NDC calls on government to reconsider decision to allow felling of rosewood trees in patta lands

The Nilgiri Documentation Center (NDC) has called on the Tamil Nadu government to immediately reconsider the Forest Department's decision to not renew the Tamil Nadu Rosewood Trees (Conservation) Act. The NDC said the 'decision not only goes against all norms of conservation,' but could be a major embarrassment to the government in the coming elections. The withdrawal of the act would allow for the felling of trees from private patta lands, with ecologists voicing their concerns that trees that are located within reserve forests too will be more prone to being targeted by illegal timber smugglers. 'The 1995 legislation enacted by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa was a first of its kind in the country to protect the rosewood tree. It was enacted in response to a widespread call led by the Save Nilgiris Campaign to stop the rampant illegal felling of the endangered native species of the State. The prompt action of the Chief Minister was hailed as a forerunner to conserve such trees in the other states coming under the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve,' said Venugopal Dharmalingam, honorary director of the NDC in a statement. 'At a time when conservation of native trees are given the highest priority by the governments and the courts, a decision of this nature should have been taken at the level of the Chief Minister. The dubious reasons given by the Forest Department to annul the act betrays a sense of insensitivity by the officials. Native trees like the rosewood cannot be grown anywhere or so easily. Withdrawing the act will be a clear licence for the illegal felling of the last of the ancient trees which are listed under the red book of the International Union of Conservation of Nature,' he added. He said rosewood trees, Dalbergia latifolia, listed as a 'vulnerable' species in the IUCN Red list, were found in the Nilgiris region of Tamil Nadu and the Western Ghats, particularly in areas like Anamalais, Mudumalai, and Gudalur. 'These trees are known for their high-quality timber and are a significant part of the Nilgiri Biosphere. A rosewood tree, estimated to be 200 years old, located in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve was declared a Heritage Tree of Tamil Nadu by the State Biodiversity Board in 2017,' he noted, adding that the species holds special significance to the Badaga community.

Govt will last 5 years: Siddaramaiah

Mysuru, June 30 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah today dismissed speculation of rifts within the Congress leadership and reaffirmed that the state government will complete its five-year term 'like a rock.' Speaking to reporters in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, with whom he has been the subject of frequent leadership change rumours. 'What do you think, will I inaugurate Dussehra? DK Shivakumar and I are together, and this government will remain intact for five years like a rock,' said Siddaramaiah, directly countering the Opposition's claim that he may not be around to flag off this year's Mysuru Dussehra festivities. In a pointed attack on the BJP, Siddaramaiah said, 'They are known for lies; that's what they do. Sriramulu lost the election and is now making random statements. We are united, and we don't care about comments from them.' His remarks came in response to Leader of Opposition R. Ashoka's comments that the Chief Minister may not inaugurate the iconic Dussehra festival this year—an indication, he hinted, of an impending change in leadership. The speculation has gained momentum following visits by senior Congress leaders, including party general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala. Siddaramaiah, however, clarified the purpose of Surjewala's visit, stating, 'He is coming to strengthen the party organisation. He will do his job.' The Congress leadership in Karnataka has been under the spotlight in recent weeks following comments by state minister KN Rajanna, who hinted at the possibility of a party reorganisation. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge earlier today reiterated that such matters fall solely under the purview of the Congress high command. Despite internal speculations, Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar's joint appearance was seen as a strong show of unity aimed at silencing dissent and reaffirming the government's stability. Internal bickering for CM's chair has sharpened in Karnataka, law and order situation worsened: BJP leader N Ramchander Rao

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], June 30 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader N Ramchander Rao claimed that the internal bickering between the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar for the Chief Minister's chair has increased and as a result the law and order situation had worsened in the state. Speaking to ANI, Ramchander Rao said, 'Karnataka state is facing a Bengal-type situation wherein the appeasement policy has gone into a spree. Now, the internal bickering between the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM for the CM's chair has sharpened, and therefore, the government has lost control over the law and order situation. One section of the MLAs is defying the present CM, and they want DK Shivakumar to become the CM. Though it is an internal matter, it impacts the entire state. Corruption has increased in Karnataka, and the law and order situation has also worsened. The Congress is fighting among itself. Wherever the Congress is ruling, they have internal bickering and they are spoiling the entire state administration, and people are suffering because of their incapacities.' Earlier on Sunday, Karnataka Minister KN Rajanna stated that several political developments were expected to take place in the state and at the national level after September. 'As far as Karnataka and national politics are concerned, there will be a lot of political changes expected after September. But, we people in Karnataka think of only this chief ministership, the presidency and the cabinet reshuffle. But at the national level, it is also evident that those who are 75 years of age are not entitled to hold public office. That is the dictum that is the policy of the BJP and the RSS,' the Minister told ANI. Rajanna stated that since there was a demand for a reshuffle in the Karnataka Congress party, several people were aspiring to become ministers. 'In the Karnataka Congress party and the government, there is also a demand for a reshuffle first, so many people are aspiring to become ministers. Many people have their agendas. All those agendas will be coming into force, and those will take shape after September,' he further added. Earlier, on June 27, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had dismissed the remarks made by Ranjanna regarding possible political changes in the state, saying it was better to ignore such statements. He clarified that Rajanna only mentioned there may be developments, not that anything specific would happen. Speaking to reporters at Vidhana Soudha, Siddaramaiah said, 'There is no internal dispute in the party. Minister KN Rajanna has said that there may be developments in state politics. He said that he did not say that something like this would happen. It would be better to ignore his statement.' (ANI)
