, especially the youth, about the risks associated with drug abuse,' he said. He added that departments including Police, Revenue, Excise, Health, and Education are working together to tackle the issue, and de-addiction centres provide treatment to affected individuals. The SP noted that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment in 2020, targets drug abuse at the grassroots level. The police, along with the Eagle Task Force, are involved in enforcement and awareness activities. Students and employees were also present.
