Buonfiglio the New Italian Olympic Committee Boss Ahead of Milan-Cortina Games
The 74-year-old Buonfiglio, who has been president of the Italian Canoe and Kayak Federation since 2005, was the candidate supported by outgoing CONI president Giovanni Malagò. Malagò, who is leaving the presidency after 12 years and three terms, remains president of the Milan-Cortina organizing committee. Buonfiglio was elected in the first round after receiving 47 of the 81 votes. Luca Pancalli, who led Italy's Paralympic Committee for a quarter century, received the remaining 34 votes. Franco Carraro, the 85-year-old former International Olympic Committee member who ran as a peacemaker, didn't get any votes. During his pre-vote speech, Carraro said he was very concerned that Buonfiglio and Pancalli led groups of voters who were strongly opposed to each other, but told his supporters that they were free to vote for either of those two candidates.
Buonfiglio was also a CONI vice president from 2013–18.

Italy is set to play Israel on neutral turf in Debrecen, Hungary on Sept. 8, before hosting the return match in Udine on Oct. 14. 'We could just focus on playing, looking the other way. But we believe that is not right,' AIAC vice president Giancarlo Camolese said. The Azzurri also played Israel in Udine last October in a Nations League match that saw protests before and during the game and intense security measures, including snipers on the roof of the stadium. Since then the situation has continued to deteriorate with the Palestinian death toll from the 22-month war passing 62,000 earlier this month. 'The world is in flames. Many people like the Palestinians are suffering,' AIAC vice president Francesco Perondi said. 'Indifference is unacceptable.'

Atalanta Signs Poland Wing-Back Nicola Zalewski After Short Stay at Inter Milan
Atalanta has signed Nicola Zalewski with the Poland wing-back leaving Inter Milan after just seven months and 17 games, including a Champions League final. Atalanta did not disclose a transfer fee in the deal announced late Monday for the 23-year-old Zalewski. It was reported to be 17 million euros ($20 million). That would be about 10 million euros ($11.7 million) profit for Inter which signed Zalewski on loan from Roma in February. The move was made permanent with a 6.3 million euro ($7.4 million) deal in June, while the club was in the United States at the Club World Cup. Inter lost in the round of 16 against Fluminense. Zalewski will stay in the Champions League this season after Atalanta qualified by placing third in Serie A. In the final last season, he came on as a second-half substitute in Inter's 5-0 loss against Paris Saint-Germain. The Italy-born Zalewski has played 29 times for Poland including two games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and two at the 2024 European Championship in Germany Atalanta said Zalewski is its fifth offseason signing for the club, which is majority-owned by United States investor Stephen Pagluica. The team is now coached by Ivan Jurić after the inspirational Gian Piero Gasperini left to join Roma after nine years in Bergamo that brought the 2024 Europa League title.

UEFA pays tribute to slain Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid
DUBAI: UEFA unfurled a banner with the message 'Stop Killing Children. Stop Killing Civilians' on the pitch on Wednesday ahead of the UEFA Super Cup showdown between Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham Hotspur in Udine, Italy. The message came as a tribute following the death of Palestinian footballer Suleiman Al-Obeid, known as the 'Palestinian Pele,' who was killed by Israeli gunfire while awaiting aid in Gaza earlier this month. Nine child refugees from Palestine, Afghanistan, Ukraine, and Iraq carried the banner onto the pitch before the game. The international football community failed to publicly condemn Al-Obeid's killing at first, but UEFA later posted a tribute without mentioning or explaining the circumstances surrounding his death. In a brief post on X, UEFA said the former national team member was 'a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.'
