Hyderabad: Erratic rain spells have thrown daily travel into disarray, with commuters struggling to book autos or cabs. Ride-hailing apps are showing fewer vehicles, longer wait times, and inflated fares, sometimes nearly double the usual rates, especially during peak hours.
For many, even short trips now cost much more than before. Sowmya Reddy, 25, from Kukatpally, said she has been paying almost twice her usual fare for the past three days. "I normally get an auto to my office in Banjara Hills for Rs 180–200, but this morning it showed around Rs 500. Yesterday, I waited 25 minutes for a driver to accept my booking. Just to get a ride in these rains, I end up adding Rs 100 as a tip," she said.
Drivers blame flooded streets, poor visibility, and heavy traffic for avoiding certain areas.
Srinivas, an auto driver from the western part of the city, said, "In some lanes and main roads, water reaches up to the footrest. If it enters the engine, the auto stops. Repairs cost Rs 500 to 1,000, which is more than my day's earnings."

Mohammed Saleem, who drives in Tolichowki, said rains often mean longer hours for less pay. "A trip that takes 15 minutes normally can take 40 minutes in rain. If it is meter fare, there is no extra pay for lost time.

Wet roads also make braking harder. It is safer to stick to less flooded areas," he explained.
Passengers say fare surges and cancellations are making travel unpredictable
. Anjali M from Cherlapalli said, "I usually travel to Secunderabad for Rs 80 to 90. Yesterday it showed Rs 250–280, and even then no one accepted the ride. Maybe there should be rules to control fares during rains."
Susmitha Meekala from Madhapur added, "Today, one auto driver charged me Rs 90 but took a wrong route. Many refuse bookings or demand at least Rs 50 extra before moving." With no respite from the rains in sight, commuters and drivers remain stuck in a monsoon tug-of-war, one over flooded streets, mounting repair costs, and spiralling fares.

Mahabaleshwar, Thoseghar & Mahalaxmi temple see large crowds; traffic on highways at a standstill

Kolhapur: Due to the extended weekend, popular tourist destinations in Kolhapur and Satara districts — including Mahabaleshwar — are fully booked. The surge in travel has led to heavy traffic on highways and congestion at several tourist spots, as a large number of vehicles make their way to these locations. Rain, road widening and flyover construction works have been causing delays of about two hours on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway due to heavy traffic congestion. Toll plazas at Khed Shivapur, Anewadi, Tasawade, Kini and Kognoli are also witnessing long queues. Jayant Sawant, an IT professional from Pune, said: "I was returning to my hometown Kolhapur, and the MSRTC Shivshahi bus journey took me seven hours to reach Kolhapur from Swargate, which is usually covered in five hours. At the Karad and Malkapur stretch, the bus got stuck for more than an hour due to severe traffic congestion." Hill station Mahabaleshwar is also packed with tourists enjoying on-and-off drizzling rains, a pleasant climate, lush green surroundings and a foggy atmosphere. Prices of hotels are seeing a sharp hike. Tourist spots like Lingmala Waterfall, Mahabaleshwar Temple, Krishnabai Temple, Kate's Point, Kas Plateau, Tapola, Bamnoli, Thoseghar Waterfall, Chalkewadi Windmills among others are seeing a huge rush of tourists. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Over 3 lakh devotees visited the revered Mahalaxmi temple in the city on Friday and Saturday. Safari vehicles in R'bore granted 1-year extension

1 2 Jaipur: Forest department has granted a one-year extension to safari vehicles in Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve. According to the order, the field director must ensure that vehicles permitted for safaris are safe, suitable for tourism, and meet prescribed safari standards before allowing the extension. Officials said the model validity of these vehicles will expire in 2026, after which they will not be permitted for tourism operations. However, following requests from associations and the absence of practical alternatives, a temporary extension was provided. "Tourists prefer Gypsies due to their manoeuvrability and suitability for rugged terrain. With the extension, Gypsies will continue for one safari season starting Oct 1," an official said. Currently, 556 vehicles are registered for tourism at Ranthambhore, including 269 Gypsies and 287 Canters. The Ranthambhore Vehicle Safari Owners' Union earlier submitted a memorandum to the forest department seeking an extension. The challenge, however, lies in the fact that Gypsy manufacturing was discontinued in 2016. While diesel vehicles are available in the market, their higher emissions make them unsuitable for protected areas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Officials said a petrol-based model was expected to emerge as an alternative, as petrol vehicles typically cause less pollution and are considered more compatible with eco-sensitive tourism. But no viable petrol option was developed, leaving both the department and safari operators without a substitute. Forest officials noted that a similar directive was earlier issued for replacing old Canters with newer models. Implementation was delayed due to the ongoing tourist season, but an extension was provided. With several companies offering Canters with improved technology and lower emissions, the department directed that alternatives be explored. Officials admit that unless a suitable petrol or eco-friendly vehicle is identified, both forest department and safari operators may face uncertainty when the validity of Gypsies ends in 2026. In Khargone district, an old bridge in Sukhpuri locality was submerged due to flood in the Kunda river. Traffic movement, however, continued on new bridges. Around 61 mm of rain in Bhagwanpura area of the Khargone district led to flooding in the Gomukh river. Heavy rains in Barwaha led to water entering many colonies on Saturday, disrupting normal life. An average of 28.30 mm of rain was recorded in Khargone district during the last 24 hours. A man, Kalu Pehlwan, was swept away while crossing the overflowing culvert of the Ruparel river in Khargone district's Chainpur (Jhirniya) police station area on Saturday evening. Despite eyewitnesses warning him, Kalu attempted to cross the culvert and was swept away midway. Due to flood water coming over this culvert, the Jhirniya-Bhikangaon road also remained closed for some time. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
