Government names technical colleges to train 40,000 construction workers
It is hoped that they will help tens of thousands of builders, bricklayers, electricians, carpenters, and plumbers, many of whom are already in the industry, to get improved skills as ministers by 2029.
The plans are in addition to a separate target, announced in March, to train 60,000 construction workers. The Department for Education said the initiative was part of reducing its reliance on foreign labour.
A further 100,000 construction workers will be recruited by the Construction Skills Mission Board each year by the end of the Parliament.
The construction technical excellence colleges will be based in Derby College Group in the East Midlands, West Suffolk College in the east of England, New City College in Greater London, City of Sunderland College in north-east England, Wigan and Leigh College in north-west England, North Kent College in south-east England, Exeter College in south-west England, Bedford College which the Government said will be cross-regional, Dudley College of Technology in the West Midlands and Leeds College of Building – which will cover Yorkshire and the Humber.
Some are long-standing colleges, but will receive extra funding and support from the Government.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: 'We need skilled workers to deliver the homes, schools and hospitals that communities across the country are crying out for, and today's announcement underlines our commitment to the next generation of homegrown talent.
'Construction Technical Excellence Colleges will enable us to invest in people and give them the skills they need to break down barriers to opportunity.'
A recent Government survey found that the percentage of construction firms funding or offering training to their workers has fallen from 57% in 2011 to 49% in 2024.
David Hughes, chief executive of the Association of Colleges, said: 'Today's announcement is very positive news for people wanting good jobs, for the construction employers looking for skilled people and for the government's ambitions to build 1.5 million new homes.
'It represents significant investment and trust in the 10 successful colleges, and the college sector, recognising their crucial role in boosting the country's construction sector by opening up high quality learning opportunities all over the country.'
Tim Balcon, chief executive of the Construction Industry Training Board, said: 'It's wonderful to see the progress being made towards establishing these technical excellence colleges for construction.
'They represent a transformative opportunity for people to complete local vocational training, helping to drive regional growth and nurture the next generation of skilled construction workers in local communities.'
Shadow education minister Saqib Bhatti said: 'We welcome any investment into skills and training for British people, but this pledge rings hollow in the face of Labour's broken promises.
'What young people need are good and secure jobs, but thanks to Labour's jobs tax, jobs are being cut a record rates and unemployment is on the rise. Combined with Labour's cuts to Level 7 apprenticeships, this government is clearly not on the side our next generation.
'Only the Conservatives are on the side of Britain's makers – those who work hard, do the right thing and want to get on, and only we can be trusted to deliver the low tax, pro-growth economy that supports jobs for the future.'

Sir Keir Starmer has promised the Government's 'full backing' to get Sunderland's flagship Crown Works Studios project back on track. It emerged earlier this summer that the main private backer behind the £450 million film and TV studio development had pulled out. North East leaders are now pushing to find new investors to ensure that the huge regeneration, earmarked for the banks of the River Wear in Pallion, can go ahead. Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service on Tuesday, the Prime Minister pledged his support in the hunt for new investment that can deliver a project hailed as the biggest boost for the region since the arrival of Nissan. The Government has already put £25 million into the Crown Works plans, via the devolution deal which established the North East mayor last year, while the local authorities have committed to a total public investment of up to £120 million. Asked what support Downing Street had offered since Cain International's withdrawal from the Crown Works deal, Sir Keir said: 'Let me be really clear on this because I know it really matters – we really want to see this landmark project come to fruition. It is such a good project, good for jobs, good for growth. 'We announced £25 million of funding for the studios in the Autumn Statement to support filmmaking and economic growth, and we are working with the mayor [Kim McGuinness] very closely because we need to get private investors to get in behind this. 'I am determined that we will do everything we can to see this project come to fruition. It is really important locally, it is a huge thing, and we need to give it our full backing.' Global entertainment company Fulwell Entertainment, who were behind the Sunderland 'Til I Die Netflix series, had partnered with Cain on the joint venture to build 19 sound stages on the riverside plot. The firm has said it remains committed to working with Sunderland Council to find new funding for the filmmaking hub. It had been hoped that the scheme could create more than 8,000 jobs and Labour's new creative industries strategy specifically highlights the 'game-changing plans for film production in Sunderland'. Planning permission for the development was secured last year, but detailed approval has only been granted for a first phase of building that would include four sound stages, production offices, workshop buildings, and a multi-storey car park. City council leader Michael Mordey has previously said that he expects to have new funding secured by the time that land remediation works at the site are completed later this year.

John Swinney opens £26m Moray glasshouse to tackle climate change
Newton Tree Nursery near Elgin, Moray, first opened in 1931 and the new glasshouse aims to support Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) to almost treble its tree production – from seven million to nearly 20 million trees per year by 2029. The upgrade, funded with £20m from the Scottish Government and £6m from FLS, contributes to meeting the Government's woodland creation targets and will help support the sustainable management of national forests and land. The facility 'sets a new standard for bio-secure, sustainable, and high-volume forest nursery production', according to the Scottish Government, and it is also hoped it will boost the rural economy. It will ensure an adequate supply of high-quality trees is available to supply the publicly-managed forests of Scotland, with those forests supporting rural economies, providing flood mitigation, improving biodiversity and sequestering carbon. Mr Swinney said: 'Scotland's world-renowned forests and woodlands are a natural powerhouse, and one of the most important resources we have to tackle the climate emergency. 'Our investment in this state-of-the-art glasshouse will not only contribute to environmental sustainability and help to restore habitats, but it will also support rural jobs and the sustainable use of timber in the construction industry. 'The Newton Tree Nursery project is a national asset, powering Scotland's green recovery, forestry resilience, and environmental goals for decades to come. 'Tackling the climate emergency and growing Scotland's economy are two of my Government's top priorities and together they go hand in hand.
