Starbucks Making Major Changes to Stores in New York, California

Starbucks has begun rolling out an extensive redesign of its stores in New York and Southern California under the leadership of CEO Brian Niccol, as part of the company's "Back to Starbucks" plan.
The chain is introducing premium features across these locations, including lounge-style seating, warmer lighting, and locally inspired wall art, in an effort to cultivate a traditional coffeehouse feel and encourage customers to spend more time in stores.
Newsweek has contacted Starbucks outside of regular working hours via email for comment.
The major changes come after Starbucks took a hit when its baristas went on strike before Christmas, waiting times for orders grew longer, and its Q4 earnings report for the last fiscal year showed a 7 percent decline in global sales.
Since stepping in as CEO in September 2024, Niccol launched the "Back to Starbucks" initiative to try to encourage customers to come back to the stores.
When he was appointed as the new leader of the major chain, Starbucks' shares leapt up 18 percent after two consecutive quarters of sale slumps, Fortune reported, suggesting there are lot of expectations weighing on Niccol's shoulders to bring the company's sales back up to speed.
The first remodeled locations, including stores in Bridgehampton and East Hampton, New York, now showcase cozy chairs, hardwood floors, and artwork on the walls that capture the spirit of the areas' local communities.
Starbucks has also brought back ceramic mugs for some in-store orders and reintroduced the self-service condiment bar. Baristas were also instructed to be welcoming to customers and leave hand-written notes on cups.
The redesigns are part of a comprehensive strategy to reverse the downward slope in sales by enhancing the customer experience and reestablishing Starbucks as a welcoming "third place," a space of respite over coffee away from home and work—a vision first championed by former CEO Howard Schultz.
Alongside the aesthetic updates, Starbucks has focused on operational changes such as streamlining its food and beverage menu, by reducing some options for customizations, and introducing a new order sequencing algorithm to reduce wait times.
The company said that the measures enabled three-quarters of orders at test locations to arrive in under 4 minutes during peak hours, Fortune reported.
In June, Starbucks also hosted over 14,000 coffeehouse leaders from across North America at its Leadership Experience 2025 in Las Vegas in June, as part of the initiative. At the event, leaders had the chance to engage in workshops, connect and network, and hear directly from company leaders.
Starbucks' CEO Brian Niccol said in June: "'Getting 'Back to Starbucks' means refocusing on what has always set us apart — a welcoming coffeehouse where people gather, and where we serve the finest coffee, handcrafted by our skilled baristas. We are bringing together our coffeehouse leaders from across North America to celebrate, empower and equip them to accelerate our transformation.
"The coffeehouse experience defines the Starbucks brand, and these leaders and their teams bring that experience to life for millions of customers every day."
Starbucks' Chief Operating Officer (COO) Mike Grams said in June: "This isn't just a reset—it's a recommitment to who we are when we are at our best. We're making progress, have real momentum with our 'Back to Starbucks' plan and are on the right track to turn the business around.
"Our turnaround is rooted in listening—to partners and customers—and taking action on what we hear. We're listening and testing in the coffeehouse, and then applying our learnings to scale quickly and enhance the customer and partner experience."
Continued changes and refurbishments are expected in stores as part of the "Back to Starbucks" initiative.

After a cancer diagnosis in her early 20's right out of college, Loren Castle poured her heart into her healthy refrigerated cookie dough brand Sweet Loren's. Disillusioned with unfulfilling 'real' jobs and growing more concerned with her health, she quit the corporate world for good to launch her $120 million business that's now stocking the refrigerated aisles of over 35,000 Targets, Whole Foods, and Costcos. There are many people out there feeling stuck in their full-time jobs, waiting for divine intervention or the perfect moment to jump ship. One entrepreneur found the courage to become her own boss after surviving a scary bout of cancer right out of college. In 2006, Loren Castle, the CEO of refrigerated cookie dough empire Sweet Loren's, was a fresh-faced 22-year-old who had just graduated from the University of Southern California. But three months later, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma: a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. While going through chemotherapy for six months, Castle was wrangling the issue of eating healthier while figuring out what her career would look like. 'After [recovering], my doctor said, 'Go be normal and get a real job,'' Castle recalls to Fortune. 'I was like, 'I can't be normal anymore.' Life is really precious, I want to make sure I find something that I'm super passionate about. I wasn't happy working for someone else in a job that I just wasn't really passionate about.' Four years after working unfulfilling corporate and restaurant-industry jobs, she finally found that passion—and turned it into a booming million-dollar business. Today, her healthy refrigerated cookie dough brand lines the aisles of 35,000 supermarkets, including chains like Whole Foods, Target, and Costco. Sweet Loren's rolled in $97 million in gross sales in 2024, and is on target to reach a staggering $120 million run rate this year. 'The goal is to take over the whole refrigerated dough section, and really become the number one player in the space,' Castle continues. 'While the big guys are asleep at the wheel, we know how to speak to millennials and Gen Z, the future shopper…I'm just really passionate about this because it started from a personal need.' New York-based Castle wasn't inspired to start Sweet Loren's because of her love for baking—in fact, she did little of it before her diagnosis. While her friends were out partying, her illness had forced her to change the way she lived, including the way she ate. Having a big sweet tooth, Castle was disappointed in the lack of wholesome cookie dough brands. So she took cooking classes and studied nutrition on the days she didn't have cancer treatment, opting for 'super-powered' healthy foods, and formulated her own healthy sweet treat. 'I started making my own recipe, practicing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of batches. And finally I [made] these recipes that I was like, 'Wait a minute, like, this is the best cookie I've ever had,'' Castle says. 'It turned what was a really scary, negative time in my life into like a superpower.' Castle started test-running batch after batch of health-conscious cookies while working other jobs on the side. During those years she worked at a boutique PR company, helped manage a restaurant, and had a role at a wine business. She was bouncing between roles that didn't fulfill her. But surviving cancer—and wanting to turn the nightmare of the illness into something positive—was the push she needed to finally start her own business. 'Life is short. I don't want regrets. I was so keenly aware of my feelings. If I wasn't in love with something, it was really hard to make myself do it,' Castle said. 'It got to that point of, 'I don't like my boss, I don't want to be making him money.'' After three years of trying and failing to find a job she loved and was passionate about, Castle pulled the plug and veered into entrepreneurship at 26. Now, what started as a personal necessity has become a game-changer for a much wider audience. Castle has enjoyed massive success by tapping into cravings for healthy sweet treats, especially among consumers with allergies or dietary restrictions. Selling nut-free, dairy-free, and vegan cookie doughs, pie crusts, puff pastry, and pizza doughs, Sweet Loren's reached a niche that has since blossomed into a bigger movement. Castle had already amassed a hoard of cookie fans from having her friends and families test the batches. But her real big break came in 2011, when she entered a baking contest in New York City: The Next Big Small Brand Contest for Culinary Genius. She swept the competition, winning both the people's choice award and judge's award. Sweet Loren's was officially on the map, and suddenly, hundreds of families were emailing the brand weekly asking for new dietary-sensitive options. In addition to the healthy cookie dough she was producing, they wanted nut-free, gluten-free, vegan-friendly sweet treats. 'Once I launched allergen-free [products], they became our number one SKU overnight,' she says. Castle says that her brand is now the number one natural cookie dough brand in the U.S., without private equity backing, VC funding, or glitzy billboard ads. 'It's not like we're pouring $50 million into Super Bowl ads and things like that. I think it's just that we really solved a problem,' Castle says. 'They just love the quality of the product and tell their friends and become advocates for it. Because we're raising the bar on what packaged food can taste like, and what the ingredients can be like. It's more of a premium.' Thinking about buying a $1 million home? It sounds glamorous — and maybe a little intimidating. According to Fortune, $1 million can still buy you a lot of house in most parts of the United States, as the median home sale price was $419,200. But before you start daydreaming about that perfect kitchen or backyard oasis, it's worth figuring out what kind of paycheck you actually need to afford that price tag without breaking a sweat. 'The ability to purchase a $1 million home depends on multiple elements which include personal income levels along with debt-to-income ratio and down payment requirements and interest rates and total financial responsibilities,' said Iwanowicz. The following analysis also includes the minimum annual income needed to maintain a $1 million home purchase. Here are some key factors to consider. According to Iwanowicz, a common rule for homebuyers involves putting down 20% of the property value which amounts to $200,000 for a $1 million home. The majority of buyers need private mortgage insurance (PMI) to get approved for mortgages that require less than 20% down payment. Find Out: 'A $800,000 loan amount will result after making a $200,000 down payment,' Iwanowicz explained. The mortgage payment amount each month depends on both the interest rate and the duration of the loan (30-year fixed or 15-year fixed). Iwanowicz noted the interest rate stands at 6% per year in this example for a 30-year fixed mortgage. 'An $800,000 mortgage at 6% interest with a 30-year term results in a monthly principal and interest payment of about $4,800,' he added. This also means that the calculated amount does not include payments for property taxes together with homeowners insurance and homeowners' association (HOA) fees. 'Annual property tax rates typically range between 1% to 2% of the home's total value,' said Iwanowicz. He explained that a $1 million home would require $10,000 to $20,000 annual property taxes which equals $833 to $1,667 monthly payments. And the cost of homeowners insurance varies between $100 to $300 per month based on location and coverage. Monthly housing expenses combining mortgage payments and property taxes and insurance would fall between $5,733 and $6,767, according to Iwanowicz. As far as income needed — he said the recommended limit for housing expenses in relation to gross income stands at 28% to 30%. Using this guideline, to afford $6,000 monthly housing expenses you would require a gross monthly income exceeding $20,000. 'This translates to yearly earnings of $240,000,' Iwanowicz concluded. Here, the lender evaluates the total DTI ratio of buyers, which combines every monthly debt payment including car loans, student loans and credit card debt. Iwanowicz explained that most lenders prefer a DTI ratio below 43%. With a yearly income of $240,000 ($20,000 per month) the buyer's total monthly debt payments including mortgage should not exceed $8,600. Still, even with these large sales, Nvidia shares are up on Friday, as the company breaks records. It is also worth noting that Huang still owns over 858 million shares through a mix of direct ownership, trusts, and partnerships, thereby remaining deeply tied to Nvidia's future.
