‘England more confident, India seemed a bit negative': Kumar Sangakkara as tense Lord's chase hangs in balance
Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara believes England hold the edge after picking big quick wickets and suggested the Shubman Gill-led India were a bit 'negative' as they went about the chase.
'I think England will be more confident than India at the moment. The way I saw India bat, there were a few jitters. They seemed a bit negative,' said batting great Sangakkara to Sky Sports.
'Washington Sundar told us they wanted to be one wicket down, but I think they should have given themselves a target of runs,' he added.
India got off to a horrendous start in the fourth innings, with opener Yashasvi Jaiswal falling prey to a bouncer from Jofra Archer on duck. Then followed a counter-attack by opener KL Rahul and No. 3 Karun Nair before the latter's lack of concentration saw him get trapped in front after playing a no-shot to a menacing in-swinger of Brydon Carse.
Shubman Gill looked tentative from the very start and was found plumb in front off Carse. The nightwatchman Akash Deep did well to prevent Rahul from getting strikes, but was cleaned up by Ben Stokes as the last dismissal of the day.
Clutch wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant is the next batter to come for the visitors and Sangakkara believes the duo of Rahul and Pant can bail out the guests.
'If Rahul and Pant can stretch this partnership to beyond 100 for the team, then India are back in the driving seat. Pant will play his shots. You can't go into your shell. If India do, England will be further in front. India must bat smart. Rahul can anchor but the rest have to score runs,' he said.
Spin-bowling all-rounder Washington Sundar said India will win the Test. 'We would have loved to have about nine wickets but it is what it is and we'll definitely win the game tomorrow,' he said to BBC Sports.
'We just need to see what is required in that particular situation and do as it is. There is not much in the wicket when you are looking solid and looking to play to the merit of the ball, so we'll try and stay positive. We've got a long batting line-up as well, so it's going to help us in every way,' added Sundar.

India shield Jasprit Bumrah, but is Mohammed Siraj carrying the real burden?
India have made conscious efforts to manage Jasprit Bumrah's workload, strategically resting him to preserve his fitness and extend his career. After bowling over 150 overs in the Australia series earlier this year, Bumrah was rested for the second and fourth Tests at Edgbaston and The Oval—crucial matches that underlined just how carefully the team is handling its premier fast bowler, especially given his history of back contrast, Mohammed Siraj has shouldered a heavy workload with unwavering commitment. He has consistently led the attack across formats and conditions, often without respite. In the Edgbaston Test—where Bumrah was absent—Siraj delivered a fiery spell, picking up 6 for 70 and spearheading India's dominant 336-run victory over Siraj's wholehearted efforts have been invaluable, they raise a pressing question: is he being overburdened? Like Bumrah, Siraj's body and rhythm also need protection. Without timely rotation, India risk burning out one of their most reliable pacers. In their bid to preserve Bumrah, the management must ensure Siraj isn't left to carry the load effort, and endurance Siraj has been India's tireless workhorse in red-ball cricket this year, carrying much of the fast-bowling load with full commitment. In just six matches, he has bowled 167 overs—more than any other Indian bowler—showing how much he's put in. His 18 wickets may not seem huge, but they've come through intense, skillful spells, often on pitches that didn't offer much stars like Bumrah have been rotated and rested to manage their workload, Siraj has kept running in hard, bowling long spells and giving his all. His passion and willingness to take responsibility have made him the backbone of India's pace attack. But if this effort isn't managed wisely, it could lead to overs by Indians in Tests in 2025Mohammed Siraj - 6 matches, 167.0 overs, 18 wickets, average 37.55Ravindra Jadeja - 6 matches, 139.1 overs, 7 wickets, average 69.42Jasprit Bumrah - 4 matches, 129.4 overs, 16 wickets, average 24.81Prasidh Krishna - 4 matches, 89.0 overs, 12 wickets, average 36.50Akash Deep - 3 matches, 72.1 overs, 11 wickets, average 28.09Washington Sundar - 5 matches, 71.1 overs, 7 wickets, average 37.42Nitish Kumar Reddy - 3 matches, 37.0 overs, 5 wickets, average 30.60Shardul Thakur - matches, 27.0 overs, 2 wickets, average 72.00Anshul Kamboj - 1 match, 18.0 overs, 1 wicket, average 89.00No rest, no fussIn the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, Mohammed Siraj has bowled more overs than any other Indian—139 in total—showing just how big a workload he's taken on. He has picked up 14 wickets, the same as Bumrah, although at a higher average of Siraj's effort and energy have stood out, especially as he's kept going through long spells. His work has allowed the team to rotate other bowlers and manage workloads better. While others have had more eye-catching numbers, Siraj has quietly done the hard yards to keep India's pace attack ticking through the overs by Indians in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025Mohammed Siraj – 139 overs, 14 wickets, average 39.71Ravindra Jadeja – 136.1 overs, 7 wickets, average 67.71Jasprit Bumrah – 119.4 overs, 14 wickets, average 26.00Akash Deep – 72.1 overs, 11 wickets, average 28.09Washington Sundar – 70.1 overs, 7 wickets, average 35.85Prasidh Krishna – 62 overs, 6 wickets, average 55.16Nitish Kumar Reddy – 28 overs, 3 wickets, average 37.00Shardul Thakur – 27 overs, 2 wickets, average 72.00Tireless Siraj keeps movingSiraj's role in India's red-ball setup goes well beyond the current series—he's been a tireless workhorse over the last two years and throughout the previous World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. No Indian fast bowler has delivered more overs than Siraj in this period: 527.1 across 22 Tests, resulting in 62 wickets at an average of Bumrah has been carefully managed, Siraj has consistently shouldered the pace burden, often stepping in during injury setbacks or rotation phases. With the team choosing to rest Bumrah, Siraj has stepped up without hesitation—just as he has throughout the series and across ability to bowl long, high-effort spells has been crucial in holding the attack together. But even as he toils away selflessly, the growing demands on his body can't be ignored. If India are mindful about extending Bumrah's career, they must show the same care for Siraj—before the wear and tear begins to show.- EndsTune InMust Watch

India vs England 5th Test: Overcast sky, green pitch, moving ball - welcome to England, Day 1
The Oval cricket ground (AP Photo) in London: Overcast sky, green pitch, rain interruptions, enough for the bowlers all day, and hard work for the batters. Day 1 of the fifth England-India Test at The Oval had a very English look and feel to it. Even after 20 days of hard-fought cricket, that feeling was missing, and the opening day in London gave plenty of it. The beer taps continued to flow in the stands, but for a change, thanks to the weather, even the espresso machines had some decent queues when play got underway. The spectators had plenty of options to enjoy their cricket, but for the ones in the middle, patience was going to be their only companion. From the time Ollie Pope asked India to bat in those challenging conditions, it was clear that this was going to be the sternest examination of the batters in the series so far. This was the spiciest pitch of the tour, and it lived up to its billing with the assistance it provided to the quicks. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! There was activity in the air, movement off the pitch, and the odd one kicked off the surface. 204/6 has left the day slightly in England's favour, with Karun Nair and Washington Sundar being the last recognised pair, but it could have been much worse had the bowlers used the conditions better. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pensioners Can Buy These Electric Cars in Malaysia - See Prices Here! Electric Cars | Search Ads Search Now Undo Apart from Gus Atkinson, the others lacked consistent control, and there were looseners which allowed a release shot here and there. It wasn't easy to deal with the moving Dukes, and rain interruptions only made life more difficult for the batters. Two, read KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel, were guilty of throwing it away, one, read Shubman Gill, misjudged a run, and the remaining three got out to very good deliveries. Those three good deliveries were always going to come their way in these conditions, but it was the previous bunch of three which could have been avoided. England did release the steam when Karun Nair did the repair job, first with Dhruv Jurel and then with Sundar, but it could have been a much worse day for the hosts had those three dismissals not happened. India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate summed up the day as "fair" and felt if they can stretch to 300, it will be a job well done by the batters. He lauded Sai Sudharsan for his patient knock before getting dismissed by a Josh Tongue peach! "It's a fair day. If we can push to 300, it will be a great score. Guys by and large did very well today. Sai Sudharsan played very nicely… two very good balls by Tongue," said ten Doeschate during the media interaction. Ryan ten Doeschate press conference: On Jasprit Bumrah missing out, Shubman Gill run out, batting The coach felt Gill's run-out was a misjudgment from the skipper. "He is in the touch of his life; he made batting look easy today. England bowled very nicely today, and we spoke about accumulating runs during the break. Guys did a nice job accumulating runs, but it was a misjudgment of the run," added ten Doeschate. It was a bizarre day of play that had everything: a bowler sprayed all over but bowled two unplayable deliveries; a player who was not sure of playing in this game scored a fighting unbeaten fifty; and a series that was played on very batting-friendly surfaces dished out the spiciest track—for the game in which both Jasprit Bumrah and Jofra Archer didn't feature in the Playing XI. When Nair and Sundar come out to bat on the second day, they will be carrying the familiar feeling of not feeling set, no matter what score you are batting on. English conditions for you!
