F3: Tsolov ties all-time record in Bahrain Sprint showdown

Daily Tribune13-04-2025

Nikola Tsolov powered to his fourth FIA Formula 3 victory, holding off a fierce late challenge from rookie Freddie Slater to win the Sakhir Sprint Race under the desert sun.
Starting fifth on the grid, the Bulgarian Red Bull junior made quick work of the field, overtaking polesitter Joshua Dufek by Lap 9 to move into second. What followed was a multi-lap tactical scrap with AIX Racing's Slater, who had taken the lead early on.
Tsolov eventually made the decisive move down the inside at Turn 1 and resisted mounting pressure from Slater—particularly after a late Safety Car restart—to seal the win and match the all-time record for F3 victories.
Ferrari junior Tuukka Taponen grabbed third for ART Grand Prix, earning his maiden podium in the category. Behind him, Callum Voisin took fourth for Rodin Motorsport, while Martinius Stenshorne of Hitech TGR rounded out the top five.
MP Motorsport teammates Tim Tramnitz and Alessandro Giusti finished sixth and seventh, with DAMS Lucas Oil's Christian Ho crossing the line in eighth to become the first Singaporean to score points in Formula 3.
TRIDENT's Charlie Wurz and Noah Stromsted completed the top ten, while their teammate Rafael Camara battled back to P12 after a sluggish start. The Brazilian will start from pole in the Feature Race, scheduled for 12:55 local time.

Piastri triumphs in Spanish GP

Oscar Piastri drove with exemplary calm and control in a torrid race yesterday to beat rival and teammate Lando Norris as McLaren claimed a first Spanish Grand Prix victory since 2005 with a resounding 1-2 triumph. The 24-year-old Australian came home 2.4 seconds clear of Norris to extend his lead in the drivers' championship to 10 points with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finishing third after a dramatic finale. Four-time champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull went for a three-stop strategy that resulted in him losing third place in the final laps before being handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Mercedes' George Russell who finished fourth. It was Piastri's fifth win of the season and the seventh win of his career – and his eighth consecutive podium finish for McLaren, a feat that had only been achieved before by threetime champion Ayrton Senna and seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton. Nico Hulkenberg was fifth, from 15th on the grid, for Sauber ahead of Hamilton in a Ferrari, Racing Bulls' rookie Isack Hadjar and Pierre Gasly of Alpine. Two-time champion and local hero Fernando Alonso finished ninth for Aston Martin with Verstappen classified 10th after his bruising late incidents which prompted 2016 world champion Nico Rosberg to suggest he deserved to be black-flagged and disqualified. 'Great weekend' 'It was a bit of a surprise to see Max try a three-stop and it nearly worked for him,' said Piastri. 'But it's been a great weekend overall. The overall pace was really good and we could turn it on when we needed to – and I am just very proud of the work we've done this weekend. 'It's a nice way to bounce back from Monaco. It's been a superb weekend.' Monaco winner Norris started second but ceded his position to Verstappen on the first lap before battling back to follow his teammate home. 'Oscar drove a very good race today,' said Norris. 'I didn't quite have the pace to match him. We gave it our best shot. It's a long race and anything could have happened at the end of the race. 'We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better.'

Lando Norris Leads First Practice at Spanish Grand Prix as Teams Test Major Upgrades

McLaren's Lando Norris set the pace in Friday's opening practice session at the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton. Under scorching conditions at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, the one-hour session served as a testing ground for several teams trialing new upgrades. It was also the first opportunity for teams to adapt to the FIA's latest technical directive, which required stiffer front wings. During the first half-hour, most teams ran Pirelli's hardest C1 tyres to gather correlation data and evaluate the performance of new components against pre-event simulations. In response to the grass fires seen during April's Japanese Grand Prix—believed to have been sparked by titanium skid blocks—teams tested heavier steel skid blocks on one car per team. The steel skids weigh approximately 750 grams more and degrade faster than their titanium counterparts. Local favorite Fernando Alonso led early running on the hard compound, before Norris claimed the top spot. As the session progressed and teams switched to softer compounds, lap times improved significantly. Nico Hulkenberg briefly went second on softs, while Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets before being eclipsed by Verstappen and finally Norris. Norris's best time of 1:13.718 put him over three-tenths of a second clear of Verstappen. Hamilton followed closely in third, with Leclerc just behind in fourth. Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five in the second McLaren. Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson continued his impressive form, finishing sixth, ahead of Haas's Oliver Bearman and team-mate Isack Hadjar. Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda and Alpine's Pierre Gasly completed the top 10. The session ran smoothly with no major incidents, though Haas stand-in Ryo Hirakawa—filling in for Esteban Ocon—took a brief detour through the gravel. The other FP1 rookie was F2 star Victor Martins, who stepped into Alex Albon's Williams for the session.

Roglic abandons Giro d'Italia after latest crash

Primoz Roglic was forced to abandon the Giro d'Italia yesterday, ending a troubled fortnight for one of the prerace favourites on the Grand Tour. Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader Roglic left the threeweek Italian race after being caught in a crash alongside Richard Carapaz during the punishing 16th stage, organisers said. A five-time Grand Tour champion including the 2023 Giro, Roglic had already crashed three times in this year's edition, including in a mass pile up towards the end of Stage 14. Roglic was three minutes and 53 seconds behind overall leader Isaac Del Toro before deciding to start yesterday's 203km push from Piazzola sul Brenta to San Valentino, which features around 4,700 metres of climbing including three category one ascents. The 35-year-old had been one of the men to watch ahead of this year's race but was left way off the pace after losing 90 seconds during the previous stage on Sunday
