Smooth ride for Glenveagh as Minister confronts housing crisis

Business Mayor24-05-2025

Foam stress balls shaped like hard hats branded with the Glenveagh logo were among the handful of goodies on offer to attendees of the Dublin-listed home builder's annual general meeting in the Westbury Hotel, Dublin, this week.
Not that the shareholders and executives present on the day needed them. Why would they?
Before the meeting, Glenveagh announced the expansion of its share buyback programme for the second time this year, from €65 million to €85 million. The company reiterated guidance for full-year earnings and said it plans to deliver some 2,600 homes this year, up from 2,415 in 2024, which was a 77 per cent jump from the previous year.
[ Has Fingal County Council found a solution to our housing crisis? ]
Outside the confines of the plush Dublin 2 hotel, a housing crisis is raging and patience with the Government's glacial pace of progress on the issue is wearing thin if it has not evaporated. Public and political frustration has boiled over in the early months of the new Coalition, exploding into furore over newly minted Fianna Fáil Minister for Housing James Browne's handling of the housing 'tsar' debacle.
Reassured, perhaps, by Glenveagh's share price performance over the past 18 months, chief executive Stephen Garvey cut a sanguine figure when asked about Browne's travails.
'I do definitely think the Minister is getting a rough time,' he told a media scrum after the meeting on Thursday. 'The Minister is, what, four months in the brief? I'm 20-odd years [in the industry] and I'm still learning what's involved in housing.'

But the Government parties – particularly Fine Gael, which has been in office for most of the past two decades – have had plenty of time to get their arms around the crisis. At a glance, the Coalition's response appears to be more of the same plus a new quango or two.
That might wash with the wider industry. Politically, however, a rocky road lies ahead for Browne and whoever is named to the top job in the Coalition's new housing agency.
Meanwhile, it looks like there is plenty of profit to be made and value to be achieved for shareholders in the homebuilding sector.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield expands virtual care to include pelvic health, joint pain

Highmark is continuing its efforts to increase access to health care by offering new ways for members to receive care virtually. The most recent addition is Virtual Pelvic Health, Bloom by Sword, a program designed to address pelvic health dysfunction, such as bladder issues, chronic pelvic pain and other symptoms. Highmark introduced it in July 2024 and has since seen more than 10,000 members enroll. 'Virtual care is an important part of Highmark's overall Living Health strategy,' said Mari Vandenburgh, vice president of health programs and solutions. 'Highmark believes it's our responsibility to make it easier for members to access the care they need when they need it,' Vandenburgh said. 'As an integrated health system, we are in a unique position to break down barriers to care by offering ease of access and use through our virtual solutions that can complement the care members are receiving in person with their provider of choice.' A new approach The Virtual Pelvic Health program is Highmark's second with Sword Health Inc., a New York-based AI health company that specializes in digital health solutions. It is part of Highmark's benefits and available to eligible health plan members at no additional out-of- pocket cost. Participants simply enroll in the program through the My Highmark app or member portal. Once enrolled, participants are matched with a pelvic health clinician and receive an FDA-listed insertable device and access to a mobile app. A personalized set of pelvic floor exercises are recommended, and the sensor and app work together to monitor the force, endurance and accuracy of the pelvic floor muscles during the exercises. 'That real-time feedback helps participants maximize their results,' Vandenburgh said. 'The Virtual Pelvic Health program provides convenient, on-demand access to pelvic floor care that is focused on both strengthening and relaxation,' she said. 'The combination of the sensor and the feedback that a user receives in the app really helps to monitor progress in their program. The app also provides educational resources to individuals that help to support behavior change and habit formation in the population of individuals that could benefit from pelvic floor support.' Participants have reported significant improvements in their quality of life, including a reduction in symptoms they previously experienced. Additionally, the program has helped alleviate the stigma often associated with pelvic floor conditions, improving mental health. Virtual joint health The Virtual Pelvic Health program follows Highmark's introduction of Virtual Joint Health, Thrive by Sword to self-funded plans in 2022. In that program, a licensed physical therapist assigns a series of exercises for people looking to alleviate musculoskeletal pain based on their specific goals. Participants then receive a tablet they can use at home as they complete the exercises. The tablet is equipped with advanced motion sensing technology to provide real-time feedback and ensure people use proper form. It also shares data with their physical care specialist to monitor progress and, if necessary, adjust their recommended exercise plan to better accommodate their needs. 'It really enables members to address their joint health needs at the time that's most convenient for them,' Vandenburgh said. 'They can do the exercises in the comfort of their own home, and it reduces the barriers of time and access to care if there are delays in getting appointments.' In 2024, the insurer expanded it to fully insured plans. So far, more than 36,000 Highmark members have enrolled in the program. The feedback has been positive, Vandenburgh said, with 88% of participants describing it as easy to use and 72% completing the program. Health outcomes also have been strong, with 69% of participants reporting a significant improvement in their joint pain and 35% reduction in the intent to pursue surgery to address their pain. 'Another positive outcome that users report is that 26% say they saw an improvement in their work and productivity impairment,' she said. 'We're also monitoring the behavioral health impacts of joint health and increasing screenings for depression and anxiety.' Expanded reach Highmark's virtual care offerings include a virtual triage tool, virtual primary care, a virtual urgent care clinic and virtual specialty care clinics for behavioral health, women's health and dermatology, as well as a digital diabetes management solution. Offering on-demand, virtual care helps people get the care they need to improve their health while lowering costs, Vandenburgh said. The Virtual Joint Health program, for example, has reduced costs by $112 per member per month in comparison to a control group. That savings can then be reinvested back into delivering a remarkable health experience, so it's easier for members to engage and manage their health. 'Virtual Joint Health and Virtual Pelvic Health deliver a win-win combination by boosting employer productivity and lowering cost, while simultaneously enabling employees convenient access to care and improved quality of life,' she said. 'We see continued growth in engagement and enrollment in our digital solutions and programs year over year.' To learn more visit Lauren Lawley Head is a freelance writer.

Hozier's First No. 1 Mounts A Big Comeback As A Sudden Bestseller

For many years, Hozier's career was defined by one hit single, 'Take Me to Church.' The breakout hit introduced the Irish singer-songwriter to the general public back in 2013, and it became a global sensation. In the years since, Hozier has released several successful albums, but no tune managed to match the popularity of the track that started it all— a t least, not until 2024. Last spring, 'Too Sweet' arrived and instantly became yet another worldwide phenomenon. In the year-plus since it dropped, the Hozier cut has, in many ways, outperformed its predecessor. This week, it even manages to bolt back onto several Billboard rankings, as listeners in the United States can't seem to get enough of the track. This frame, 'Too Sweet' performs especially well in terms of pure purchases, as the single returns to a pair of purchase-only tallies. 'Too Sweet' reenters the Alternative Digital Song Sales chart at No. 10. It's also back on the Rock Digital Song Sales ranking at No. 15. The cut had previously dominated both lists and spent at least 60 weeks on the two rankings. 'Too Sweet' isn't only a bestseller. The track also returns to Billboard's Streaming Songs chart. Notably, while Hozier's cut only appears on genre-specific sales rankings, it manages to find a home on the all-style, all-encompassing Streaming Songs list. The track has spent 48 weeks on that roster, and has already reached the summit. 'Too Sweet' manages to find space on more than half a dozen other Billboard lists this frame. It does appear on the global charts, but performs best in the United States. The smash lives inside the top five on several other lists, such as the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs (No. 2), Hot Rock Songs (No. 1), and Hot Alternative Songs (No. 2) charts. 'Too Sweet' is not Hozier's only charting success in the U.S. at the moment. 'Take Me to Church' holds at No. 20 on the Alternative Streaming Songs ranking. Meanwhile, 'Do I Wanna Know (Live at BBC)' — a cover of the Arctic Monkeys classic — is steady at No. 42 on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs list.

3 unexploded WWII bombs in Cologne force evacuation of 20,500 people

June 4 (UPI) -- More than 20,000 people in Germany were evacuated as authorities worked Wednesday to defuse three huge unexploded bombs from World War II at a construction site in the center of the city. A major incident was declared due to the danger from the bombs -- two 2,200 lb devices and one of 1,100 lbs -- with police making checks door-to-door in the Old Town and Deutz areas of Cologne after 20,500 people were ordered to leave and businesses, tourist attractions and stations were shuttered, the city said in a news release. The 1,100-yard-wide exclusion zone covers the city's UNESCO-listed 13th-century cathedral, 58 hotels, parts of the subway system, at least nine schools, day care centers, two retirement homes, a hospital, as well as city hall and many other sites. "The evacuation is the largest measure since the end of the Second World War. Everyone involved hopes that the defusing can be completed in the course of Wednesday," city authorities said. "This is only possible if all those affected leave their homes or workplaces early and stay outside the evacuation area from the outset on that day. We ask you to be cooperative and follow our instructions so that the evacuation and defusing can proceed quickly and without danger." Officials told Sky News the measures could remain in force for some time if the effort to defuse the devices was unsuccessful and it became necessary to detonate them, as that would require a major operation to contain the blast. All three bombs are American-made, but likely dropped by the Royal Air Force, which dropped around 1.5 million bombs in raids on Cologne between 1940 and 1945, some of them with as many as 1,000 aircraft, launched from bases in eastern England. However, as many as 300,000 of the bombs did not explode, according to experts, causing frequent scares when they turn up during construction projects or in dredging of the River Rhine, which runs through the heart of the city. Last year alone, more than 30 were discovered, forcing 17 evacuations affecting 36,000 people. The bombs were among around 2,000 that are found across Germany each year, according to the Smithsonian Magazine. In 2021, four people were injured in Munich when a World War II bomb exploded during construction work near the main train station and more than 65,000 people were evacuated in Frankfurt in 2017 after a "Blockbuster" 1.4-ton British bomb was found near Goethe University. That device was safely defused. German bombs are frequently discovered in Britain, which was heavily bombed by the Luftwaffe between 1940 and 1941 and in 1944, most recently last year when 10,000 people were evacuated after a large bomb was found in the yard of a suburban property in Plymouth. Naval and army bomb disposal officers extracted the device and took it out to sea, where it was detonated. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
