New York Jets should end farce competition at center, name Joe Tippmann starter
New York Jets center Joe Tippmann is among the team's most ascending players. The guard-turned-center was one of few bright spots throughout the 2024 season. So many considered it a surprise when new general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn signed veteran center Josh Myers this offseason and entered him in a competition with Tippmann for the No. 1 spot. Tippmann has made the most of this competition, using it as an internal tool to motivate. Glenn has consistently doubled down on the competition. The Jets should end this farce and officially name Tippmann the starter: Tippmann has consistently outplayed Myers during training camp, continuing that theme at recent joint practices with the New York Giants. Tippmann was also the far better player in Week 1 of the preseason, earning an overall offensive grade of 60.9 (79.2 in pass protection) from Pro Football Focus. By comparison, Myers scored a lackluster 48.5. The Jets are giving the veteran Myers every opportunity to legitimately compete with Tippmann. The difference in quality between the two players has been stark. Myers especially struggled versus the Giants defensive line in joint practice. The Jets are rebuilding and Tippmann is a roster building block. He should be named the starter asap.
