
Google's Vision: A Future Where AI Does the Googling for You
At this year's Google I/O, artificial intelligence wasn'tjust part of the story—it was the story. The tech giant unveiled a vision forthe future in which Google's AI doesn't just help you search, it does thesearching for you.
The centre of this evolution is AI Mode in Google Search, nowrolling out across the U.S. This new mode transforms the traditional search barinto an intelligent, chatbot-like interface capable of understanding complexqueries and pulling together comprehensive, curated responses. It's a step awayfrom the familiar list of blue links and a leap toward an AI that actively doesyour online legwork.
During the keynote, Google demonstrated how AI Mode couldplan a weekend getaway to Nashville for friends interested in food, music, andunique experiences. Instead of offering a basic search result, AI Mode createddynamic, themed suggestions such as 'restaurants good for foodies,' 'chill baratmosphere with live music,' and 'off-the-beaten-path attractions,' completewith a customised map and links to relevant sites.
Behind this capability is what Google calls its 'queryfanout technique,' powered by a custom version of its Gemini model. Liz Reid,head of Google Search, explained:
'Now, under the hood, Search recognizes when a questionneeds advanced reasoning. It calls on our custom version of Gemini to break thequestion into different subtopics, and it issues a multitude of queriessimultaneously on your behalf... Search pulls together a response and checksits work to make sure it meets our high bar for information quality.'
This means that what used to be several separate searchesare now bundled into one—executed and analyzed by Google's AI, which thendelivers a comprehensive response. The AI Mode interface even shows users howmany searches it's performing in the background.
Later this summer, a new 'Deep Search' feature is slated toarrive within AI Mode. It builds on the same query fanout approach but scalesit significantly. According to Reid, Deep Search can 'issue dozens or evenhundreds of searches on your behalf' to produce even more in-depth answers.
Another key player in Google's AI ecosystem is ProjectMariner, a behind-the-scenes tool that allows AI to perform complex web tasks.It can juggle up to 10 operations simultaneously and features a 'Teach and Repeat'capability, allowing users to train the system to perform recurring tasks.
Google is extending these functionalities to the Geminiapp's new Agent Mode, which also taps into Project Mariner. CEO Sundar Pichaigave a live example of how Agent Mode could help find an apartment in Austin byautomatically scanning listings on Zillow and surfacing the best matches.
Additionally, Project Mariner will soon integrate into AIMode itself. Rajan Patel, VP of Engineering for Search, demonstrated how thetool could locate baseball tickets and provide a direct purchase button—allfrom within the search interface.
What Google is proposing is a major transformation in how weinteract with the web. The company sees AI not just as an assistant but as areplacement for many of the routine search tasks users handle today. As Reidsummed it up:
'Google believes AI will be the most powerful engine fordiscovery that the web has ever seen.'

Samsung to start deleting inactive accounts soon: Here's how to stop it
Samsung, the South Korean tech giant, has decided to permanently delete all accounts that have been inactive for 24 months as a new move to ensure better data protection. Emails are being sent out to the IDs associated with users' Samsung accounts with a personalized date mentioned on each of them. If the user fails to take any action by the specified date, their account and all data associated with it will be permanently deleted by the company. This new 'inactive Samsung account policy' is aimed at preventing the personal data of users from being tampered with due to prolonged periods of inactivity which could increase risks of leakage. Data from your Google Account will still be secure since that is completely separate from a Samsung account. 'As per our service's policy, your data in Samsung Cloud including data stored in Smart TV, Family Hub, and Galaxy Wearable will be deleted,' the email reads. All such warning messages to intimate customers about this move will be sent before July 31. Since Samsung accounts are required to access any Galaxy device, it's fairly staple for all customers of the company to have one. If you wish to protect your data from being erased, simply log in to your account using a Galaxy device once again to inform the system that you are still an active user and wish to continue with your previous account. If you fail to do so by the date mentioned in your warning email, the company will consider that you no longer wish to receive the data stored on your previous account and delete all such material. Make sure you are still logged into the email associated with your Samsung account, otherwise you may never receive the warning mail. For those using a secondary Samsung account, the same procedure applies. If you switched to another mobile brand but wish to keep your hold account intact, make sure you log into it once before the assigned deadline.

Microsoft integrates AI shopping into Copilot app, bringing price tracking and smart comparisons
Microsoft has launched Copilot Shopping, an AI-enhanced shopping experience built into its Copilot app for web and mobile users, offering a streamlined end-to-end purchasing journey powered by artificial intelligence. The new feature is also expected to arrive on AI-powered desktop PCs in the near future. Announced during Microsoft's 50th anniversary celebrations, Copilot Shopping aims to transform the way users discover, compare, and buy products online. The system allows users to explore items based on natural language queries, track prices, view consumer reviews, and even complete purchases without ever leaving the app. According to a recent post by Microsoft Copilot's official account on X, the feature builds on the company's efforts to bring generative AI to everyday tasks. It comes shortly after similar initiatives by Google and OpenAI, which introduced AI shopping capabilities via Search and ChatGPT, respectively. Copilot Shopping works as a comprehensive virtual assistant that starts from product discovery and carries the user all the way to checkout. Users can ask specific or open-ended questions—such as 'What's the best smartwatch for fitness tracking?' or 'I'm starting to learn photography. What gear do I need?'—and the AI will respond with curated, interactive visual cards showing relevant products. These product listings include summaries, technical specifications, pros and cons, and user-generated reviews. Once a product is selected, Copilot compares prices across multiple retailers, showing users the most competitive rates. From there, shoppers can proceed to checkout natively within the app, avoiding the need to switch between different e-commerce platforms. One of the more innovative aspects of Copilot Shopping is its price tracking capability. The tool displays the historical price range of a product and allows users to set a preferred purchase price using a slider interface. If and when the product's price matches the desired level, the app sends a notification, prompting the user to finalise the purchase directly. Microsoft began testing the shopping feature last month, as reported by TestingCatalog. With its rollout now underway, the tech giant is positioning Copilot Shopping as an AI-first retail companion, offering both convenience and insight in an increasingly crowded e-commerce landscape.

UK watchdog pushes Amazon to rein in misleading product ratings: Know what happened
Amazon has pledged to step up its efforts in tackling fake reviews after reaching an agreement with the UK's competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The commitment follows a CMA investigation launched in 2021 to scrutinise whether major online platforms like Amazon and Google were adequately protecting consumers from misleading online ratings. The probe was prompted by the sharp rise in online shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed widespread manipulation of product reviews. This includes clamping down on a practice known as "catalogue abuse", where sellers artificially boost the reputation of a product by linking it to positive reviews meant for entirely different items. The CMA highlighted a common example of this tactic: shoppers may see a pair of headphones with an impressive five-star rating, only to discover that the reviews actually refer to a mobile phone charger. Amazon will now take stronger action against those engaging in such deceptive practices, including banning businesses from selling on its platform and prohibiting users who repeatedly post fake reviews. Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasised the significance of trustworthy reviews. 'Millions of people shop on Amazon, and star ratings and reviews play a crucial role in what they choose to buy. These undertakings mean shoppers can be more confident that what they see is genuine and that those trying to mislead them will face serious consequences,' she said. This move builds on a similar undertaking secured from Google earlier this year, as part of the CMA's wider effort to ensure online platforms take greater responsibility for protecting consumers. In a statement, Amazon reaffirmed its 'zero tolerance' stance on fake reviews and said the new measures complement its current initiatives. 'We invest substantial resources in preventing fake reviews from appearing in our store, including expert investigators and machine learning tools that analyse thousands of data points to detect suspicious activity,' the company stated. The new commitments apply specifically to Amazon's UK website and are intended to align the company more closely with British consumer protection laws.
