Cavaliers Make Coaching Announcement on Tuesday
The Cleveland Cavaliers received some tremendous news ahead of Tuesday's Game 5 matchup against the Indiana Pacers. This comes in the form of Donovan Mitchell overcoming the ankle injury that forced him to exit their Game 4 loss on Sunday, allowing him to suit up for Tuesday's do-or-die clash. Mitchell might not be 100% at this point, but the fact that the Cavs get their best player back on the court for Game 5 is an undeniably significant development for them and their hopes to extend this second-round NBA playoffs series. Advertisement That wasn't the only bit of good news the Cavs received before the game. The team took to social media before tip-off to make a big announcement about head coach Kenny Atkinson. "Kenny Atkinson has won the 2024-25 Rudy Tomjanovich Award, which honors an NBA coach for his cooperation with the media and fans, as well as his excellence on the court!" the Cavs posted on X. "This season, Atkinson guided the Cavaliers to a 64-18 record, the best in the Eastern Conference, and was consistently thoughtful and engaging with the media." This is the first time Atkinson has won this award, which is given by the Professional Basketball Writers Association (PBWA). Atkinson succeeds Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr, who bagged the title last season. Advertisement Atkinson has achieved this honor in his first year with the Cavs. He spent the last three seasons with the Warriors as an assistant on Kerr's coaching staff. Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson reacts in the first quarter against the Indiana Credit: David Richard-Imagn Images 'Kenny has always brought great candor, humility and a sense of humor to the job, and to his regular sessions with the media,' said PBWA president Howard Beck, via 'He's always eager to explain the nuances of the game and to discuss the bigger issues across the league.' Atkinson has a daunting task ahead of him on Tuesday night as he looks to lead the Cavs to a home win at Rocket Arena. Down 3-1 in the series, Cleveland has no other choice but to secure a victory in Game 5 in order to stave off elimination. Nets' Cam Johnson reacts to Knicks firing HC Tom Thibodeau
Brooklyn Nets forward Cam Johnson has been on vacation for awhile with the Nets not making the postseason in any capacity following a 26-56 record in the 2024-25 regular-season. While Johnson is no doubt working on his game to be a better player for Brooklyn next season, he is also lending his voice on important NBA topics, including the New York Knicks firing head coach Tom Thibodeau. "It's kind of crazy to say this, but the initial thought now is not really shock," Johnson said during his recent appearance on "The Young Man and The Three" when asked by host Tommy Alter about the Knicks firing Thibodeau. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that the Knicks fired Thibodeau despite leading the team to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000. Advertisement "I guess he kind of adds to complete that every coach of the year, from '18 to '23 has kind of found degrees of success," Johnson continued. "Kind of in the midst of it, being let go, but you kind of got to look at it from a team-building perspective. That team is a really good roster, and they're really close. So, I guess maybe ownership, front-office is just looking at it like, What can get us over the hump? I guess that's the best solution they had." As Johnson alluded to in his reaction, Thibodeau continues a line of coaches that have been fired recently despite either having good track records in their career or with their team having a good record. Since the beginning of the 2024-25 campaign, Thibodeau joins Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins, Mike Malone, and Mike Budenholzer as the coaches that were shown the door. While Thibodeau had his flaws when it came to distributing minutes amongst his rotation and adapting to adjustments made by opposing teams in real-time, he still took the Knicks farther than they had been in a quarter-century. Johnson, who is paying attention to the NBA outside of his involvement with the Nets, understands that Thibodeau may have needed to go, but also sees that the Knicks may be close enough that a coaching change could be all that is needed for New York to get to the Finals eventually. Kraken 2025 Draft Targets: Porter Martone
Porter Martone / Plenty of signs point towards the Seattle Kraken using the eighth overall selection on a defenseman, but if they are looking to draft the best available, and Porter Martone was there at eight, they could be all over it. Advertisement Listed at 6'3, 207 lbs, Martone is a physically imposing winger with the skill to match. Martone was considered a top-three pick for most of the season, but as the draft inches closer and the teams inside the top 10 are looking to solidify the center ice position, Martone has seen his name occasionally fall, although he's still expected to land inside the top five. Playing in the OHL with the Brampton Steelheads, the 18-year-old scored 37 goals and 98 points in 57 games, forming a formidable duo with Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf. Martone also played on Canada's World Junior team, scoring one goal in three games and for Canada's World Championship team, failing to record a point in the two games he played. The Peterborough, ON native, is known as a power forward, willing to mix it up physically and be a disruptive forward. With the puck, Martone is a playmaker. "While Martone is known as a power forward, it's more accurate to describe him as a playmaker. The patterns of the game seem imprinted in his mind. Constantly scanning the ice and knowing his teammates' tendencies, system's rotations, and the expected movements of defenders, he stays connected with linemates, avoids coverage, and puts himself in advantageous spots to make the next play. He builds deft passing plays, moves ahead of the opposition, and preys on defenders' and goalies' expectations, manipulating them to open up great scoring possibilities," EliteProspects 2025 NHL Draft Guide. Advertisement Martone has been rumoured to add to the long list of CHL players to make the transition to the NCAA, although no formal agreement has been made. If the Kraken elected to draft Martone, he would be a perfect linemate for any of Shane Wright, Matty Beniers or Berkly Catton. His game should translate to the NHL quite easily and should be very successful in the playoffs. Stay updated with the most interesting Kraken stories, analysis, breaking news and more!
