What 'Retro Movies' are playing at Bloomington's Starlite Drive-In in 2025?

Yahoo21-05-2025

Gearheads take notice: The Starlite Drive-in Theater's Retro Movies this year will feature plenty of grease, grilles and growling engines, ranging from the 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback from the Steve McQueen classic 'Bullitt' to the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in 'Smokey and the Bandit' and the 1994 Toyota Supra MK IV used in the original 'The Fast and the Furious' movie.
But don't fret if gasoline, gaskets and gauges aren't your thing: The Starlite, 7640 S. Old Ind. 37, will be offering plenty of entertainment for families with little ones, with such fantasy classics as 'The Dark Crystal,' from the mind of Muppets creator Jim Henson, or the animated adventures of Fievel Mousekewitz in 'American Tail' or the live action adventures of Atreyu and the dragon Falkor in 'The Neverending Story.'
Here's the lineup for this year's Retro Classics. Movies will start a few minutes after dusk, which means showtimes will vary. Admission to these movies is free.
You may be cool, but you'll never be as cool as Steve McQueen when he speeds after bad guys in San Francisco in his black 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback. Famous movie critic Leonard Maltin said the movie features one of the best car chases ever captured on film. Here's your chance to see it on a big screen.
This romantic musical comedy from 1978 features chart-toppers such as 'You're the One that I Want,' and solidified the star power of Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta.
Burt Reynolds, Sally Field and Jackie Gleason star in this 1977 action comedy road movie about truck driving bootleggers.
From the mind of Muppets creator Jim Henson, this dark fantasy revolves around a quest and a powerful crystal on a damaged planet.
Brothers Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) are 'on a mission from God' in this 1980 action musical comedy. And while they're asked to play 'both kinds of music: country and western,' you can hear plenty of tunes from other genres, from artists including James Brown, Cab Calloway and Aretha Franklin.
The 1986 disaster film was co-written by 'Jurassic Park' author Michael Crichton, stars Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz and has lots of special effects.
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Michelle Rodriguez are in this movie, but the real stars are the cars, smoking tires and roaring engines. Catch the original movie in this series — before it turned ludicrous.
Another Jim Henson movie, this one from 1986, and co-directed by George Lucas, of 'Star Wars' fame. This musical fantasy stars David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly.
The original 1979 Australian dystopian road warrior film starring Mel Gibson. Weird outfits, weird hairdos, lots of grime, dust, diesel and action.
This 1986 sports drama starring Gene Hackman is quintessential viewing for any basketball fan in Indiana or just those who love to root for the underdog. Inspired in part by the Milan High School team that won the 1954 state championship.
Executive produced by Steven Spielberg this animated tale tells the story of a family of mice that leaves Russia to find freedom in the U.S.
A Howard Hughes-penned comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and John Candy. Think bears and boats and lightning strikes.
Another animated movie executive produced by Spielberg, this 1988 adventure film depicts the adventures of a young apatosaurus named Littlefoot and his companions, which include a triceratops, a stegosaurus and a saurolophus.
In this 1988 adventure film, a group of kids (played by actors including Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Martha Plimpton and Ke Huy Quan) try to save their homes from foreclosure by following a treasure map that leads to the long-lost fortune of legendary pirate One-Eyed Willy. Goonies never say die, even if they hear, 'Hey, you guys.'
A teen (Kevin Bacon) moves from Chicago to a small town, where a strict dancing ban is administered by the local minister (John Lithgow.) You already know what's going to happen, but you won't be able to keep your feet still because of the chart-topping and Oscar-winning title track.
A Christmas comedy starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, the elf.
A 1990 sports drama starring fast cars and Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid and Cary Elwes.
This 1978 coming-of-age movie was written and directed by George Lucas and stars Richard Dreyfuss, Ron Howard and an at-the-time unknown carpenter named Harrison Ford.
The 2001 animated comedy features the voices of Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, John Lithgow and Mike Myers as the eponymous ogre who tries to rescue a princess.
This 1984 fantasy based on a German novel by Michael Ende tells the tale of young heroes fighting 'The Nothing' with the help of a night hob, a rock biter and a luck dragon named Falkor. Spoiler alert: Don't get attached to Artax.

Kermit the Frog Delivers Heartfelt and Inspiring Commencement Speech at University of Maryland — GeekTyrant

Kermit the Frog took the stage at the University of Maryland's 2025 commencement ceremony and gave the graduating class a moment to remember, one that was as heartfelt and inspiring. With that familiar green face and humble wisdom, Kermit reminded the grads that life, like The Muppet Show , is best when shared with the people who truly get you. Why did Kermit give the commencement speech at Maryland? Jim Henson, Kermit's legendary creator, and his wife Jane were both proud University of Maryland alumni—and fans of the Maryland Terrapins. So for Kermit, this wasn't just another speech. It was a homecoming. Kermit told the students: 'Now there is no guarantee that the show is always good or that it'll go off without a hitch or it doesn't have its hecklers. But the show must go on and if you're with your people then you won't have to do it alone. Because life is not a solo act. 'No it's not. It's a big messy delightful ensemble piece especially when you're with your people. These are friends that you might have for your whole life and there will be many others to collect along the way.' He went on to urge kindness and connection over cutthroat competition: 'So as you prepare to take this big leap into real life here's a little advice if you're willing to listen to a frog. Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side because life is better when we leap together … 'Because if I know anything it's important to stay connected to your loved ones, stay connected to your friends, and most of all stay connected to your dreams. No matter how big, no matter how impossible they seem, the truth is dreams are how we figure out where we want to go.' In an age when so many commencement speeches blur together with corporate jargon and polished clichés, Kermit's words felt personal and sincere. That's the Muppet magic. Underneath the felt and googly eyes is a philosophy that's never gone out of style… community matters, dreams matter, and even in the mess, the show must go on. For a graduating class standing on the edge of uncertainty, it turns out one of the most reassuring voices they could hear wasn't a billionaire or politician, it was a frog reminding them to leap together.

Hollywood Cool For Summer—Steve McQueen's Iconic Persol 714 Is Back

The actor Steve McQueen — the King of Cool - in a pair of Italian brand Persol's iconic 714 sunglasses. Persol- Mptvimages In 1968, Hollywood actor Steve McQueen stepped onto the set of The Thomas Crown Affair and, with a single accessory, changed the course of eyewear history — a pair of Persol 714 sunglasses. With their foldable design, Light Havana acetate frames, and blue crystal lenses, the glasses weren't just stylish — they became instantly iconic. Founded in 1917 by Giuseppe Ratti in Turin, Italy, Persol — short for per il sole, meaning 'for the sun' — quickly became a respected name across Europe, particularly among aviators, race car drivers, and adventurers. The brand's iconic 649 model , originally introduced in 1957 for Turin tram operators, gained cult status when Marcello Mastroianni wore it in the 1961 film Divorce Italian Style. Building on the 649's success, Persol debuted the 714 in 1960 — the world's first folding sunglasses. Retaining the signature Meflecto temples (engineered for a flexible, comfortable fit) and the distinctive Supreme Arrow hinge (inspired by ancient swords), the 714 could collapse into the size of a single lens, and making it a favorite among style-conscious travelers. The latest iteration of Persol's 714: A leather foldable case, a leather cord with matching pouch and a vintage-style envelope filled with rare archival materials. Persol And then came McQueen. In The Thomas Crown Affair, he played a billionaire playboy orchestrating a daring heist — but it was his Persol 714 sunglasses that stole every scene. Whether racing dune buggies along the Massachusetts coast, piloting a yellow sailplane, or sharing a silent chess match with Faye Dunaway, his shades were always front and center. McQueen wore the 714s in Bullitt (1968), famous for its iconic car chase, Le Mans (1971), a tribute to the 24-hour motor race, and The Getaway (1972), a high-stakes crime thriller. Persol This spring, Persol released its latest edition of the 714 Steve McQueen model — unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival at Casa Persol, the brand's private terrace at La Terrasse by Albane at the JW Marriott. Staying true to its heritage, this special edition features a folding premium acetate pilot frame, Barberini mineral glass lenses, and four bold colorways. A discreet plaque inside the temple bears the year '1968,' honoring McQueen's role in The Thomas Crown Affair. The latest edition preserves Persol's signature elements: a folding pilot frame crafted in premium acetate, Barberini mineral glass lenses, four colorways, and on the inner temple of the limited editions, a discreet plaque bearing the year '1968.' Persol The new minamalist collector's box contains a foldable leather case and a matching leather cord with its own pouch—embossed with the Steve McQueen logo, alongside a vintage-style envelope filled with rare archival treasures honoring the actor's legacy. Over the decades, Persol has graced the faces of cinema royalty including Greta Garbo, Daniel Craig (Casino Royale), George Clooney (Ocean's Thirteen), and Tom Cruise. These days, new-generation icons like James Franco and Australian actor Jacob Elordi — a self-declared McQueen fan — show Persol's staying power. Some accessories fade. Some stay in fashion.
