Karnataka man critically injured after falling into fire pit during Muharram ritual
Hanumanth was first taken to Lingsugur Taluk Hospital and later shifted to RIMS Hospital in Raichur, where he remained in a critical condition. The incident shocked the local community, which had gathered for the annual religious event.Mounesh, a relative of Hanumanth, said, 'He accidentally slipped and fell into the Alayi fire pit while walking nearby. The fire was too intense, and we couldn't rescue him immediately. Later, the villagers managed to pull him out. He was first taken to the Lingsugur Taluk Hospital and then shifted to RIMS.'In a similar incident from April, in Tamil Nadu, a 56-year-old devotee died after falling into an ember pit during a fire-walking ritual at the annual Subbaiya Temple festival in Kuyavankudi, Ramanathapuram district. The ritual, known as Theemidhi Thiruvizha, involves devotees walking barefoot across burning embers to fulfil vows.The victim, Kesavan from Valantharavai village, tripped and fell face-first onto the embers while running across the pit. A yr on, 310-bed Rims shelter home battles operational challenges
1 2 Ranchi: The shelter home (Vishram Sadan) of the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), built to offer affordable accommodation to attendants and relatives of patients, is grappling with operational challenges. The facility was projected to benefit around 90,000 people annually. But only 62 beds on the first floor is on offer against the structure's capacity to accommodate 310 people. The Power Grid Corporation of India began constructing the ground-plus-five floors' structure with a basement on a 5,034sq mt plot in 2019 and handed it over to Rims in July last year. The land acquisition cost Rs 17.82 crore. A total of 217 people availed the facility in January, 184 in February, 261 in March, 244 in April, 218 in May, and 164 till June 18. The public relations officer (PRO) of Rims, Dr Rajeev Kumar, said, "The aim is to ensure dignified and affordable accommodation to the attendants, especially from rural and remote areas. The shelter home is being operated internally by Rims owing to the lack of effective management and delay in onboarding an external agency." The hospital authorities reissued the expression of interest (EOI) last Monday, hoping to find a capable agency to take over operations. "Hospital authortities aim to ensure proper healthcare management. Hence, there is a need for a dedicated agency to run the accommodation properly," said a source. Accommodation is available at a subsidised cost of Rs 100 per day for families presenting an OPD or IPD slip, with payment accepted at any Rims cash counter. An amount of Rs 150 is charged per day from those staying beyond seven days. Dr Rajeev said, "Posters have been put up at multiple points of the hospital to generate awareness about the available accommodation among the patients and their family members." "We came from Simdega for my wife's treatment and had no idea that such a facility existed. We ended up paying over Rs 700 per day for a lodge nearby. If we had known earlier, we could have saved a lot," said Lakhiram Oraon, an attendant waiting outside the hospital ward. Rims would manage the shelter till an agency is finalised. One person has been assigned the task of a caretaker of the shelter home while a few take care of day-to-day maintenance, sources said.

Nat'l ST commission meets tribals opposing Rims 2.0 construction
1 2 Ranchi: Amid growing opposition from tribal residents over the proposed establishment of the second campus of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) at Nagri, on the outskirts of Ranchi, a five-member delegation of National Commission of Scheduled Tribes (NCST) led by member of the commission Asha Lakra visited the proposed site on Saturday and spoke to the locals. During the visit, the delegation interacted with the locals opposing the construction and assured them that their grievances would be taken into account. Following the visit, Lakra spoke to TOI and said that NCST has taken cognizance to the matter and thinks that the project must be shifted to a different location, in order to protect the livelihood of the local adivasi population. "The proposed site for Rims-2, which is around 272 acre in total, is largely agricultural land and livelihood of around 250 families solely depends on that land. If the construction of the project takes place, the tribals will lose both their source of income and identity, which will be in contrast to the mandates of the Constitution of the country. NCST is of the view that the project must be shifted to another location which is barren, so that the tribals do not lose their livelihood," Lakra told TOI. The controversy around the project has been ongoing for around two months now. In June, dozens of farmers in Nagri sowed seeds on the roadside after the district administration stopped them from working on their fields, which were marked for the construction of the new medical college hospital. The issue has also sparked political differences within the ruling alliance. While state health minister and Congress leader Irfan Ansari has publicly supported the establishment of the second Rims campus, calling it vital for expanding healthcare infrastructure in the state, his party colleague Bandhu Tirkey has taken a contrary stand. Tirkey has sided with the protesting villagers and urged the govt to reconsider the location of the project. Ansari on Friday told media that there should not be any opposition in matters related to state's development. "If the CM, who represents the tribals, agrees to the project, I think there must not be any opposition. The construction of Rims-2 will help create new employment avenues for the locals," Ansari added.

Free Wi-Fi in all govt hospitals in a month
1 2 Ranchi: The state health department on Wednesday said the patients and attendants visiting govt hospitals would be able to avail free Wi-Fi facilities within a month for easy access of health-related information, govt schemes, and other digital services. BSNL will be the service provider, the department said. Additional chief secretary of the health department, Ajoy Kumar Singh, said, "The move is a strategic step towards ensuring digital healthcare. This service is being introduced for patients' convenience, assisting them in obtaining information during their wait at the hospital," he said. "The Wi-Fi facilities will become operational within one month. All community health centres and primary health centres would also be equipped with this service in six months," he added. "All district hospitals would offer MRI and CT scan services. Besides, radiology departments would be set up in the five govt medical colleges — Rims, Ranchi; PMCH, Dhanbad; MGM, Jamshedpur; Hazaribag Medical College; and Dumka Medical College.
