Four Indians enter U-22 Asian Boxing C'ships finals

Bangkok: Neeraj, Ishan Kataria, Yatri Patel and Priya packed a punch on way to reaching the finals of the U-22 Asian Boxing Championships here on Wednesday. Neeraj relied on his speed and counter-attacking skills to defeat Kyeongho Bang of South Korea 5:0 in the men's 75kg category to book a place in the title showdown, while Ishan Kataria, in men's 90+kg, dominated Chen Chen of China with his big punches as the referee had to stop the contest in the third round. Yatri Patel in women's 57kg then reached the final by using a combination of left-right punches to dominate Vietnam's Thi Nhung Quand and win by a unanimous 5:0 verdict. Priya (women's 60kg) also came up with a dominating performance to overpower Uzbekistan's Odinakhon Ismoilova to reach the final. The U19 and U22 Asian Boxing Championships, which are being held simultaneously, gives India's rising stars a platform to showcase their skills against some of Asia's toughest opponents. India has fielded 40 boxers — 20 in each age group — in the competition. Among the other semi-finalists, Rockey Chaudhary's bout against Iran's Sam Estaki was stopped in the second round as he suffered cuts over both his eyebrows. Harsh (60kg) and Mayur (90kg) took the fight to their respective opponents but could not finish on the right side of the split verdict. Harsh went down 1:4 against Uzbekistan's Shohruh Abdumalikov while Mayur lost to Shakhzod Polvonov from the same country. Ankush went down 0:5 to Sanzhar-Ali Begaliyev of Kazakhstan. All the four boxers will bring home a bronze medal each. Bhawna Sharma went down 1:4 against Robiyakhon Bakhtiyorova of Uzbekistan in the women's 48kg category, while Parthavi Grewal (women's 60kg), Parnjal Yadav (women's 65kg) and Shruti (women's 75kg) also lost their semifinal bouts to settle for bronze medals.

Rohit Told Jaiswal To Stay With Mumbai: 'Don't Forget You Played For India Because...'

Last Updated: Yashasvi Jaiswal had obtained NOC from Mumbai to leave for Goa before making a U-turn. India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a surprise U-turn after an equally stunning decision to leave Mumbai for Goa earlier this year. Citing personal reasons, Jaiswal sought and eventually obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to leave the team where he started his professional career. A timely intervention from India ODI captain Rohit Sharma and discussions with other top stars resulted in Jaiswal revisiting his plan to shift to Goa. According to a report in Mumbai Mirror, Rohit convinced Jaiswal that it wasn't ideal to switch states at this point of his career while reminding the role played by Mumbai in helping him achieve India dream. 'Rohit asked Yashasvi to stay on in Mumbai at this stage of his career," the publication quoted MCA president Ajinkya Naik as saying. 'He (Rohit) explained to Yashasvi that there was a lot of pride and prestige in playing for a team like Mumbai, which has won the Ranji Trophy a record 42 times." 'Rohit also told Yashasvi that he must not forget that it was because of Mumbai cricket that he got a platform to show his talent and go on to play for India, and he must be grateful to the city for that. It was here in Mumbai that he started playing cricket on the maidans and then was picked for all the age group teams of Mumbai," he added. In a letter to MCA in April this year, the 23-year-old said he plans to relocate with his family to Goa and therefore requested the association to allow give NOC to leave Mumbai and switch to a new team. 'After discussing this with Rohit and a few other stalwarts who represented India and Mumbai, Jaiswal sent an email to us requesting us to withdraw his NOC for a shift to Goa. We approved his request," Naik said. Jaiswal moved from Uttar Pradesh to Mumbai at the age of 11 to pursue his cricket dreams. He gradually moved up the ranks before going on to represent India at the U-19 World Cup in 2020 where the team finished runners-up and he was picked as player-of-the-tournament. A year before, he had created a storm by hitting a double-century for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
