Gulf unity is ‘key to tackling humanitarian challenges': KRCS
KUWAIT: Secretary-general and board member of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS), Fahad Ahmad Al-Mandeel, reaffirmed the long-standing commitment of Gulf Red Crescent societies as 'active forces in humanitarian work at both regional and Gulf levels.' His remarks came during the 21st Meeting of the Presidents of Red Crescent Authorities and Societies in GCC Countries, held in Kuwait on Wednesday. Al-Mandeel stressed that unity and complementarity among societies are essential to achieving greater impact and long-term sustainability. 'What gives us even more confidence and pride is the complete consensus among us,' he noted.
Al-Mandeel honored the memory of eight staff members from the Palestinian Red Crescent Society who lost their lives while serving in Gaza. 'Today, we are witnessing suffering across several Arab countries—Gaza under siege, Sudan and Somalia in crisis, Syria and Lebanon struggling—where humanity is being tested and lives are on the line,' he said.
Faced with these growing challenges, Al-Mandeel emphasized the urgent humanitarian responsibility of the Red Crescent societies to act. 'Our humanitarian responsibility compels us to establish unified Gulf coordination and adopt practical, integrated mechanisms that elevate joint action,' he urged. He added that the meeting will discuss key topics aimed at strengthening the humanitarian and relief roles of Red Crescent organizations across the GCC. 'Our collective efforts and full alignment give us strength and hope,' he said.

Strategic vision for 2025
Delivering the second address, Abdullah Ali Al-Rubaie, Head of the Human and Environmental Affairs Sector at the GCC General Secretariat, outlined the strategic priorities of the meeting. Central to the discussions is the implementation of the 2025 Strategic Plan, based on nine main pillars. These include expanding volunteer efforts, building human capacities, strengthening cooperation with regional organizations, and enhancing the Gulf Red Crescent's role in humanitarian, relief, and development sectors.
'Your decisions today are vital to advancing our joint humanitarian and economic efforts toward true integration,' said Al-Rubaie. He also stressed the importance of coordinated media strategies, joint disaster response frameworks, and the celebration of Gulf Red Crescent Day as a symbol of unity and shared humanitarian vision. The 21st edition of the meeting comes at a time of mounting pressure on relief agencies, as the region continues to grapple with ongoing conflicts, natural disasters, and humanitarian emergencies.
The Kuwait Red Crescent Society, under the leadership of Ambassador Khaled Mohammed Al-Mughamis, reaffirmed its commitment to deepening cooperation with fellow GCC Red Crescent societies and the GCC General Secretariat, particularly the Human and Environmental Affairs Sector led by Al-Rubaie. Together, Gulf Red Crescent organizations aim to boost visibility and operational effectiveness across the region, ensuring that collective humanitarian action remains strong, responsive, and united in the face of growing challenges.

Lives Lost In Kuwait Riggae Fire: Six Dead, Nine Injured
KUWAIT CITY, June 1: Riggae woke up at dawn Sunday to a tragic fire that broke out in a building, resulting in the deaths of six people: three at the scene and three in the hospital, while nine others were injured – all of them are Asians and Africans. Firefighting teams worked hard to rescue people trapped in the flames by lowering them from the top of the building through fire ladders and extinguishing the blaze. Emergency medical teams rushed to transport the injured to hospitals, in the presence of Public Security, Rescue, and Traffic personnel. Meanwhile, the Director of Public Relations and Media Department at Kuwait Fire Force (KFF), Brigadier General Mohammad Al-Gharib confirmed that the death toll in the Riggae building fire rose to six, indicating that three died at the scene and three died in the hospital. Al-Gharib told the newspaper that the first firefighting team arrived at the scene within four minutes, affirming that firefighting teams were able to rescue a number of those residing in the building and quickly brought them down through fire ladders. He said the firefighting teams extinguished the flames in record time and launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the fire. In the same context, KFF announced that firefighting teams from Shuwaikh Industrial Area and Ardiya fire stations, as well as the search and rescue centers, controlled the fire that broke out in two apartments in a building in Riggae. KFF revealed that some of the injured were treated at the scene, while others were taken to the hospital. It added that 15 ambulances were quickly dispatched to the fire site, along with intensified preparations to receive the injured at Al-Sabah, Farwaniya, Mubarak Al-Kabeer and Jahra hospitals. The injuries included first- and second-degree burns and suffocation. The videos posted on social media clearly showed the tremendous efforts exerted by the firefighters who rushed to the scene to rescue trapped people. Others rescued those trapped and escaping the flames. Dozens of the building's residents were rescued, as firefighters arrived at the scene quickly and professionally dealt with the incident. Furthermore, Farwaniya Governor Sheikh Athbi Nasser Al-Athbi Al- Sabah visited Farwaniya Hospital on Sunday to check on the condition of those injured in the fire. According to a press release issued by Farwaniya Governorate, Sheikh Athbi Al-Nasser was accompanied by Director of Farwaniya Security Command Brigadier General Mohammed Mutlaq Al-Mutairi, Assistant Director of Farwaniya Security Command Brigadier General Nayef Al-Hajraf, and Director of Farwaniya Hospital Dr. Ali Al-Mutairi. During the visit, Sheikh Athbi Al- Nasser received a detailed explanation from medical staff regarding the condition of the injured and the medical care being provided. He directed the concerned authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of the fire and ensure all necessary support and services are extended to the injured. The governor also offered his condolences to the families of the victims. He praised the efforts of the security forces and firefighters in containing the blaze. He stressed the importance of adhering to safety and security standards in residential buildings to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Kuwait begins work on Gulf War memorial in Washington, D.C.
WASHINGTON, May 29: Kuwait's Ambassador to the United States, Sheikha Al-Zain Al-Sabah, announced Wednesday the start of construction on a memorial dedicated to Operations Desert Storm and Desert Shield, to be located in a prominent area of downtown Washington, D.C. The memorial is set to be officially inaugurated in the fall of 2026. Speaking to KUNA during the Kuwaiti Embassy's participation in the U.S. Memorial Day commemorations, Ambassador Al-Sabah said, 'This historic memorial is a gift from the State of Kuwait to the American people in honor of the heroic deeds written with the lives and blood of Americans and Kuwaitis together.' She emphasized that the memorial will serve not only as a tribute to past sacrifices but as a lasting symbol of the partnership forged during a critical moment in history.
