A new report into the role that sport clubs play in New Zealand communities has highlighted the struggles they are facing to deliver sport.
The 'Stronger Communities Through Sport' report comes off the back of seven years of research, drawing on findings from the National Sport Club Survey (NSCS), an initiative of the New Zealand Amateur Sport Association (NZASA) and Auckland University of Technology.
The report provides an insight into the shifting landscape of grassroots sport in New Zealand from 2018 to 2024 and NZASA Chair Gordon Noble-Campbell said some of the findings were sobering.
Volunteer numbers have dropped by 28 percent since 2018, which is placing more pressure on clubs and coaches.
"And this is a real concern for everybody who is involved at the grassroots in helping to make sport happen for people in their local community and interested in making sure that kids have access to sport," Noble-Campbell said.
Funding is a key issue, with 72 percent of clubs concerned about long-term financial sustainability, with many relying on just one or two core funders.
Noble-Campbell said revenue is reducing but costs continue to increase.
"Over the seven-year period there has been increasing concern around how community clubs make ends meet. Everybody knows it's financially tough times and for clubs providing sport, just having access to financial resources to help pay for even the more basic operational costs like insurance on buildings and facilities and then being able to collect member subscriptions to help pay for some of these costs is a huge challenge."
He said local authorities played an important role in helping facilitate community sport but they were passing more pressure onto clubs.
"The costs of utilising or accessing those facilities has continued to grow as councils have sought to bridge the gap with their own struggling finances by having people who have actually paid for the development of these facilities through their rates also then pay for their use and upkeep on an ongoing basis. The flow on effect of course is that clubs have to increase their membership fees, and that's another obstacle to many families participating in sport.
"These sport clubs are the beating heart of our communities providing important social benefits, not only to sport."
Noble-Campbell said it's the most comprehensive report of its kind and should inform future policy, funding, and support across the sector.
The report also addresses under-representation in club leadership, emerging sponsorship strategies, and the need for inclusive access across all demographics.
Only 36 percent of clubs report gender-balanced governance, highlighting ongoing equity challenges.
It underscores the sector's resilience with sport club membership rebounding by 12 percent since its pandemic low in 2021 and identifies areas of opportunity and innovation. For instance, 56 percent of clubs now have formal partnerships with schools, signalling closer alignment between education and community sport.
Climate resilience is emerging as a key theme, with nearly one in five clubs reporting disruption from extreme weather events in the past two years.

Georgia Ponsonby (R) of New Zealand celebrates her try. Photo: Andrew Cornaga/ Hooker Georgia Ponsonby has become the second Black Ferns forward to sign with English Premiership team Trailfinders Women from after this year's Rugby World Cup. She joins fellow Black Ferns squad member and fellow World Cup winner Alana Borland in signing with the London based club for the 2025/2026 Premiership season. "We are delighted to announce the signing of Black Fern, Georgia Ponsonby," Trailfinders women said in a statement. "A Rugby World Cup winner with New Zealand and a standout performer across both domestic and international competition, Ponsonby arrives in West London as one of the most complete forwards in the global game - a relentless ball carrier, defensive rock, and razor-sharp operator in the breakdown. "Her athleticism makes her a nightmare for opposition defences and a dream for the coaching staff. Named in World Rugby's Women's XV Dream Team in 2023, Ponsonby's impact speaks for itself - a player whose work rate and physicality set the tone, and whose presence lifts those around her. Ponsonby said she's looking forward to playing and living in the UK. "I'm stoked to be joining Trailfinders. It's an evolving team with exciting talent and a great culture. "Being based in London adds to the excitement, and I'm looking forward to enjoying everything the club and city has to offer." Football: Aussie goal-machine joins Auckand FC in A-League return

Auckland FC's Lachlan Brook Photo: Supplied Auckland FC have signed Australian winger Lachlan Brook for the upcoming A-League season with hopes he will find the back of the net regularly. Brook, who has played more than 100 professional games, arrives from Major League Soccer team Real Salt Lake. The 24-year-old has previously played in England in League 2 and the A-League with Adelaide United and Western Sydney Wanderers. "There is so much hype and noise for this team and what they have achieved - on and off the pitch," Brook said. "I have heard so much about the fans and the numbers that turn out to support us. I can't wait to get out there and show them what I am all about. To say I'm raring to go would be an understatement." Born in Gawler, South Australia, Brook came through the youth and NPL system at Adelaide United, making his senior debut in the 2017/18 season. Brook went on to make 29 appearances for the club and played a part in Adelaide's emphatic 4-0 victory in the 2019 FFA Cup (now Australia Cup) Final. He was later awarded Adelaide United Youth Player of the Year for his performances that season. In 2020, Brook signed a three-year deal with English Championship club Brentford before being loaned to Crew Alexandra. Then in League 2, he played 34 times for the Chesire club in 22/23 season. The following season saw a return to the A-League with Western Sydney Wanderers - scoring nine goals in 23 appearances. Auckland FC Head Coach Steve Corica says he is hoping for more of the same. "He's versatile, has an eye for goal and knows the league," Corica said. "He achieved some great things at Adelaide and Western Sydney Wanderers, and with more than 100 games here and abroad, he's a proven professional. It is no secret we needed to boost our attack this season, so we're looking forward to having him at Auckland." On the international stage, Brook has represented Australia at both U18 and U23 levels.
