Two suspected robbers killed in substation blast in Durban

News2416-07-2025
Two suspected robbers have been killed after they allegedly broke into the Cocos and Bauhenia Mini Substation in Lotus Park, Isipingo, which led to a deadly explosion.
The eThekwini Municipality said the explosion occurred on Tuesday morning.
The City's Energy Management Directorate suspects that a group of four individuals illegally accessed the substation with the intent to interfere with live electrical components, which caused the blast.
Two of the suspects were declared dead on the scene, while the remaining individuals are believed to have fled.
A fire broke out as a result of the explosion, damaging the facility and causing a temporary power outage in parts of the area.

While electricity supply has been restored to some sections of Lotus Park, full restoration is expected by Wednesday evening. The substation has been isolated as preparations are underway to install a new transformer.
Philani Shange, acting director of the Energy Management Directorate, described the incident as a grim warning about the potentially fatal consequences of tampering with electrical infrastructure.
'Not only do such acts compromise the reliability of electricity supply for residents, but they also endanger lives - including those of the perpetrators,' Shange said.
The municipality has condemned all acts of sabotage and theft targeting the city's infrastructure and has urged residents to remain vigilant.
The City said in a statement:
We call on members of the public to actively protect community resources by reporting any suspicious activity near substations, transformers, or power lines.
Electricity theft, illegal connections, and vandalism continue to place a severe burden on the city's electrical infrastructure, often leaving residents without power and exposing communities to serious safety hazards.
The municipality has appealed to the public to immediately report any incidents of tampering or theft to law enforcement or the City's electricity fault reporting line.

Suspect still at large after Vacaville robbery, chase into Fairfield

A suspect in a robbery outside a bank in Vacaville remains at large after leading officers on a chase that ended in Fairfield, police said Friday. The Vacaville Police Department said officers responded shortly before 3 p.m. to a report from an employee of an area business who said they were robbed while attempting to deposit cash at a Chase Bank along Harbison Drive. The victim told police that they were approached by an adult man wearing a face covering, a light-colored shirt and dark pants, who forcefully took the cash deposit. Police say the victim, who was not seriously injured, did not report the suspect to be armed. Vacaville police said that the suspect fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan, with a vehicle matching the description being located heading westbound on I-80 toward Fairfield. The pursuit ended in the area of Tabor Avenue and Bristol Lane in Fairfield when the suspect abandoned the vehicle and ran from the scene, police said. Officers were unable to locate the suspect in the surrounding area. It was later determined that the suspect was involved in a non-injury crash on the freeway before the pursuit began, police said. Anyone who may have been a witness or has information related to the investigation should contact the Vacaville Police Department.

Plum homeowners impacted by home explosion nearly 2 years ago sue for property damage

Dozens of homeowners in Plum affected by a home explosion nearly two years ago are suing for property damage. A massive explosion leveled homes in Plum's Rustic Ridge neighborhood, killing six people on Aug. 12, 2023. The lawsuit names Peoples Natural Gas, Penneco Oil Company, Grasinger Homes and A.O. Smith Corporation as the defendants. Right before the explosion in 2023, there were problems with a hot water tank inside the home of Paul and Heather Oravitz. Their house was the center of the blast. This latest lawsuit was filed by a Montgomery County law firm on behalf of 33 other homeowners living in and around Rustic Drive in Plum. The lawsuit, obtained by KDKA, alleges that gas line leaks in the neighborhood allowed methane to build up in the basement of the Oravitz's home The lawsuit accuses Peoples and Penneco gas companies of failing to address over-pressurized gas line leaks, despite prior knowledge. It also cites the failure of A.O. Smith Corporation, the company that manufactured the water heater, to warn about the potential for external natural gas to impact water heater function and cause explosions. And finally, Grasinger Homes was cited in the lawsuit for building homes too close to gas lines, which created a risk of gas accumulation. Peoples Gas responded to the allegations made in the legal filings in a statement that said: "When this event occurred, Peoples immediately worked with the authorities to assist in the investigation to determine what happened. It is important to know that the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission conducted an extensive investigation and, at the conclusion of the investigation, found no evidence linking Peoples' public utility infrastructure to the cause of the incident." These latest lawsuits follow wrongful death suits filed by surviving family members of the six people who were killed. No official cause of the explosion has been reached.
