US rapper Silento, best known for his hit song 'Watch Me Whip', has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his 34-year-old cousin, Frederick Rooks III, in 2021. According to the New York Post, the 27-year-old rapper, whose real name is Ricky Lamar Hawk, pleaded guilty but mentally ill Wednesday to four charges, including voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony crime, and concealing the death of his cousin. A murder charge was dropped as part of the plea agreement.
Voluntary manslaughter came with a 20-year prison sentence, while the firearm possession and concealment of death counts entail five years each. Hawk has been in jail since his February 2021 arrest, per the outlet.
Silento is an American rapper, singer and songwriter. He rose to fame in 2015 with his debut song 'Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)'. The song sparked a global craze and racked up millions of views on YouTube. The track even peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 2021, police found the rapper shot in the leg and face outside a home in a suburban area near Decatur. Cops said that they found 10 bullet casings near Rook's body, and the security video from a nearby home showed a white BMW SUV speeding away shortly after the gunshots. A family member of Mr Rooks reportedly told officials that Silento had picked up Rooks in a white BMW SUV, and GPS data and other cameras put the vehicle at the site of the shooting.
The rapper then confessed to the crime 10 days later after he was arrested. The bullet casings found at the scene matched the gun Silento had when he was arrested, officials said.
The prior year, Silento was charged while living in Southern California for allegedly threatening two people with a hatchet. He had been on bail after a recent arrest. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Hawk "walked into an unlocked stranger's home" and attempted to strike the two people in the home with a hatchet before one of them managed to disarm him."
In 2020, the rapper was also arrested after police said they clocked him driving 143 miles per hour (230 kilometres per hour) on Interstate 85 in DeKalb County.

Brazil's lower house approves law expanding social media protections for minors

Social media regulation has become a thorny political issue in the South American nation, with leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warning this week that 'society will be under constant threat without regulation of big tech' Brazil's lower house approved legislation on Wednesday expanding requirements for digital platforms to protect minors, after a prominent social media influencer allegedly sexually exploited a child. The measure includes stricter age verification systems and mandates that the accounts of children under 16 be linked to their parents' law takes effect one year after the president's assent and must receive final approval from the Senate. Social media regulation has become a thorny political issue in the South American nation, with leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva warning this week that 'society will be under constant threat without regulation of big tech.' Right-wing opposition parties have accused the government and judiciary of seeking to 'censor' online platforms. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The legislation was passed by a wide margin after public outrage over alleged child sexual exploitation by Hytalo Santos, a well-known influencer who posted content on Instagram featuring partially naked minors taking part in suggestive dances. Santos was arrested last week as part of an investigation into 'exposure with sexual connotations' to adolescents, and his Instagram account is no longer available. Steep fines Under the new rules, social networks must report suspected exploitative or sexually abusive content to Brazilian authorities and link the accounts of minors to parental controls. Platforms will be required to 'monitor and restrict, within the limits of their technical capabilities, content that is clearly intended to attract children,' according to the legislation. Brazil's Congress rejected self-declaration as an age verification method following expert recommendations, instead requiring social networks to 'continuously improve their age verification mechanisms.' Companies violating the provisions face fines up to 50 million reais ($9 million), suspensions, or bans for repeat offenders. Brazil has emerged as one of the world's most active countries in social media regulation. Courts suspended X for 40 days last year over non-compliance with anti-disinformation orders. The government on Monday asked US tech giant Meta to rid its platforms of chatbots that mimic children and can make sexually suggestive remarks, after detecting their 'proliferation' across Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In a June ruling, Brazil's Supreme Court ordered tech companies to assume greater responsibility for user-generated content. Early this year, the court ordered video platform Rumble to be suspended after it refused to block a Brazilian-American user's account.

‘Said he can find someone like Nora Fatehi, forced me to exercise for hours': Ghaziabad woman accuses husband of harassment

A 26-year-old woman has filed a harassment complaint against her husband and in-laws, alleging that she was body shamed and made to exercise for over three hours daily. She also said she was pregnant and her husband allegedly forced a miscarriage. She further accused her in-laws of harassing her for dowry. Police said the woman approached a Mahila Thana this week to file the complaint. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Ghaziabad, Dhawal Jaiswal, said an FIR has been registered against the woman's husband and her in-laws. According to the complaint, the woman got married on March 6. Her husband is a teacher at a government school. In her complaint to the police on August 14, the woman alleged that her husband was interested in other women and often watched objectionable photos and videos of them on Instagram and YouTube. 'He told me that his life was ruined because of me, and he could get an extremely beautiful woman who looked like (Bollywood actor) Nora Fatehi,' she alleged in her complaint. The woman further alleged in her complaint that her husband and in-laws forced her to work out for three hours daily — and if she failed to do so, they would keep her hungry for several days. 'It was an arranged marriage… My parents gifted jewellery worth Rs 16 lakh, a top variant Mahindra Scorpio worth Rs 24 lakh, and Rs 5 lakh in cash,' she said. Despite such expenses, she alleged she was harassed by her in-laws for more dowry, the complaint read. The woman also alleged that her husband gave her an abortion pill without her knowledge, forcing a miscarriage. 'Two months ago, I found out that I was pregnant. I shared this with my mother-in-law, who showed no interest. One day, my husband gave me a pill…,' she alleged in her complaint. After she fell sick, she said her in-laws dropped her off at her parents' house. When her health deteriorated, she was admitted to a hospital where doctors informed her about the miscarriage, she alleged in the complaint. Her in-laws allegedly did not allow her to enter their home after this. The woman claimed she later looked up the pill online and discovered it was for inducing an abortion.
