Bahrain and Qatar fly the Arab flag at the rebranded Asian Men's Volleyball Nations Cup

Daily Tribune11-06-2025
Bahrain and Qatar fly the flag for the Arab world this June as the fifth edition of the Asian Men's Volleyball Nations Cup lands in Manama with a new name, a sharper identity, and growing continental significance.
Formerly known as the Asian Challenge Cup, the tournament has undergone a facelift — not just in branding, but in status. It's now being positioned as a key fixture in the Asian Volleyball Confederation's competitive ladder, offering emerging teams a platform to break through on the continental stage.
Two Nations, One Mission
In a 12-team field dominated by East Asian and Oceania sides, the presence of only two Arab nations—hosts Bahrain and defending champions Qatar—has sharpened regional focus. Between them, they carry not just their own ambitions, but the hopes of a wider volleyball movement across the Arab world.
Qatar arrive with the swagger of reigning champions. After lifting the trophy in Bahrain last year, they return with the goal of back-to-back titles, and a squad rich in experience and tactical depth. Grouped with Australia and Kazakhstan, their route to the final won't be easy, but few would bet against them.
Bahrain, meanwhile, ride the wave of recent success. Having won the Arab Volleyball Championship earlier this year on home soil, the hosts are eager to channel home-court energy into a deep tournament run. Drawn into Group A alongside Indonesia and Thailand, Bahrain will need to be sharp from the outset.
Groups Set
The group stage format brings quickfire intensity, with only the strongest advancing into the knockout rounds. The draw has thrown up intriguing matchups and the promise of tightly contested ties.
The balance across the groups sets the tone for a highly competitive tournament. East Asian sides — led by South Korea, Chinese Taipei, and Thailand — remain the traditional pace-setters, while nations like Pakistan and Australia are expected to offer both physical presence and tactical nous.
Tournament on the Rise
The Nations Cup may only be in its fifth edition, but the momentum behind it is growing. From its modest eight-team debut in Sri Lanka in 2018, to a record 15-team entry in 2023, and now a rebranded, high-stakes event in 2025, the competition is becoming an essential stop in Asia's volleyball calendar.

Algeria crowned unbeaten champions as Bahrain wrap up with win over Kuwait

Bahrain finished the 26th Men's Arab Basketball Championship on a high last night with a 89-74 win over Kuwait, with Mustafa Hussain posting 20+ points yet again. Algeria sealed the title on Friday but gave a stunning encore at Khalifa Sports City—joining the Bahraini crowd to dance, chant, and celebrate in a true show of Arab unity. On the court, Bahrain came out flying. Having lost to Algeria just one day prior, the hosts weren't about to let Kuwait spoil their send-off. Mustafa Hussain Ali led with 21 points and 8 assists, while Wayne Chism controlled the paint with 15 rebounds and 2 blocks. Bahrain outscored Kuwait in three of the four quarters, with Ahmed Khalifa and Ahmed Salman chipping in 28 points between them. Kuwait, who finished the tournament winless, leaned on Abdulrahman Al Shammari's 28-point outburst and Abdulaaziz Alhamidi's 18. Algeria Crowned Unbeaten Champions Earlier, Algeria capped off their unbeaten run with a 78-70 win over former champions Egypt, who had struggled for consistency throughout the tournament. Sedoud Chakib, again dominant, poured in 25 points and earned Man of the Match honors. Egypt's Moamen Tareq had 18, but it wasn't enough to spoil Algeria's crowning moment. Egypt's Ibrahim Hisham praised Bahrain's hosting, calling the rapid turnaround after Tunisia's withdrawal 'nothing short of remarkable.' Final Podium Locked The day began with Tunisia fending off a late surge from Qatar to win 79-72. Oussama Marnaoui, who led with 21 points, said post-game the team 'finally clicked' after early struggles—including a Day 1 loss to Algeria. Djan Janik scored 32 for Qatar in a losing effort. With this win, Tunisia finished the championship in 2nd place. The Emiratis did not feature in yesterday's matches, but they stood in 3rd place on the podium.

Bahrain Builds Training Legacy

Bahrain is moving to the forefront of regional efforts in human capital development as the fifth edition of the 'Forum for Training and Trainers' opens tomorrow under the patronage of MP Dr. Maryam Al Dhaen. Organised in cooperation with the Arab Trainers Union and the Forum for Training and Trainers, the two-day event brings together more than 30 experts, academics, and training professionals from across the Arab world to discuss the latest practices and trends in professional development. Youth Focus Dr. Al Dhaen said her patronage of the forum reflects her belief in the importance of preparing a new generation of Bahraini trainers, describing it as an investment in the future. She noted that national talent has the potential to transform the training sector and advance human development across the Kingdom. Building a pool of highly skilled and knowledgeable Bahraini trainers, she said, would help shape future professional and intellectual leaders capable of offering innovative solutions to emerging challenges and reinforcing Bahrain's standing as a regional centre of excellence in training. This direction, she added, aligns with the vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the priorities of the government led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, which place youth empowerment at the heart of national strategy.
