Google's Calling Cards are rolling out now, and this is our first proper look!
TL;DR Google has started to roll out the Calling Cards feature in the Contacts and Phone apps. This feature lets you create a stylish profile for your contacts. This differs from Apple's Contact Posters, which only lets you create a poster for yourself. We've been tracking a Calling Card feature in Google's Contacts app for weeks now. We haven't actually seen this in action, but all signs point to Android's take on Apple's Contact Posters feature. Now, we've got our first look at this feature as it's rolling out to some users. We downloaded the latest version of the Google Contacts app (version 4.61.28.792249534) and discovered that the Calling Cards feature is now available. We didn't have to do any tinkering to view this feature. Furthermore, some users on Telegram report that they have this feature too. You can view our screenshots below and our video above. Perhaps the most notable thing about the Calling Card feature is that it works differently compared to Apple's Contact Posters. Apple allows you to customize your own picture and profile, letting you change how others see you, but you can't change other people's posters. Google's take, however, is the exact opposite. You have full control over how other people's Calling Cards will look, but you can't customize your own card. When viewing a contact in the Google Contacts app, you'll see a prompt to add a Calling Card for them. However, you can also add a Calling Card when adding or editing a contact. So there's no shortage of ways to add this card. Once you've decided to add a card, you can grab an image from your camera, gallery, or Google Photos. From here, you can choose a font style and color for your contact. Once you've chosen the font and name color, you'll be asked if you want to also use the Calling Card as a contact picture. But you can skip this step. Either way, your Calling Card will be synced to your Google account, so it'll show up on other devices. Don't want to miss the best from Android Authority? Files by Google is making search easier, but it comes at a cost
Files by Google isn't one of those popular Google apps that come pre-installed with almost every Android phone, and it isn't part of the Play Store's 10 billion downloads club, either. However, that's not to say that it's one of the worst-performing Google apps in terms of numbers, as Files by Google crossed the five billion downloads mark on the Play Store earlier this year. And now with a larger user base, the Mountain View tech giant is planning major upgrades to the app. A couple of months ago, the company was spotted working on a redesign of its file management app to align its appearance with Android 16's Material 3 Expressive. While those changes are yet to go live for everyone, Google has one more task at hand: improving the app's search capability. And thanks to Android Authority's APK teardown of Files by Google v1.8122 beta, we already know some of those enhancements it's working on. Files by Google may soon let you filter search results faster As things stand right now, if you want to filter search results in the Files app, you need to tap the Category option at the top of the main screen. This, in turn, will allow you to choose what file type you want the result to display. Google's plan is to make this simpler by getting rid of that "Category" filter and introducing those categories of files directly on the main screen. Image source: Android Authority Since there are various categories of files, you may have to swipe left or right to select what you're looking for, depending on the size of your screen. Even if you do have to swipe, it's certainly easier and faster than tapping "Category" and then selecting the type. The feature seems to be in the early stages of development, but folks over at Android Authority have managed to make it work. And based on the screenshots they shared, those filtering options at the top of the app's main screen make the interface look a bit more cluttered compared to the current UI. Everything else sounds like solid improvements. Moreover, as per the APK teardown, the company wants to introduce a new filter option that will let users choose whether to display files from internal or external storage. In addition, it's also working on a new "Other" category, tapping which will show files that aren't Images, Videos, Audio, or Documents. So, if you store APKs on your phone, you'll be able to quickly find the right one using the new feature. All of this will be possible only if Google rolls out these changes in future updates. But for now, there is no clarity as to when, or if, they will be available for general users. Given all the exciting features Google has in store for its file management app, it's perhaps the best time to give it a try if you haven't already. DirecTV's free streaming service is adding 9 new channels this month - here's what to watch
MyFree DirectTV, the satellite television company's free, ad-supported streaming service, is expanding its channel lineup with a slate of new offerings from Fox, NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery. Starting on August 14 (via Cord Cutter News), MyFree will receive three NBCUniversal channels. Two Fox channels and four WBD ones will follow on August 25. It may not knock Tubi off the list of best free streaming services yet, but it does bolster DirecTV's lineup. The new channels will offer an array of programming covering crime, culinary arts, paranormal mysteries, reality TV and sports. Here's what you'll get from NBC: Fox's two channels will focus on sports and The Masked Singer. There won't be live sports on the Fox Sports feed; instead, it will show documentaries, podcasts, and segments from the FS1 studio show. The Masked Singer will feature reruns, recaps and streams from the previous 13 seasons. Here's what WBD is offering: It's an expansion of the MyFree DirectTV ad-supported service that launched in November of last year with an initial offering of 70 channels. You can access the free service via your Apple, Amazon Fire, Android and Roku streaming devices or in the DirecTV app on your mobile device.
