Family's heartbreak after cop mowed down

Perth Now4 days ago
The family of a Perth cop killed in the line of duty when he tried to stop a car thief, before being dragged under the vehicle, have revealed their heartbreak at his future being 'taken away'.
Reagan Chown, 25, was sentenced in the WA Supreme Court on Thursday to 15.5 years' jail for the manslaughter of Constable Anthony Woods in June 2023.
He will be eligible for parole after serving 13.5 years behind bars.

Chown had pleaded not guilty to a charge of manslaughter but was found guilty by a jury earlier this year.
The court was told police had pursued the stolen vehicle, which had reached speeds of up to 83kmh in a 40km zone, before it stopped in a cul-de-sac in the Perth suburb of Ascot.
Constable Woods tried to arrest Chown and tasered him, but the 25-year-old put his car in reverse and hit the accelerator, dragging, trapping the officer under the car.
Constable Woods died from his injuries in hospital.
On Thursday, Constable Woods' mother Natalie read a victim impact statement to the court before Chown was sentenced.
Ms Woods said her heart was ripped away on the day Anthony died and she felt like she had 'died'.'He was doing his duty and he was protecting his community and his future was taken away,' she said.

Justice Joseph McGrath said during sentencing that Chown deliberately put his car into reverse and moved it backwards by putting his foot on the accelerator.
He said Chown was criminally negligent for the circumstances, rejecting his defence that being tasered made him not criminally responsible for Constable Woods' death.
'Police were still pursuing you to charge you with reckless driving, and you were driving a stolen vehicle,' Justice McGrath said.
'The police had every reason to form a belief that you intended to flee.
'You had reached the end of the road.
'That you are not criminally negligent is unacceptable.'
Justice McGrath said Woods was trapped under the car when Chown reversed at speed, losing control of the vehicle. Constable Woods was attempting to stop Chown in the stolen car when he was killed in the line of duty. WA Police Credit: Supplied
'I am satisfied you intended to flee from police and that you ignored the officers command and put the car into reverse and put your foot on the accelerator,' he said.
'You decided to get away and tried to escape.
'The movement of the car was done by you.'
'It would be fanciful to make a finding that Constable Woods somehow did wrong here, officers make split second decisions, (you) was speeding through Epsom Ave high on meth when officers intervened.
'This does not come close to some unauthorised discharge.'
Chown's defence lawyer told the court his client had become addicted to drugs working as a FIFO worker.
He said it was a combination of being away from his family, who lived regionally, having too much time off work in-between his shifts and his drug addiction – for which Chown said he was 'disgusted'.
Justice McGrath accepted that Chown did not intend to kill the officer.

Dad's vile discovery at daughter's childcare

A Melbourne father has revealed the horrifying moment he realised his child had been in the care of accused pedophile Joshua Brown. Abraham Khoury's daughter attended Milestones Early Learning Centre in Greensborough in Melbourne's north east last year and was horrified when he found a photo of the accused pedophile alongside Mr Khoury's daughter. Melbourne father Abraham Khoury said he found a picture of his daughter alongside the accused sex offender. Channel 9 Credit: Channel 9 The image was taken on December 5, which Mr Khoury said he found on the childcare centre's communication app. He claimed neither the childcare centre, nor police, informed him that Mr Brown had allegedly worked at the centre. 'To know that he was there, and we were all kept in the dark about it, no one told us, there was no information available,' Mr Khoury told 9News. 'You're angry, you've been lied to. You feel gross.' Channel 9 Credit: Channel 9 Mr Brown has been charged with 70 offences after he allegedly abused eight children at an early education centre in Point Cook between April 2022 and January 2023. It's alleged some of the children were as young as five months old. About 1200 children have since been advised to undergo testing for sexually transmitted diseases. The alleged offender worked in 20 childcare centres between January 2017 and May 2025, with a dedicated website established listing the childcare centres where he worked. The list includes three Milestones Early Leaning Centres in Hoppers Crossing, Werribee and Bundoora. However, the Greensborough centre was not mentioned on the list. 'We have to get our child now tested for sexually transmitted diseases,' he said. The Melbourne father said he contacted the Greensborough centre, which is owned by Affinity Education Group, but heard nothing back. He urged for more to be done to protect children while attending early education centres. 'There needs to be reform, there needs to be cameras,' he told the outlet. 'There needs to be just more, because now it's just the bare minimum.' He worked at 20 childcare centres across the state since 2017. Picture Supplied., Credit: Supplied This week, Inspire Early Learning – which operates 16 childcare centres across Victoria and is not among one of the centres where Mr Brown worked – announced it would no longer allow male educators to change nappies or complete toilet duties at its centres. In a letter sent to parents, chief curriculum and quality officer Eleinna Anderson said male staff would still play a 'vital' role in activities and classroom preparation, but said the changes were a necessary step. 'The wellbeing and safety of your children are at the heart of everything we do,' she said per 7News. 'We're writing to share a few important updates to our guidelines around staff interactions with children and team responsibilities – changes made with careful thought and a continued commitment to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all.' Police are continuing to work through material provided by centres across the state to confirm the 26-year-old's employment history. "We welcome the fact that people have been able to come forward with their advice, and we continue to ask them to do that," Victorian Police Minister Anthony Carbines said. Khoury has contacted Milestones Early Learning Centre, which is owned by Affinity group, but had no response. (9News) One operator has already responded with a proposal to ban male staff from changing nappies at its 16 Victorian centres. But industry experts have warned against knee-jerk reactions and said changes need to be implemented at a national level to ensure the best decisions are being made to increase safety in every facility. "Children deserve that safety from all of their educators and educators also deserve that peace of mind," Australian Childcare Alliance vice president Nesha Hutchinson said. "There needs to be reform, there needs to be cameras, there needs to be just more, because right now, it's the bare minimum," Khoury said. 'My heart sank': Father learns of son's crossover with alleged childcare paedophile Joshua Brown

Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here Exclusive: A Melbourne father has spoken out learning his toddler may have attended a childcare centre where alleged paedophile Joshua Brown worked, as the former childcare worker's employment history is revisited. A major police investigation saw Joshua Brown charged with 70 offences, including sexual assault, earlier this year. The charges relate to eight alleged victims at a Point Cook early education centre. Joshua Brown, 26, was arrested on May 12. (Supplied) About 1200 families were also contacted to send their children for precautionary testing for sexually transmitted diseases. Revelations emerged yesterday that Brown may have worked on more occasions than those listed on the government website. Melbourne father Daniel* did not initially think his family had been impacted, until an updated timeline revealed a crossover between his two-year-old son's attendance and Brown's employment at a centre in the city's west. "We didn't expect it, for us to be involved in it, and when we did find out my heart sank," Daniel said. "These are dates that the government weren't aware of, and yeah, it's just unfortunate that we had to find out that way," he told 9News. Premier Jacinta Allan said the website was being "constantly updated". (Nine) Because they were not initially contacted by the health department, Daniel claims his son was turned away from the test site and had to scramble to prove his toddler needed the test. "To make such big mistakes in this, with young children involved between, you know, five months to two years and, you know, to be cutting corners and, .... the communication breakdown has been very disappointing," Daniel told 9News. Police are investigating if any alleged abuse occurred at the 19 other facilities he worked at. Allan has assured parents the government is taking immediate action, yesterday appointing Jay Weatherill to review Victoria's childcare sector. "Jay Weatherill is the best person for this work, he is the best person to lead this work," she said. But critics have argued the former South Australian premier, who oversaw the worst child protection failure in the state's history, is not the right fit. "How on earth can we have confidence that this review will deliver the outcomes that Victorian families need?" shadow education minister Jess Wilson asked. *Name has been changed for privacy Melbourne national Australia Victoria child sex abuse CONTACT US Property News: The suburbs where workers on $300,000 can't afford a house.
