Holiday turns tragic as two siblings drown at Pulau Mentigi beach
MERSING: What was meant to be a joyful holiday back in their hometown ended in tragedy when two siblings drowned while swimming at the Pulau Mentigi beach here yesterday afternoon.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Mersing Zone director Maritime Commander Suhaizan Saadin said the deceased were Nur Awatif Udaima Mohd Hisam, 15, and her younger brother Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni, 13.
He said the Malaysia Rescue Sub Centre (MRSC) Johor alerted them at 4.25 pm to activate a search and rescue (SAR) operation, after which MMEA'S patrol boat PERKASA 44 was deployed to the scene.
'According to the information received, the first victim, Nur Awatif Udaima, was found at the location where she drowned by the local community at 4.30 pm.
'The PERKASA 44 boat and the islanders then expanded the search sector, and Ahmad Uwais Al Qarni was found through diving efforts by island residents at 6.30 pm,' he said in a statement tonight.
Suhaizan said it is understood that the victims' family had returned to their village at Pulau Tinggi for the school holidays, and the family had gone to the beach, about 19 nautical miles from the Mersing coastline, for an outing.
He added that the bodies were handed over to the Marine Police Force (PPM) and brought back to the Shahbandar Jetty.
Meanwhile, Mersing District Police Chief Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani said that the bodies of the siblings were sent to Mersing Hospital for post-mortem.

KOTA KINABALU (June 4): A local fishing boat was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) for violating its license by engaging in illegal trawling activities under the Fisheries Act. MMEA Sabah and Labuan Director, Maritime First Admiral Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali, said the vessel was detected during a routine patrol operation with assistance from the Sabah Maritime Surveillance System (SWASLA) station. The boat, manned by a skipper and five crew members — all Indonesians — was found operating about one nautical mile northwest of Tanjung Tembungo. Khairulanuar said the boat had breached license terms under Section 8(b) of the Fisheries Act 1985 by conducting fishing activities in prohibited waters. 'The entire crew, along with one tonne of mixed fish, was detained. The total value of the seizure, including the catch and the vessel, is estimated at RM45,000,' he said in a statement on Wednesday. He emphasized that using the side-towing method within a three-nautical-mile radius not only breaks the law but severely impacts the marine ecosystem. 'This method destroys natural habitats, disrupts fish breeding cycles, and significantly affects the livelihoods of traditional coastal fishermen,' he said. Khairulanuar added that the MMEA would continue to enhance patrols and surveillance in key areas through the SWASLA system and strategic maritime operations. MMEA detains Malaysian-registered vessel crewed illegally by foreigners
KLANG: A Malaysian vessel, illegally manned by Indonesians, landed in hot water after it was caught flouting maritime and Immigration regulations by the Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Selangor Maritime director Captain Abdul Muhaimin Muhammad Salleh said the vessel, which was operated by a skipper and two crew members, aged between 38 and 48 years old, was detained Tuesday (June 3) some 0.16 nautical miles south of Tanjung Harapan near here. He added that the boat was apprehended during the MMEA's enforcement patrols around Klang waters. 'An inspection found that the vessel had breached its licence condition under the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 with various offences,'' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin. He added that the offences included the skipper's name not being the one stipulated in the licence as well as failure to provide the 500GT Domestic Trade Voyages licence. 'Not only that, the cargo boat's crew members' names were not found in the licence and the vessel's Automatic Identification System (AIS) was also inactive and finally, one of the crew members did not have a seaman's book,'' Captain Abdul Muhaimin said. He added the cargo boat had also flouted the Immigration Act 1959/63 as one of the foreigners did not possess valid identification documents. The Malaysian vessel had also breached maritime regulations by hiring foreigners. The vessel and the trio were taken to the Marine Police jetty at Pulau Indah to be handed over to the Selangor MMEA investigating officer for further action. 'Maritime Malaysia will not compromise on any individuals who carelessly or purposely breach the country's laws in the Malaysian maritime zone,'' said Captain Abdul Muhaimin.
