Indian wrestled to ground, handcuffed, detained at Newark airport entered US illegally
An Indian national, whose detention at Newark airport in New Jersey was captured in a viral video, had illegally entered the United States (US) without a valid visa, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.
A non-resident Indian filmed the detention of the Indian youth at Newark airport and posted the video on social media on June 8. The video triggered a reaction in India as it showed the youth being wrestled to the ground and handcuffed by American security personnel.
The people cited above said on condition of anonymity that the individual shown being detained at Newark airport in the social media post had illegally entered the US without a valid visa. 'Our consulate in New York ascertained that the individual, who belongs to Haryana, entered the US without a valid visa and is being deported back to India in line with a court order,' one of the people said.
While the Indian youth was transiting through Newark airport, US authorities concluded that 'his behaviour was not conducive to travel' and he was restrained and admitted to a medical facility, the person said. 'Once he is fit to travel, the individual will be deported to India. Our consulate in New York continues to remain engaged with US authorities on this matter,' the person added.
The US embassy in New Delhi said in a social media post on Tuesday that the US will not 'tolerate illegal entry' or 'abuse of visas'. Without referring to any specific case, the embassy said that the US continues to welcome legitimate travellers. 'However, there is no right to visit the United States. We cannot and will not tolerate illegal entry, abuse of visas, or the violation of US law,' the embassy said.

1 Bangladeshi national, 1 Indian tout arrested in Tripura
The Government Railway Police (GRP) Monday informed that one Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout were arrested during two separate raids at the Agartala railway station in Tripura. In the first incident, a Bangladeshi national, identified as Pranajit Ray, 35, was arrested during a joint operation conducted by the Agartala GRP, Railway Protection Force (RPF), Border Security Force (BSF) and other sister agencies on Wednesday. During the preliminary interrogation, the investigators found that Ray, a resident of Sylhet district in Bangladesh, illegally entered Tripura and had planned to go to Kolkata from the Agartala railway station. 'We seized some documents and some Indian currency. We are examining these things,' said an officer. In a separate incident, an Indian human trafficker, a resident of Chanipur in West Tripura district, was also arrested during a joint operation conducted by security agencies. A GRP officer said the trafficker, identified as Debasish Malakar alias Debu, used to provide food and shelter to Bangladeshi nationals who entered Tripura illegally. 'He was absconding for a long time. We arrested him yesterday (Wednesday) and produced before court today (Friday),' he said. Several Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas have been arrested for entering Tripura illegally in recent months. As per a report of the Tripura Police, 816 Bangladeshi nationals, 79 Rohingya persons and two Nigerians were arrested in the state between January 1, 2024, and February 28 this year. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, recently informed that 2,815 Bangladeshi nationals were arrested for illegally crossing the Indo-Bangla border into Tripura from 2022 to October 31, 2024, out of which 1,746 have been pushed back to their country and 1,069 are housed in jail custody, temporary detention centres, shelter homes or are out on bail. Tripura shares 856 km of international border with Bangladesh, much of which is covered with barbed wire fence except a few patches that are still unfenced due to local disputes.

The song sparked a global craze and racked up millions of views on YouTube. The track even peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2021, police found the rapper shot in the leg and face outside a home in a suburban area near Decatur. Cops said that they found 10 bullet casings near Rook's body, and the security video from a nearby home showed a white BMW SUV speeding away shortly after the gunshots. A family member of Mr Rooks reportedly told officials that Silento had picked up Rooks in a white BMW SUV, and GPS data and other cameras put the vehicle at the site of the shooting. The rapper then confessed to the crime 10 days later after he was arrested. The bullet casings found at the scene matched the gun Silento had when he was arrested, officials said. The prior year, Silento was charged while living in Southern California for allegedly threatening two people with a hatchet. He had been on bail after a recent arrest. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Hawk "walked into an unlocked stranger's home" and attempted to strike the two people in the home with a hatchet before one of them managed to disarm him." In 2020, the rapper was also arrested after police said they clocked him driving 143 miles per hour (230 kilometres per hour) on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County.

Indian-American physician Dr Moa Ghosh (OB-GYN) who pleaded guilty last year to the fraud charges has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the $2.4 million medical fraud that she committed through her medical office. The 52-year-old submitted fraudulent claims to insurers for procedures which were not medically necessary, including endometrial ablations and biopsies, ultrasounds, vaccinations, laboratory blood tests, and tests for sexually transmitted diseases. The practice went on from 2018 to 2022. Ghosh inflated the length and complexity of in-office and telemedicine visits and submitted claims using billing codes for which the visits did not qualify in order to seek higher reimbursement rates. Ghosh prepared false patient medical records to support the fraudulent reimbursement claims. 'When physicians submit fraudulent claims to federal health care programs, they divert taxpayer-funded resources away from those who truly need them,' said US Attorney Boutros.
