Completely Impossible ..., say analysts on claims that Donald Trump's T1 smartphone will be made in America; add: Where are ...

The Trump Organization says that the entire device, which costs $499 is assembled in the US, but there is no information on when it will hit stores. Earlier this week, the Trump Organization, owned by the US President Donald Trump, announced the launch of the T1, a gold-colored smartphone priced at $499. The smartphone, which will run on Google's Android operating system, is being promoted as 'built in the United States.' However, industry experts have cast doubt on these claims, suggesting the phone is likely designed and manufactured by a Chinese company. The announcement comes as President Trump has intensified scrutiny on global smartphone supply chains, particularly targeting companies like Apple to move manufacturing to the U.S. amid threats of tariffs on imported devices. Francisco Jeronimo, vice president at International Data Corp. told CNBC that it is 'completely impossible' for the T1 to be fully designed and manufactured in the U.S. He and other analysts, including Blake Przesmicki of Counterpoint Research, believe the phone is likely produced by a Chinese original device manufacturer (ODM), which designs and builds products to the specifications of other companies. Jeff Fieldhack, research director at Counterpoint, added that the U.S. lacks readily available local manufacturing capabilities for smartphones. Experts also warn that the US-based smartphone production would be a costly and time-intensive endeavor, likely increasing prices significantly. How and where to get the components The T1's specifications further highlight its reliance on global supply chains. The device features a 6.8-inch AMOLED display, likely sourced from South Korean companies Samsung or LG, or Chinese manufacturer BOE. Its 50-megapixel camera is expected to use image sensors from Japan's Sony, a dominant player in the market. The phone's processor is likely to come from Taiwan's MediaTek or Qualcomm, with manufacturing based in Taiwan. While US-based Micron could supply memory components, other suppliers like Samsung may also be involved. 'Even with local manufacturing, the T1 will rely on imported components,' Fieldhack noted, underscoring the global nature of smartphone production.

Can Donald Trump's $499 smartphone be made in the US?

The Trump Organization has claimed that the mobile, known as the T1, will be sold for $499 (Rs 42,000) starting in September. The firm has also claimed that the mobile will be 'designed and built in the United States'. But is this really possible? What do experts say? read more The Trump Organisation on Monday announced a new business venture – Trump Mobile. The mobile and cellphone service was unveiled at Trump Tower by US President Donald Trump's sons – Eric and Donald Trump Jr. The Trump Organisation has claimed that the mobile, known as the T1, will be sold for $499 (Rs 42,000). The firm has also claimed that the mobile will be 'designed and built in the United States'. But is this is really possible? STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Let's take a closer look The smartphone industry in America First let's take a brief look at the smartphone industry in the United States. The industry is one of the most competitive and difficult to break into in the world. Two behemoths, Apple and Samsung, loom large over the market in the United States. However, most of these phones that are sold by these two companies come from China, South Korea, South Korea, India and Vietnam. Just one company – Purism in California – makes phones in the US. Its 'Liberty phones' – cost $1,999 (Rs 2 lakh). Though its chassis is made in China, all of its other components – including the Operating System – are manufactured and assembled in the United States. What do we know about the phone? The Trump Organisation has already announced that the phone will run on an Android operating system. It has also announced a slew of features for the phone including a 6.8-inch AMOLED screen, a 16-megapixel selfie camera, a 50-megapixel main camera, 12 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of internal storage. However, some important points must be kept in mind. The phone, known as the T1, will run on the Google Android system. Image courtesy: Trump Mobile First, it must be noted that this is a licensing deal – like many other Trump-branded ventures. This means that those that run Trump Mobile are paying to use Trump's brand – essentially his name and likeness. The website for the phone has already stated that the Trump Organisation is not involved in designing and manufacturing the phone. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Trump Mobile, its products and services are not designed, developed, manufactured, distributed or sold by The Trump Organisation or any of their respective affiliates or principals,' a disclaimer on the website reads. Experts are sceptical whether this can actually be done. 'There is no way the phone was designed from scratch and there is no way it is going to be assembled in the US or completely manufactured in the US,' Francisco Jeronimo, vice president at International Data Corporation, told CNBC Tuesday. 'That is completely impossible.' 'They don't even have a working prototype. It's extremely unlikely,' added professor Tinglong Dai, who teaches operations management at Johns Hopkins' Carey Business School. 'You would have to have a miracle. You would need to have economies of scale. You would need to have sustainable demand for this kind of product,' Dai added. 'If the Trump Phone is promising a $499 price tag with domestic manufacturing, this announcement looks to be classic vapourware,' said Purism CEO Todd Weaver. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD They say that the US simply does not have the manufacturing capacity to do so. They add that the phone will likely be assembled in the US with parts being imported from abroad. Apple's basic phone, for example, costs $1,199 (Rs 1 lakh). With inputs from agenices
