Six months later, with the help of the NGOs, the dog had made a full recovery. The other dogs, which were suffering from various ailments, were also rescued after being found abandoned.
Along with the dogs, three cats were also up for adoption.
The animals at adoption centre have been sheltered and brought back to full health by NGOs and now have the opportunity to become part of a family. 'You don't buy dogs; you adopt them. Dogs are part of the family,' said Shriti, a textile retailer who wanted to adopt the three cats.
'There is a common misconception that rescued dogs are not suitable for family life. My first dog was adopted too, and he was fine,' said Aslam Mirza, who wanted to adopt the Rottweiler.
The NGOs will first conduct a screening test for prospective owners. Once they are satisfied that the pets will have a safe home, the adoption process will be finalised.

Amid stray dog row, 24 puppies in Hyderabad find loving home

HYDERABAD: On Sunday morning, Jalagam Vengal Rao Park looked different. Instead of morning walkers, the lawns were filled with tiny Indie puppies, wagging their tails nervously inside makeshift enclosures. Families bent down to pet them, some already imagining life with a new four-legged member. This unusual scene was Hyderabad's way of responding to the Supreme Court's recent ruling on stray dogs. The court had ordered that street dogs be moved into shelters — a judgment that sparked debate across India. Some saw it as a step toward safety, others feared it was impractical and even harmful. In Hyderabad, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to turn the ruling into an opportunity. It held the 'Indie Puppy Adoption Mela', asking citizens to give these dogs homes rather than see them confined. The tagline was simple: 'Be a hero. Adopt, don't stop.' Of the 39 dogs that were kept for adoption, 24 of them got safe homes and a family. 'This initiative has been going on for five years. And in all these five years, around 3,027 puppies have been adopted,' Chief Veterinary Officer, GHMC, Abdul Vakeel told TNIE.

Most of the pups, barely two months old and once living on the streets, were adopted by families eager to give them love and care. "Strays shouldn't be treated as a menace. They deserve homes where they feel safe. We need to find ways to coexist," said Khairatabad resident Stalin Kondru. For Sneha Sri, a resident of Banjara Hills, adopting an indie dog was about having a pet that was accustomed to the environment here. "Many are obsessed with getting pedigree dogs as pets, but these dogs find it difficult to adapt to the conditions here. I've experienced it with my German shepherd too. Indie dogs are native, and they are as loving and loyal as pedigree dogs," she said. GHMC officials said the move aimed to tackle the city's stray population. estimated at four lakh. "Over 80% are sterilised but must be released back on the streets, as mandated by law. Adoption ensures they get real care," said Chakrapani Reddy, deputy director of GHMC's veterinary department. Adopters must follow rules, including sterilisation after six months, annual vaccinations, and regular health updates to GHMC. "These puppies deserve peaceful, happy lives," GHMC commissioner RV Karnan told the gathering, adding that similar drives will follow.
