Raglan Golf Club reopens after complete refurbishment

Raglan Golf Club reopened at the start of April after being bought by new owners and undergoing a complete refurbishment.
The club now has 18 holes, a new clubhouse, a bar, and a café/restaurant.
The par 72 course stretches over 6,700 yards, set in the countryside within the historic deer park of Raglan Castle.
The course features ancient oak trees and views of the Blorenge, Sugarloaf, and Skirrid mountains.
The club also has a Trackman iO simulator, lessons, a golf shop, and a new castle-themed crazy golf course.
Laura Anne Jones, Senedd Member for South Wales East, said: "It's fantastic to see Raglan Golf Club back and better than ever, offering 18 holes once again on a stunning, refurbished, and already well-loved course.
"The greens are looking incredible, with lots of positive feedback from those that play there.
"Since re-opening, it has been great to see it so busy all the time, with golfers but also families enjoying the food, Easter crafts, the new play park, and brilliant new castle-themed crazy golf course.
"It is also great to see and hear many young people joining up as members to play - even my six-year-old has now caught the golf bug and is wanting lessons.
"It's a course on par with the finest in Wales, and there's also plenty on offer for a family day or to just go and relax and enjoy the fantastic food in the clubhouse and beautiful views on offer - the breakfasts are already making a name for themselves.
"When you visit, it's clear to see why there are lots of locals here enjoying what's on offer, but also why people are coming from far and wide too.
"What's exciting is that things are only going to get better, with a huge oak-beamed barn that will be available to rent for events, with linking accommodation being built too, and a new driving range on the horizon.
"It is most definitely worth a visit - especially if you are a golfer."

The exact date £1 bus fares in Wales will begin

The exact date £1 bus fares in Wales will begin All young people aged between 16 and 21 in Wales will be entitled to discounted bus fares from next month A discounted bus fare scheme for young people will start in September (Image: WalesOnline/Rob Browne) There are just two weeks to go until all young people in Wales aged between 16 and 21 will be able entitled to discounted bus fares. As part of a pilot scheme which begins on September 1, single fares for those in this age group will cost £1 and there will be £3 day tickets available too. ‌ In order to take advantage of the discounted bus fares, young people are being reminded that they need to sign up for a free mytravelpass. In September, the scheme will only be available for those aged between 16 and 21 but it will be extended for younger children in the coming months. ‌ It was previously reported that Welsh Government's pledge to offer all those under the age of 21 bus travel for £1 had not been fully agreed with bus operators before they were announced in the budget, raising concerns that children aged between 11 and 15 could end up paying more for public transport compared to those aged between 16 and 21. ‌ However, the Welsh Government has since announced that it will invest a further £7m to extend the scheme to 5 to 15-year-olds, from November 3. The plans were first announced in February this year as part of the Welsh Government's budget for the 2025-26 financial year. There had been concerns about whether the budget would pass as due to the way the Senedd has been elected, Labour needed support from another Senedd member but a deal with the Senedd's sole Liberal Democrat MS Jane Dodds meant the budget went through. Article continues below The concessions she got from finance minister Mark Drakeford in return included a pledge for single bus fares priced at £1 for those under 21. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here £15m has been allocated over two financial years (2025-26 and 2026-27) to support the discounted bus fares for 16-21-year-olds. Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales Ken Skates said: 'This scheme will make a real difference to young people across Wales, and will allow them to make journeys for work, education and leisure at a discounted price. Article continues below 'I would encourage those who don't yet have a mytravelpass to apply so they can take full advantage of the scheme when it begins on September 1.'

Senedd Member concerned over possible cuts to Powys buses

Passengers looking to travel between Newtown and Cardiff could face delays as major changes are coming to the route. From September, the T4 bus route between the Powys town and the Welsh capital city will reportedly undergo major changes, as Celtic Travel will be taking over part of the service. But this has created concerns that the direct link service will be scrapped. While currently, passengers can travel between Newtown and Cardiff on a single T4 bus with no changes, the new arrangement could see Celtic Travel operating the service from Newtown to Merthyr only, meaning passengers will need to transfer to the X4 service to travel to places south of Merthyr, such as Pontypridd and Cardiff. James Evans, Member of the Senedd (MS) for Brecon and Radnorshire, has expressed concerns over this X4 route taking longer due to additional stops in Treforest. He said: 'Transport for Wales' promises of an 'enhanced' service are a sham. Instead, we are seeing timetables reduced, direct buses withdrawn and significantly longer travel times to reach Cardiff. These contractual changes are not progress – this is a step backwards for the residents of Brecon & Radnorshire. 'We don't have a final timetable published as yet – but I fear what further changes they are planning next for the Brecon to Hereford route, and Brecon to Abergavenny route. 'Our bus services are a lifeline in this area, whether for travelling for work or social, and I cannot believe Transport for Wales think these changes are an 'enhancement' – it is the very opposite of that.' Further cuts to the T4 service include the reduction in the timetable and removal of stops at Bronllys and Talgarth. Mr Evans said he is due to meet with Transport for Wales officials later in August where he plans to discuss the concerns over cuts to these bus services. A Transport for Wales spokesperson said: "The T14 service between Brecon and Hereford will no longer operate as part of the TrawsCymru network. "The service will continue to run under the local bus network, ensuring continuity for passengers while allowing for greater alignment with regional transport needs."

Virgin Atlantic upgrades Cape Town route for summer season

Cape Town's direct link to London is getting a major upgrade. Virgin Atlantic has announced that its seasonal Cape Town–Heathrow route will now run from 13 October 2025 to 19 April 2026 - adding an extra 17,000 seats to the summer season. From 26 October, a new double overnight schedule kicks in, with flights timed for better rest and faster onward connections to all of Virgin's US destinations, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando. VS 478 departs London at 22:30, arrives in Cape Town at 12:10 (+1) VS 479 departs Cape Town at 21:55, arrives in London at 07:45 (+1) A special Easter extension will see daily flights continue through to 19 April 2026. All services will be on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with Virgin's signature Upper Class, Premium, and Economy cabins. Marc Harding, Virgin Atlantic's South Africa Country Manager, says the move cements the airline's long-term commitment to the market: 'These changes give customers more seats, more flexibility, and even better connections through Heathrow – making it easier than ever to travel between South Africa, the UK and the US.'
