Alexander Isak dealt fresh reality check as Liverpool transfer hits new hurdle
Alan Shearer insists Newcastle need two new strikers - not one - before they even consider letting Alexander Isak go as the player's hopes of moving to Liverpool continue to dwindle.
The Swede expressed a desire to explore his options away from St James' Park several weeks ago and the Reds came forward as a buyer. They saw their opening £110million bid swiftly rejected by the Magpies, who have missed out on a number of their summer targets.
In an effort to plug any gap that may have been left Newcastle went after Benjamin Sesko, only to see Manchester United swoop in and win the race for his signature. Yoane Wissa is also a target but Shearer has made it clear that Newcastle need two new frontmen.
The exit of Callum Wilson, who was allowed to leave the north east when his contract expired, means there is no back-up for Isak. That has led their record goalscorer to underline the need for two new strikers to come in.
He said on the BBC: "One way or another they have to resolve it, but that won't be easy. Isak clearly wants to leave St James' Park and join Liverpool, but he cannot be sold if they don't get anyone in to replace him.
"It's not just one new striker Newcastle need, either. Callum Wilson moved on earlier in the summer so the reality is that if they don't get two centre-forwards in, Isak does not go anywhere. That is still a possible scenario and, if he is still at Newcastle when the window closes at the start of September, things get interesting because he will want to play - he could be playing for his World Cup place with Sweden at next summer's finals."
Isak is currently not allowed to train with the first-team squad as Eddie Howe and the club take a firm stance over the player's future. Newcastle begin their Premier League season at Aston Villa with their manager admitting he is unlikely to feature due to the current state of affairs.
Shearer claims that the major deals to have taken place in the top flight have set a precedent when it comes to figures. Several midfielders have moved for the £100m mark - making Isak notably more valuable in today's market.
He added: "In recent years we have seen Enzo Fernandez, Declan Rice and Jack Grealish go for around £100m so, if that is the bar, they are never going to get Isak - a 25-year-old striker who has scored 44 Premier League goals across the past two seasons - for £110m."

Liverpool closing in on £26m deal to sign 18-year-old Parma defender Giovanni Leoni as Arne Slot seeks defensive reinforcements
Liverpool are finalising agreement on a £26million deal for Parma defender Giovanni Leoni. The Reds will pay further add-ons for the 18-year old on performances plus a sell-on percentage. Daily Mail Sport reported on Tuesday that the Premier League champions had stepped up their interest in the defender. The deal unconnected to Liverpool's pursuit of Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi for a similar fee. The Italy U19 has only played 17 times in Serie A but the Reds transfer department are understood to like Leoni a lot and are ready to pursue a move to sign him. Liverpool's interest in Leoni, a 6ft 5in central defender, comes after the Reds previously pursued Lenny Yoro, Jorrel Hato and Dean Huijsen as they seek a long-term successor to captain Virgil van Dijk.

‘Someone needs to give Carabao a geography lesson' – Fans spot major issue with cup draw as others fume ‘so rigged'
FANS have labelled the Carabao Cup draw as "rigged" and are demanding that chiefs get a "geography lesson". The 11 Premier League teams not competing in Europe this season enter the tournament at the second round stage. 2 2 Tonight's draw saw Manchester United get an away trip to League Two side Grimsby Town. And there were two all-Prem ties as Bournemouth host Brentford and West Ham travel to Wolves. But Hammers fans have been left perplexed about their away day at Molineux. The draw saw the nation split into two halves, with a 24-team northern and a 22-team southern section. Both Wolves and West Ham were put in the southern side of the competition. And that is despite Birmingham City, who face Sheffield United tonight, being located further south than Wolverhampton. A drive from St Andrews' to Molineux will take you 23 miles north. The issue baffled supporters, who said: "Which genius put Birmingham in the northern section of the Carabao Cup draw and Wolverhampton in the south?" Another added: "Someone needs to give Carabao a geography lesson!" A third commented: "Wolves in the southern section and Birmingham in the northern section of this draw is frying my brain." Carabao Cup introduces popular new feature on 24 teams' shirts as Arsenal are brutally trolled Others complained about Man Utd 's "easy" draw, with one saying: "Looks so rigged. Only one or two games which have teams more than one league apart." A second wrote: "It's rigged." More conspiracy theorist added: "Unlike United to get another easy draw in an early round. Shock horror bet that weren't fixed." Second round ties will be played the week commencing August 25.

Giovanni Leoni: Liverpool closing in on £26m deal for defender
Liverpool are closing in on a £26million deal for Parma's teenage centre back Giovanni Leoni, who will go straight into the first team set-up. Leoni, 18, has emerged as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe and Liverpool are poised to beat Italian clubs Inter Milan and AC Milan in the race to secure his signing. It is understood that Premier League sides, including Manchester United and Newcastle United, also showed late interest in the player, who has previously said Virgil van Dijk is his inspiration. Provided that there are no late hitches, he will now have the opportunity to learn alongside the Liverpool captain, with Leoni effectively replacing Jarell Quansah, who was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35million, in head coach Arne Slot's squad.
