‘Twilight of the Warriors' dominates at Hong Kong Film Awards, while Sean Lau wins Best Actor
Soi Cheang's martial arts epic was nominated in 14 categories at the HKFA 2025, and ended up winning nine awards, for Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Costume & Makeup Design, Best Action Choreography, Best Sound Design, Best Visual Effects, as well as the top prize of Best Film. This action thriller set in the old Kowloon Walled City of the 80s is one of Hong Kong's most successful pictures in recent years, attracting at least 1.59 million box office views since premiering in May 2024, was chosen to represent our city in the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, and was also shown in the Midnight Screening of the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
The Last Dance was also a firm favourite for many, receiving the most number of nominations at this year's HKFA at 18 categories. This drama about a Taoist priest and a wedding planner who team up to run funeral services won a total of five awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Original Film Score, and Best Original Film Song. Notably, Michelle Wai won Best Actress for her work in this film, while Tommy Chu took home the Best Supporting Actor award, winning against other established talents such as Louis Koo, Paul Chun Pui, Siuyea Lo Chun-yip, and Philip Ng. The Last Dance is Hong Kong's highest-grossing film.
Meanwhile, the honour of the Best Actor award went to Sean Lau for his role in the gripping and heartwrenching drama Papa. Other nominated actors in the category include Raymond Lam for Twilight of the Warriors, Neo Yau Hawk Sau for The Way We Talk, Michael Hui for The Last Dance, and Aaron Kwok for Rob N Roll. This marks Lau's fourth win in this category of the HKFA, and just last month, he also won Best Actor for this movie at the 18th Asian Film Awards. In total, Papa clinched three wins last night, including Jo Koo for Best Supporting Actress and Dylan So for Best New Performer.
Other notable awards handed out at the HKFA include Robin Lee winning Best New Director for Four Trails, which documents endurance runners taking on one of Hong Kong's most daunting athletic challenges. The Taiwanese film Old Fox by Hsiao Ya-chuan was also awarded Best Asian Chinese Language Film. Finally, veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark and his long-time professional and romantic partner Shi Nan Sun were both honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award for their work in the Hong Kong film industry since the 80s.

Newport's Riverfront Theatre hosts Windrush celebration
The free event honoured the Windrush Generation through music, dance, storytelling, and community connection, bringing together people from across the globe in a joyful tribute to heritage and resilience. The afternoon was packed with live performances, cultural exhibits, Caribbean and Asian cuisine, and interactive workshops. Local charities such as Newport's AGE ALIVE were also present, highlighting the ongoing contributions of grassroots organisations to the city's diverse communities. Among VIP guests were two remarkable Windrush elders: Roy Mackpenfield Grant BEM and Vernesta Cyril OBE, whose stories embody perseverance and service. Roy Grant, a retired Jamaican-born engineer and author, shared his journey from hardship to innovation. After arriving in the UK, he faced racism and isolation, recalling the voyage as 'horrible, wet, cold and miserable,' worsened by seasickness and unfamiliar conditions. Yet he rose to become Newport's first Black production manager, pioneering carpet-cutting technology and later writing several books. Titles such as Patchwork Culture explore his experiences and the cultural ties between Jamaica and Wales. Vernesta Cyril OBE, born in St Lucia, migrated to the UK in 1962 with a dream of becoming a nurse. She trained at Royal Gwent and St Woolos Hospitals, serving for over 40 years as a midwife, earning the title Midwife of the Year in 2006 and an OBE in 1999 for her work in community relations. Vernesta recounted her journey with warmth, remembering the excitement of leaving St Lucia and the camaraderie among fellow Caribbeans aboard the ship: 'The worst part was the launch that took us to the ship,' she said, 'because the harbour was too shallow for that big boat.' Her career touched thousands of lives, and she shared a touching anecdote about actor Michael Sheen, who publicly revealed that Vernesta had delivered him at Royal Gwent Hospital, a surprise to Vernesta. Just weeks earlier, Vernesta represented the Windrush Generation at the Pride of Britain Awards, where they were honoured with the Outstanding Contribution award for their immeasurable impact on British life. From 1948 to 1971, over 500,000 Caribbean people came to the UK, bringing with them skills and determination that helped shape Britain's vibrant culture. As the music played and stories were shared, the Riverfront celebration reminded all in attendance that the Windrush legacy is not just history, it's a living, breathing part of Newport's identity.

Diogo Jota tribute ‘powerful' as Liverpool players deal with emotion
The Portugal striker died in a car crash with his brother Andre Silva six weeks ago and his family were back at Anfield to see the outpouring of emotion which left Mohamed Salah, scorer of the fourth goal, in tears at the final whistle. 'The main emotion I think should be how impressive and how powerful the tribute for Diogo was,' said Slot. Liverpool manager Arne Slot (centre) stood during a minute's silence in memory of Diogo Jota (Peter Byrne/PA) 'The banner that the Kop showed, the way 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was sung, the way they sung the song for Diogo before the game, in the first minute, after 20 minutes, after the game. It was all so, so impressive and so powerful. 'And then there was even a game that ended in 4-2 where a lot of things happened. 'I actually didn't want to go in after the game because I found it so special, how our fans reacted today. 'I think Mo felt, after the game, how special that was. He probably also felt the emotion because we all knew his (Jota's) family is here, his wife is here, his children are here. 'For them, it might be special to hear how much he is loved over here. What the fans did. But we also feel the emotions of how much grief they still have. 'That mixed emotions maybe led to Mo being emotional. I think I felt the same without being in tears, but I definitely felt the same emotions.' On the football front Slot believes Federico Chiesa has a future at the club after the almost-forgotten Italy international came off the bench to score their decisive third goal. The forward, who barely played in his first season after struggling with fitness, volleyed home in the 88th-minute after seeing his team-mates concede a 2-0 lead given to them by new signing Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo. But after Antoine Semenyo, the subject of an isolated incident of alleged racist abuse in the first half, scored twice, fan-favourite Chiesa registered his first Premier League goal, which was followed by a customary opening-day goal for Salah. 'The fans sung for him so many times last season and it is very nice for him to give them something in return. Unbelievable atmosphere in the final minutes,' added Slot on the Italy international, who looked destined for a move this summer. 'He is here at Liverpool and I have no reason to believe it is going to change. He had a hard time last season getting his fitness ready and unfortunately for him, he then missed the Asian tour. 'At 2-2 you need a number nine: I brought him in and he delivered and that is always positive for your future at the club.' Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola praised Semenyo for his reaction to the first-half incident, which saw play halted so referee Anthony Taylor could speak to both managers. 'I didn't notice live but straight away Anthony explained the situation,' he said. 'It is a shame that in the first game of the Premier League, playing a really good game, we have to start talking about these things. 'It is a shame because the news will be about this thing. It is something that is still a big problem and we should be talking about what a good game it has been. He is really, really good at football. — AFC Bournemouth 🍒 (@afcbournemouth) August 15, 2025 'In the heat of the moment I think Antoine understood the situation. He was calm. We asked him if he is OK to continue. 'The head always goes in these things and for sure he is asking why this is happening today. 'Antoine started the season the same way he finished the last one. Different goals, the first more a combination to the left and he arrives well, the second one more he takes it by himself and a good finish.'
