It looks very much as if the Republic is about to miss yet another of its
climate change
targets.
Mobility Partnership Ireland − or MBI, a group of companies which have come together to try to exert more pressure on the Government to hit its sustainable transport targets − has said that far more ambition is needed to ensure that enough
electric car
charging points are rolled out by the end of this year.
MBI − which includes heavy-hitters such as Toyota's Yuko instant rentals service, GoCar.ie, Freenow, and payments service provider Payzone − has called on Minister for Public Expenditure

to instigate an 'urgent review' of the National Development Plan when it comes to the provision of EV chargers.
According to MBI, not only do the latest figures show that Ireland's transport emissions increased in 2023 − the most recent year for which there are precise numbers − but that installations of electric car chargers have fallen well behind not just expectations, but behind what we're legally committed to having.

Data from the Department for Transport shows that just 700 additional public EV charging points have been added over the past two years, bringing the total to 2,400 in 2024.
But, under the EU Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR), Ireland should have at least 3,200 public EV charging points in place by the end of this year. As a result, MPI says that it is concerned that the State is on course, not for the first time, to miss its EU targets.
Hugh Cooney, chairman of MPI, said: 'With Ireland set to miss its EU targets, a greater level of ambition is needed to accelerate the roll-out of Ireland's EV charging infrastructure. The establishment of a new infrastructure division and taskforce in the Department of Public Expenditure and review of the National Development Plan offer a timely opportunity to craft a coherent, more coordinated, and fully funded approach to developing Ireland's EV charging infrastructure. Transformative change is needed, and this should be reflected in the National Development Plan.'
The lack of a truly widespread, and indeed reliable, charging network for electric cars is cited as a major block on their uptake by broader swathes of Irish car buyers.
While registrations of new electric cars have risen significantly this year, by 24 per cent so far according to the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, that rise comes off the back of two very disappointing years in 2023 and 2024, both of which saw significant falls in electric car sales.
This EV malaise is being found in the rest of Europe too, and it's why many car manufacturers are rolling back on previous promises to become electric-only by the end of this decade; it's why major Chinese car makers are ramping up the development and sale of plug-in hybrid models instead of fully-electric cars; and it's why both the EU and the UK have recently amended the regulations surrounding the expected levels of electric car sales between now and 2035, allowing hybrids to stay on sale for longer, and deferring fines for not selling a sufficient number of electric cars.
While cost and reliability remain significant concerns for electric-shy buyers, some 34 per cent of Irish rural car buyers surveyed by car sales website Carzone said that the lack of a widespread charging network was holding them back from committing to electric power.
The Irish Times asked Darren Kinsella, new energy landscapes development manager at Schneider Electric, and recently appointed as the spokesperson for Electric Vehicles Charging Association of Ireland (EVCAI) −which includes the likes of EasyGo, ESB e-Cars, and other EV charging providers − why we're still waiting for an electric charging network that's good enough to convince wavering buyers?
'We'll see a substantial improvement by the end of this year,' Kinsella told The Irish Times. 'Because that's when the chargers supported by the latest round of 'LDV' funds from Zero Emissions Vehicles Ireland (ZEVI) are due to be completed. We'll also see 50kW chargers installed at 250 sports clubs this year. But it comes down to education and skills − we will never build all this overnight.
In terms of education, it comes back to the mindset of each individual person. The majority of people who own and will own an electric car will do the majority of their charging at home, and most of them will do less than 60km or 80km per day. So why do you need a car that can do 400km, or 500km, or 600km on one charge? It comes down to mindset and perception.'
Kinsella also reckons that we are still in the very early days of the development of the EV charging infrastructure, and that there are huge opportunities for employment in the industry. 'We are at the infancy of the infrastructure.
'If you think back to the earliest days of motoring, when you had to get paraffin from chemists to fuel your car − that's almost where we're at. But we have some of the best minds in the world in this country, the likes of ESB Networks and ESB International, are some of the most highly-skilled and highly-credited individuals when it comes to building out an electric infrastructure.
'I have spoken to people at senior levels in ESB, and the research and development, the projects and the pipeline with them is absolutely incredible. Mind-boggling stuff, futuristic stuff. And not just on the e-mobility side, but on the buildings, derivatives, sustainability, efficiency, the amount of work is potentially there in the industry for 80,000 people. For electrical contracting alone, we need 10,000 people just to keep up with this cycle, for the electrical installs and infrastructure.'
That does smack somewhat of 'jam tomorrow', however, and given that many promises around EV charging have been broken in the past, it may not be enough to convince sceptical buyers now.
According to Fabian Sperka, vehicles policy manager at European eco think tank Transport & Environment: 'Charging is perceived as one of the biggest barriers to people switching to electric vehicles, but the picture is improving fast. Now, governments need to go beyond the strict requirements of the EU targets if they are to convince more drivers. More capacity needs to be installed where the actual traffic is, and payments should be made simpler. There also needs to be a clamp-down on broken chargers.'

The decision by The Economist magazine to exclude Ireland from its annual ranking of the world's richest countries is not the first time comparisons of this kind have sidelined the State's economy, Even official EU statistics now sometimes leave out Ireland, particularly when looking at trends in trade. And private sector analysts often exclude Ireland when looking at Europe-wide indicators. Should we be upset? Not really. The problem, as the Economist puts it, is that Ireland's economic data is 'polluted by tax arbitrage.' Multinationals organise their tax affairs to declare as much profit as possible in Ireland, helped by accountants who are , as the magazine said , 'as versed in the arts of surreal creativity as James Joyce.' Ireland argues, with some justification, that these companies have ' substance' here – in other words they employ people and produce goods or services from Ireland. However, the extent of the profit declared here is well in excess of what would be justified by this activity. And so, on a range of estimates, as much as half of Ireland's corporate tax take may be 'windfall' – not directly related to activity here – and our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is very significantly inflated. Does this matter? It complicates analysis of Ireland's economy and more meaningful assessments now use other modified aggregates. Had the Economist included Ireland in its list of GDP per head, it would have been somewhere in the top half dozen countries. A more realistic measure would put Ireland in the middle of the European pack. READ MORE Unfortunately, Ireland's out-of-kilter data has created another problem. It has put the State in the spotlight internationally, including in the White House, where there has been focus on Ireland's trade surplus with the US, due almost entirely to pharma exports. The Irish GDP and trade figures may not reflect the scale of real activity here, but they do show major pharma production in Ireland for the US market and the impact of the associated aggressive tax planning. In that way, Ireland's mangled figures do still tell a real story.

Protesters demand action to ensure entry to Ireland for Palestinian students

Dublin college students staged a protest outside the Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, demanding the Government facilitate the evacuation of students from Gaza to take up places in Irish universities. The Representative Office of Ireland, in Ramallah, provides 30 scholarships to Palestinian students to pursue one-year master's degrees in Ireland through a programme with Irish Aid . Others receive supports from individual Irish universities, called 'sanctuary scholarships', which often include waived fees and a monthly stipend. Students from Trinity College, University College Dublin, Dublin City University and the National College of Art and Design gathered at Iveagh House where they called on the Government to 'make good on its promise to Palestinian students, both current and future'. READ MORE In July, nine Palestinians arrived in Ireland to begin their studies this September; however, protesters claim more than 40 others remain trapped in Gaza with no clear path to Ireland. 'With few safe passages out of Gaza, these students are being left cruelly stranded by the Government that invited them here in the first place,' the coalition of students' unions said in a joint statement. Photograph: Bryan Meade Speaking on the steps of Iveagh House, Harry Johnston, chair of Trinity College Dublin's boycott, divestment and sanctions group – a student-led pro-Palestinian organisation with no affiliation with the university's administration – said Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris and his department were failing those due to arrive on campuses. 'We're here today to demand that sanctuary scholarship students, people who have been promised places in Irish universities, will be allowed to take up those places,' he said. 'We have to do better as a nation that has experienced forced famine and the same displacement that is affecting Palestinians right now.' Hazen Griffin, from UCD's students' union, accused the Government of 'playing games' with the lives of affected students by not evacuating them immediately. 'To grant a student fleeing war and genocide a place at a university in another country with no extra support or financial help is nothing short of despicable,' he said. Mr Griffin read from correspondence the UCD union received from a Gazan student due to begin studying in Dublin. 'On August 18th, 2024, an Israeli air strike destroyed my family's home while we were inside. My father and brother were injured. It was the hardest night of the war,' the letter read. 'My dream is to study biomedical engineering. Growing up in Gaza, I witnessed hospitals without electricity, life-saving equipment broken and a lack of spare parts, and patients dying while awaiting basic treatment.' The student said he had witnessed his father suffering in hospital with no way to receive the correct treatment. 'That experience strengthened my commitment to pursue biomedical engineering, not just for myself, but for anyone going through similar tragedies.' She said she took issue with being told by the Department of Foreign Affairs that she should appreciate that the embassy has limited resources to support non-Irish citizens. 'We don't appreciate that and we don't accept it. 'The idea that the workload of an embassy and a few staff is so difficult that they can organise evacuation for nine students but not for 40 is outrageous. What really that language is hiding is a rollback on decency,' she said. In response, the department said it was aware of the 40 Palestinian students and was providing consular assistance. A spokeswoman said individuals must be in possession of valid visas and travel documents in order to travel to Ireland. 'Exit from Gaza is dependent on receipt of permission from the relevant local authorities, both in Israel and, in certain circumstances, neighbouring jurisdictions. Such permissions are outside the control of the Government of Ireland.'

Wall Street stocks fell, European equities rose and oil edged down on Tuesday as traders assessed the previous day's White House talks on the war in Ukraine, and looked ahead to a key meeting of central bankers. US president Donald Trump said he hoped Russia's Vladimir Putin would move forward on ending the war in Ukraine but conceded the Kremlin leader may not want to make a deal. On Monday, Mr Trump told Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy the United States would help guarantee Ukraine's security in any agreement to end Russia's war there, though the extent of any assistance was not immediately clear. Declines in Nvidia and other heavyweight artificial intelligence stocks pulled the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq in New York down. READ MORE DUBLIN Ryanair led a relatively positive session on Dublin's Iseq, rising by 1.3 per cent to €26.98, despite winning the dubious accolade of being the most complained about Irish company, according to new data from the consumer watchdog. Glanbia , which enjoyed a positive bounce in the wake of recent results, continued its climb, rising by 1.3 per cent to €14.28. AIB and Bank of Ireland rose by 1 per cent and 1.3 per cent respectively in line what other financials across Europe. LONDON Britain's main indexes climbed on Tuesday with broad-based gains, though advances were tempered by losses in defence stocks as investors assessed prospects for a Russia-Ukraine peace deal. NEW YORK US equities decline on Tuesday as earnings from Home Depot kicked off a string of key retail reports and as investors awaited a Federal Reserve symposium this week to set expectations for the path of interest rates.
