‘Age is just a number': China grandma, 71, comes third in fitness contest, shares health tips

A Chinese grandmother has inspired countless netizens after winning third place in a fitness competition, following four years of rigorous training.
On June 1, 71-year-old Sun Minghui, who is originally from Ma'anshan in Anhui province, central China, won the bronze medal in the mixed-gender category at the 2025 Wuhan round of the National Fitness Newcomers Quality Competition.
Sun was the oldest competitor at the event.

Before retiring, she worked in the cafeteria of a steel factory and despite the demands of her job, always maintained a passion for exercise.
After retirement, she explored a variety of sports, including cycling, jumping rope, jogging, and hiking.
She only began formal fitness training at the age of 67 and has developed an impressive six-pack and firm overall muscle tone.
'After just over a month of training, I began to see changes. My biceps became visible, and the contours of my lats started to show. I did not lose muscle with age; I gained it. That gave me a huge confidence boost.
'This proves that no matter your age, you can do strength training or other exercises. Moving is always better than staying still,' Sun told Hubei Media Group.

Hong Kong environment chief rejects relaxed quarantine rules for imported pets

Hong Kong's environment chief has ruled out flexible quarantine arrangements, including at home, for imported cats and dogs, but will consider extending hours and increasing the number of checkpoints for pet transport from mainland China. Secretary for Environment and Ecology Tse Chin-wan told a Legislative Council meeting on Wednesday that existing quarantine facilities are sufficient for imported pets, adding that the government would not consider altering the quarantine method for now due to the risk of rabies. 'When pets are quarantined in private residences, they have opportunities to come into contact with other animals and people, which can pose significant risks,' Tse said. 'Thus, home quarantine is not appropriate from a risk management perspective.' He added that new quarantine rules had already reduced costs for pet owners from mainland China by three-quarters and increased the turnover rate of quarantine facilities fourfold. The department's Kowloon Animal Management Centre also expanded its quarantine facilities in May, increasing those for cats from 21 to 34 and for dogs from 20 to 30.

Game on for Hong Kong's economy as Kai Tak Stadium proves to be a roaring success

Hong Kong should capitalise on the success of the Asian Cup qualifier at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday night by maximising the potential of the venue and engagement with business sectors to boost the economy, according to analysts. A total of 42,570 football fans witnessed Hong Kong's 1-0 victory over India, packing the stands with a sea of red and roaring chants as the team hosted an international match for the first time at the new stadium. Vincent Cheng Wing-shun, vice-chairman of the major sports events committee, told a radio show on Wednesday that the game's success showed it does not always take a foreign sports star or top singers to fill the stadium. He also noted the affordable ticket price – as low as HK$80 – played a role. 'The success of last night's game has been a shot of confidence for sponsors and partners; it's important for us to capitalise on this opportunity to develop a host city economy and fan economy,' he said. Cheng said the concept encompassed game planning, ticket sales, venue management, public relations, merchandise, sponsorship, and more.
