Scottish city centre to get first cinema in 25 years

A city centre cinema has been talked about for years, with the closure of the Robins back in 2000 leaving a hole in the cultural scene.
The Dunfermline Regeneration Trust has been making efforts to bring the big screen back, partnering with OnFife to make the seasonal arrangement a reality.

Project lead Derek Glen said: 'We know people in Dunfermline have been crying out for a city centre cinema for years, now we've made it happen, but if folk really want it to last, they need to back it by turning up.'
The cinema will feature its own tuck shop, selling drinks, popcorn, sweets and ice cream, so movie-goers can enjoy 'the full cinema experience'.
A statement continued: 'Whether you're after a low-cost family outing, a nostalgic night out, or just a good excuse for popcorn, Peacock Cinema is here, and it's ready to roll.'
On Sunday Muppets Most Wanted will be shown at 11am, before Alfred Hitchcock's romantic thriller To Catch a Thief at 1pm.
Tickets can be found by visiting the OnFife website, or purchased on the door.

Couple host wild West Lothian garden shindig in memory of their neighbour

It was transformed into the Saddle Up Saloon for last weekend's hoedown A big-hearted Bathgate couple who threw a shindig in the garden of their home raised over £2,750 for Marie Curie Cancer Care. ‌ Angie and Gordon Raeburn, who live in the town's Mill Road, know only too well how cancer can affect anyone at any time. ‌ Angie, 60, recovered from bowel cancer 12 years ago, and recently a much-loved neighbour of theirs, Ian Baynham, passed away after a period of illness. ‌ The couple's garden was transformed into the Saddle Up Saloon complete with swing doors for last weekend's hoedown. It's the fourth charity fundraising day they've held at their home since Angie's illness. Unbeknown to Angie at the time, her niece put her name forward for a mention in the Scottish Parliament a few years ago, in recognition of her fundraising efforts. They were encouraged to go for the wild west theme this time around by their two daughters, who are aged 34 and 30. ‌ Angie said: 'My neighbour Iain just passed away and was only buried six weeks ago. We held it in our garden last Saturday. It's our fourth one in 12 years. I had bowel cancer and it kind of inspired us to have our first one. 'We had around 80 people here and raised a total of £2,761 in the one afternoon. It was an amazing amount. ‌ 'The only things outwith the afternoon were raffles tickets which we sold at work, but everything else was raised in-house in the garden. 'It was a western theme, which came from my daughters as it's part of a big thing with the young pop stars now. 'We happened to tell the DJ from the local pub, Nick Gallagher, that we were having this and he came and done it for free and my husband made up a playlist. Nick also done the quiz, he's a fabulous man. ‌ "The only thing he asked for was some flavoured tea bags and we didn't have any, so I'm going to take him some up to his quiz night at the pub.' Gordon, 62, said: 'When our neighbour Ian had his cancer and he was dying, the Marie Curie nurses came in to care for him and comfort him. So that's why we chose them.' ‌ 'It was all very quickly put together,' Angie added. 'He was only buried six weeks ago after passing away.' The couple thanked local businesses; Present Time, Niche, Boghall Butchers, and the Bay Leaf Indian Restaurant for their kind donations and support.

BBC Destination X ban as host Rob Brydon exposes rule on contestants

The new BBC gameshow sees 13 strangers embark on a European adventure as they attempt to win £100,000. Rob Brydon has lifted the lid on a peculiar rule imposed on the contestants of his new BBC gameshow, Destination X. ‌ The ten-part series sees 13 strangers compete for a £100,000 prize and the chance to embark on an adventure of a lifetime. ‌ In a unique road trip, they are whisked around Europe in a large coach, clueless about their location or destination as they strive to decipher the truth from the clues, deceit, and lies they're presented with. ‌ With sensory deprivation onboard the bus and no contact with the outside world, the contestants are challenged to deduce their possible location after being given a series of clues and red herrings. They're gradually eliminated until the winner is left standing, based on their guesses of their locations at the end of each day, with the person predicting the furthest away from their actual location being booted from the game, reports Wales Online. ‌ Hosted by Gavin and Stacey actor Rob, who accompanies the players around the continent, Destination X has been dubbed a hybrid of The Traitors and Race Across The World. But unlike The Traitors, which was filmed in a plush Scottish castle, and more akin to the conditions contestants face on Race Across the World, Destination X contestants had to endure living on a bus during the month-long filming. This meant sharing a single toilet, prompting Rob and executive producer Dan Adamson to disclose certain rules that were implemented. ‌ Before the series went to air, Rob confirmed to journalists that he wasn't bunking down on the bus alongside the contestants, choosing a rather more comfortable arrangement instead. Dan then revealed: "You plan and you plan and you plan and we had the most amazing production management team, and you plan everything, you think of everything, but we set ourselves a rule which gave ourselves one problem, which was that there was no number twos on the bus, and that was the rule. ‌ "It's a worldwide rule, right? And then suddenly it was like, 'Why do these people need to go to the toilet so often?' "So we had to create a system, which was that we had a convoy behind the bus, we had a special car with a trailer that had a couple of porta-loos on it. ‌ "So we had to find places to pull over, and goggles had to go on, producers would chaperone them off, take them to the door of the porta-loo, get them in, goggles off, do your business, wash your hands, put your goggles back on, and back in the bus. It was stuff like that." In an effort to maintain the secrecy of the bus and contestants' whereabouts, they were forced to implement additional measures. "Even giving them food, everything had to be decanted out of any local containers, we couldn't give them food that felt specific to the country," Dan revealed. ‌ Speaking about the enormous scale of the high-budget programme, which was filmed across 32 days and required 190 crew members who needed 7,000 hotel rooms in 30 different hotels as they travelled 11,000 km throughout Europe with more than 40 vehicles, Rob revealed it was unlike anything he'd experienced previously. He hinted: "I love the thought of the scale of it, because I've never done anything in television with that scale. We go all over Europe to some fantastic places, so the appeal was working on a show of that scale." "We had the chance to turn Europe into a board game, so we immediately thought that the way we bring scale to the challenges is we just get incredible locations and we take over whole castles, we run a train on a public network, we take over cable car systems, the scale just goes up and up and it's like, actually, what fun can we have with those toys?" the producer Dan added. Destination X airs from 9pm on BBC One and iPlayer tonight.

Anne meets Ukrainian band at Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo rehearsal

Anne wore sunglasses and the Tattoo's official tartan as she watched a rehearsal at Redford Barracks in the Scottish capital. She watched international teams perform their displays of military drill, music and dancing ahead of the show's run beginning at Edinburgh Castle later this week. Anne viewed a Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo rehearsal (Jane Barlow/PA) As well as military bands from the UK's armed forces, this year's show will feature performers from the US, Poland and Switzerland. This year will see members of the Centre for Military Music of the Ukrainian Navy make their debut. The Odessa-based orchestra are engaged in rehabilitation projects as well as a number of cultural programmes. This year will also be the first time Alan Lane has stepped in as the Tattoo's creative director. A theatre director by trade, he is also a reservist with the Royal Engineers. Members of the US Air Force Honor Guard rehearsed their role in front of Anne (Jane Barlow/PA) The theme for this year – the 75th for the Tattoo – will be 'the heroes who made us' – with each night of the show's run celebrating a significant figure. Mr Lane told the PA news agency: 'The team here are fantastic, they've been making shows for decades, so I'm very confident they're a great team and they'll do a great job.' He added: 'International acts have always been an important component of the show and this year's no different. 'I'm absolutely delighted to welcome our brothers and sisters from Ukraine. 'Like all international acts, they've come to represent the best of their nation. 'We have some extraordinary Ukrainian military music and some Ukrainian cultural dancing as well so I think the audience are going to really enjoy that.'
