's Rs 365.42crore proposal to construct third and fourth lines between Attipattu and Gummidipoondi -- a 22.52 km stretch that forms part of the high-density Delhi–Chennai route and the Chennai–
Visakhapatnam
and Chennai–Bengaluru industrial corridors.
The proposal, submitted under the national umbrella for multi-tracking and bypass lines to ease congestion, has received endorsements from key railway departments. The railway ministry's formal approval is now awaited.
Once cleared, the project is expected to boost capacity, cut train detention time and generate an additional 8.71 million tonnes per annum of freight traffic. Financial and economic returns are pegged at 15.84% and 28.88%, respectively.

The stretch is already operating at full capacity, with utilisation projected to reach 107% by 2027–28. Southern Railway has completed the final location survey, and the alignment is free of major land acquisition issues.
But for residents and regular commuters in Gummidipoondi and Northern Chennai, the relief has been a long time coming.
'This is not a new demand. The proposal has been gathering dust for over a year,' said Suresh, a Gummidipoondi resident and advocate.

Justice Anil Kilor to head Nagpur bench as administrative judge
1 2 3 Nagpur: Justice Anil Satyavijay Kilor, who rose from the Nagpur Bar to the Bombay high court bench in 2019, is set to become the new administrative judge of the Nagpur bench. This follows the expected shift of incumbent Justice Nitin Sambre to the Delhi high court collegium shortly. The announcement was made by none other than Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai during last week's felicitation event hosted by the District Bar Association. "There's no need to worry about the future of PILs. Justice Anil Kilor will be looking after it efficiently," CJI Gavai said, reaffirming the Nagpur bench's long-standing legacy in public-interest litigation. He also praised Kilor's instrumental role in civic activism and judicial reform during his pre-elevation years. A native of Walgaon in Amravati district, Justice Kilor graduated in commerce from DNC College and earned his law degree from Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College of Law, Nagpur. Starting his career in 1992 under senior counsel Sanjay Jagtap, he soon emerged as one of Vidarbha's leading legal voices. As President of the High Court Bar Association (2017–19), Kilor secured land for its expansion, initiated welfare reforms, and oversaw the renovation of the High Court interiors and Bar rooms. His strategic interventions as counsel also helped Nagpur University reclaim 70 acres of land lost to encroachment on Amravati Road. Elevated as an Additional Judge on August 23, 2019, and made permanent on June 1, 2021, Justice Kilor is known for nuanced rulings, including a key verdict affirming that writ jurisdiction is maintainable even in the presence of alternate remedies. In another widely cited ruling, he granted Rs8.22 lakh compensation to a deceased homemaker's family, remarking that 'a woman has the most important role in a family, but is least appreciated. 'AICC tried to revive AJL': Rahul Gandhi's counsel in Herald case
Rahul Gandhi (File photo) NEW DELHI: All India Congress Committee (AICC) was not trying to sell assets of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the company which published National Herald newspaper, but rather trying to save the institution that was a part of the freedom movement, senior advocate R S Cheema, representing Rahul Gandhi , told a Delhi court Saturday. Cheema made his submissions before the court of special judge Vishal Gogne, which is hearing arguments on the point of cognisance of the chargesheet filed against Sonia Gandhi , Rahul and others in National Herald money laundering case. "In post-Independence period, it (AJL) was never a commercial institution. We (AICC) were trying to retrieve an institution which is part of the freedom movement heritage. The problem was not recovering the loan (given to AJL) but to revive it, to see that it comes back on the rails. AICC was not looking for profit from sales. This is a squinted version," Cheema said. According to ED, Sonia and Rahul, along with others and a private company, Young Indian Pvt Ltd, conspired to launder money by fraudulently usurping AJL's properties valued at over Rs 2,000 crore in exchange for a loan of Rs 90 crore. Cheema said ED's allegations were "crude lies". The senior advocate said ED made unwarranted inferences against Rahul by wrongly assuming that he was the person in-charge of AICC's affairs as its general secretary in 2010. According to the party constitution, AICC has several general secretaries at a point in time, and no one of them could be in-charge of its affairs, Cheema pointed out. The counsel further stated Sonia, then Congress president, was wrongly inferred as person in-charge of AICC when the loan was assigned to AJL. The arguments will continue against other accused, including Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian and Dotex Merchandise Pvt Ltd, on Monday.
