Gotterup shoots 65
The second round of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush saw world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler grab the lead with Matt Fitzpatrick one shot back.
Scheffler finished Friday at 10-under after he added a brilliant round of 64 to his opening 68, while Fitzpatrick has now shot scores of 67 and 66.
Former champion Brian Harman and Haotong Li are two shots back, with Harman going round in 65 today, while Li shot a 67.
Local favorite Rory McIlroy (-3) is still in the mix after shooting a 2-under 69, with 33 players under par heading into the weekend. Share your views: live@theathletic.com

Gotterup -5, Westwood -3, Detry +1 (F)
Chris Gotterup continues to play stellar links golf across the pond. After a 1-over 72 first round, the American responded with a stellar 65 today. It matches the low round of the day set earlier by Brian Harman.
Gotterup had two eagles, three birdies and one bogey on his card. He is currently five off the lead.
Lee Westwood, who had to qualify for this year's Open (his 92nd major appearance), sank a 27-footer from off the green to save par, shooting a second-round 70. Thomas Detry is in the clubhouse at even, currently 1 over for the tournament. Getty Images
The rain has arrived at Royal Portrush. And it's pouring in droves at the moment.
Golfers are wearing full rain gear. They are constantly cleaning the grips of their clubs so they don't slip. The umbrellas are trying to protect the clubs, players and caddies but they can only do so much.
Challenging conditions right now. This is links golf! Getty Images
You aren't dreaming if you are watching the NBC/Golf Channel broadcast right now. The camera went to the lead broadcast booth of Dan Hicks and Kevin Kisner.
Mike Tirico described that a bat flew into the booth. Yes, a bat. Hicks and Kisner were seen trying to protect themselves, waving the bat away.
While the bat did not make its way onto the screen, it did provide a moment of levity as the rain is POURING at Royal Portrush right now. Getty Images
Scheffler -8, Lowry -2, Morikawa +7 (10)
No surprise here, Scottie Scheffler's iron play has been stellar. He's looking at another 10-footer for birdie to start the back 9. He converts and his progression up the leaderboard continues.
Shane Lowry has earned himself a long birdie look but ends up two-putting for par, and Collin Morikawa continues to struggle, needing to make a long putt here to save par. He does not. Getty Images
Fitzpatrick -10, Matsuyama +1, Fox +3 (13)
Matt Fitzpatrick cannot be stopped. That's FOUR straight birdies to start the back nine.
Since his bogey at No. 8, the Englishman is 4 under through his last five holes. At the tricky par-3 13th, Fitzpatrick landed his 196-yard tee shot 6 feet from the pin. He sank the birdie putt and now leads by two.
What a stretch of golf! Getty Images
Herbert +4, Clarke +6, Riley +9 (F)
What scenes at the 18th hole at Royal Portrush as Northern Irishman Darren Clarke walks up to a raucous applause from the gallery. Clarke won the Open Championship at Royal St. George's in 2011, becoming the first Northern Irishman to win the Claret Jug.
He shot a second-round 73, which means he will miss the cut. But for golf fans, especially those from Northern Ireland, they were treated to Clarke's arsenal of shots and charming personality. Even on the 18th, he showcased his finesse short game with a 24-yard chip, a proper links golf shot.
At 56, Clarke likely won't play the Open the next time it is staged at Portrush. The Open was by far his best major, with three top 10s (including a T2) in addition to his victory at Royal St. George's.
Scheffler -7, Lowry -2, Morikawa +6 (9)
Scottie Scheffler follows up a pristine drive with a respectable iron shot that might leave a bit to be desired. He has 11 feet for birdie, but he's on the fringe.
It turns out he did leave a bit too much there, two-putting for par. Getty Images
Haotong Li finishes up his second straight 4-under-par 67, this one with just one bogey (his only bogey of the tournament. He is tied for the clubhouse lead with Brian Harman.
Li will make the cut at the Open Championship for the third time in his sixth appearance. Getty Images
Scheffler -7, Lowry -2, Morikawa +6 (8)
Quite the drive from Scottie Scheffler on 9, hitting his drive nearly 350 yards to leave just 87 yards to the pin. Getty Images
Scheffler -7, Lowry -2, Morikawa +6 (8)
Another birdie opportunity has presented itself for Scottie Scheffler here, this time from about 22 feet away. He's unable to make it four straight birdies, but he takes the par.
Shane Lowry again misses another birdie putt. That one was not his best, but he taps in for par. Collin Morikawa struggles on 8, recording a brutal double-bogey that he really could not afford. Getty Images
Scheffler -7, Lowry -2, Morikawa +4 (7)
Scottie Scheffler had an uneven lie there, which may have impacted the result of that chip. He still has a good look for birdie, but he'll need to earn it.
Collin Morikawa gets a hard-earned par, Scheffler drills his birdie putt, and Shane Lowry misses a 7-footer for birdie before tapping in for par. Getty Images
Scheffler -6, Lowry -2, Morikawa +4 (6)
Strong effort from Scottie Scheffler there. He does not quite find the green, but he is 15 yards from the pin, where a relatively straightforward up and down would secure a birdie. Getty Images
Rahm -3, Schauffele -1, Spaun E (7)
Jon Rahm isn't going away in this Open Championship. One of the favorites entering the tournament, the Spaniard holed a 5-footer for birdie at the par-5 7th. It was a perfectly played hole for Rahm, who found the fairway after his 335-yard tee shot and found the putting surface on his 251-yard approach.
Rahm is currently five off the lead. Meanwhile, Rahm's playing partners, Xander Schauffele and J.J. Spaun, also carded birdies at the seventh.
Scheffler -6, Lowry -2, Morikawa +4 (6)
Scottie Scheffler's drive finds the rough along the right side of the fairway, Collin Morikawa lands in the rough on the right too, and Shane Lowry smacks a shot right down the middle. Getty Images
Nicolai Højgaard -4, McKibbin +3, Harrington +9 (F)
A solid round for Nicolai Højgaard, shooting a 2-under 69. The Danish golfer had five birdies to three bogeys on his card.
Nicolai is one back of his twin brother Rasmus, who shot a 3-under 68 to move to 5-under-par for the tournament. Perhaps a Højgaard pairing at some point this weekend? One can dream.
Meanwhile, three-time major winner Padraig Harrington got a roaring applause walking up the 18th, before shooting a second-round 76. Getty Images
Li -8, Dustin Johnson +2 (14)
Haotong Li records the first bogey of his Open Championship. Landing in the rough off the tee did not help Li whatsoever.
His third shot, which was short of the green, didn't even get to the hole, staying on the fringe. He missed the lengthy par putt, resulting in a bogey.
Li moves back to 8 under, now tied with Brian Harman for the lead.
Scheffler -6, Lowry -2, Morikawa +4 (6)
Thirty-four feet? No worries for Scottie Scheffler. His putt catches the lip but still drops, and the world No. 1 is now moving up the leaderboard in a hurry.
Shane Lowry does well to two-putt for par, and Collin Morikawa matches Scheffler with a strong birdie putt of his own.
Scheffler -5, Lowry -2, Morikawa +5 (5)
That is a tough pin placement on the sixth. Scottie Scheffler plays it safe and lands well beyond the pin, as does Shane Lowry.
Collin Morikawa took a similar path but ended up with the best shot of the three, still requiring almost 30 feet for birdie. Getty Images
Li -9, Dustin Johnson +2 (13)
Haotong Li in trouble on a hole? Never thought I'd see it in this round, given the level he's playing at.
But the solo leader landed his 277-yard tee shot in the deep rough on the right at the par-4 14th. After hacking it out of the rough, Li's approach landed short of the green. He used a lofted club to try to get the ball out of the rough.
He did that, but now faces a tricky up and down to save par.

Madrid's reduced valuation puts Liverpool on alert
Rodrygo Back on Liverpool's Radar as Real Madrid Drop Price Tag As Liverpool's pre-season tour rolls through Asia, much of the club's intrigue lies away from the pitch. While the 4-2 loss to AC Milan generated some talking points, the real focus remains on Arne Slot's evolving squad and how Liverpool may respond to the looming exits of key attacking figures. Photo: IMAGO With Luis Diaz reportedly close to sealing a move to Bayern Munich and Darwin Nunez expected to follow him through the exit door, the club's attacking options are under scrutiny. Eyes have naturally turned to potential replacements, and one familiar name has returned to the conversation: Rodrygo. Madrid stance opens door for movement According to the Echo AS, Real Madrid are prepared to lower their valuation of the Brazilian winger. Previously holding firm at £80 million, the Spanish giants are now said to be open to negotiating a lower fee to help facilitate Rodrygo's departure. This shift has reportedly alerted several European clubs, including Liverpool, who have a long-standing interest in the player. Photo: IMAGO Rodrygo's situation in Madrid has become increasingly uncertain. The 24-year-old was handed a limited role during the Club World Cup and is reportedly not in Xabi Alonso's plans moving forward. This potential availability presents an opportunity that Liverpool may find hard to ignore. Rodrygo link not new to Anfield Liverpool were close to securing Rodrygo's services before he moved to Spain in 2019. That admiration has lingered. While no formal offer has been made yet, the combination of reduced cost and the player's technical fit for Liverpool's system could make him an attractive option in the post-Diaz era. Photo: IMAGO Rodrygo's versatility, work rate and experience at the elite level match the profile Liverpool tend to favour. The Echo notes that, while Liverpool's interest is yet to be defined as concrete, the shift in Madrid's stance could trigger movement, especially if further funds are generated through outgoing transfers. Slot's attack could use fresh spark With Arne Slot placing emphasis on fluid attacking transitions and intelligent movement in the final third, a player of Rodrygo's profile could be a valuable asset. He has shown at Real Madrid that he can play across the front three, maintain width or tuck inside, and press aggressively from the front all traits that would fit the Dutchman's vision for Liverpool. Photo IMAGO Transfer decisions gathering pace Much of Liverpool's transfer strategy this summer has been about timing. Patience has been key as they wait to navigate a market increasingly driven by inflated valuations and tight FFP margins. But if Rodrygo truly is on the market at a reduced price, Liverpool may look to strike, particularly if they find themselves with a shortfall of wide options come August. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis Rodrygo is no speculative gamble. He has Champions League pedigree, La Liga experience, and is entering his peak years. If Real Madrid are genuinely lowering their asking price, Liverpool would be foolish not to make serious enquiries. With Diaz's departure reportedly agreed and Nunez's future hanging in the balance, a wide forward of Rodrygo's class would inject real excitement into the rebuild under Slot. There are still questions. Can he adapt quickly to the demands of English football? Would he accept a role in a system that asks more of its wide players off the ball? But in terms of potential and proven quality, Rodrygo ticks more boxes than most. This deal, if it happens, would be a statement that Liverpool are not just looking to replace, they are looking to evolve. And with the clock ticking down to the new season, a move of this calibre could be the catalyst for a thrilling new chapter at Anfield.

Lionesses raise a glass to their Euros victory ahead of London parade
The Lionesses have celebrated their historic Euros victory by raising a glass and dancing with a dog that has joined them on tour, ahead of a London parade and trip to Downing Street. England fans erupted with joy across the country as the team defended their Euros title in a penalty shootout win over Spain in the final in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday. Chloe Kelly scored the winning spot-kick following two huge saves from goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, sending supporters in fan zones into raptures. On Monday, the team are expected to land back in the UK before heading to a reception at Downing Street hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and sports minister Stephanie Peacock. In a post on X, an FA spokesperson advised fans not to travel to the airport where the Lionesses will touch down because of 'limited space'. Instead, the FA urged supporters to join the homecoming celebrations in central London on Tuesday, including an open-top bus procession along The Mall and a ceremony in front of Buckingham Palace. However, the Lionesses have already begun their celebrations and can be seen cheering, raising a glass and dancing with Reggie, the dog, in a video posted on the team's official social media accounts. The team can be seen wearing their gold medals, chanting the white Cavapoo's name and waving his paw after the match. Reggie belongs to Cheals on Wheels, a barista company that travelled with the team to the tournament. Posting on Instagram, the company wrote that Reggie had 'gone international' and was 'soaking up all the love (and sneaky treats) from the team' in Switzerland. They added he was 'always the star of the show wherever he goes — even on tour'. Other posts from the barista show Reggie enjoying cuddles with England manager Sarina Wiegman and former England player Jill Scott. Videos from the Lioness' accounts show the jubilant team running across the pitch and cheering as they roll around in gold and silver streamers and confetti. After the game, the King said the team had the royal family's 'warmest appreciation and admiration' in a post on X, adding: 'The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can'. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hailed the team's triumph, saying: 'The Lionesses have once again captured the hearts of the nation. 'Their victory is not only a remarkable sporting achievement, but an inspiration for young people across the country.' Supporters stood on tables, waved flags, threw drinks in the air and excitedly hugged each other as England claimed victory, while the Prince of Wales and Sir Keir watched on from the stands in Basel. Alessia Russo gave the Lionesses hope of retaining their Euros title with her second-half equaliser after Mariona Caldentey netted the opener for Spain in the 25th minute. A picture of the Prince of Wales with his arm around his daughter Princess Charlotte was posted to X following the presentation of the trophy, with the caption 'champions of Europe'. The pair congratulated the team in a short statement, saying: 'What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn't be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England.' The statement was the first message Charlotte has personally signed on the Prince and Princess of Wales's X account. William was spotted in the stands applauding and celebrating with those around him – including Princess Charlotte. As the presentation ceremony took place, the Prince of Wales was among those to congratulate star striker Michelle Agyemang on being named young player of the tournament, appearing to say 'well played, fantastic, well done'. Agyemang, 19, who had one England cap before the tournament, scored crucial equalisers in the Lionesses' quarter-final and semi-final comebacks. There was non-stop applause in her home town of South Ockendon, Essex, as fans saw the Arsenal forward step through a guard of honour to pick up her award. Supporters at her old club Brandon Groves AFC danced a conga line to the sounds of Vindaloo after England's victory. The club's vice-chairwoman, Paula Howes, said Agyemang will help give youngsters the 'motivation and drive' to progress from grassroots football to the top of the game. The National Autistic Society congratulated their ambassador Lucy Bronze on the Lionesses' victory, adding: 'We hope she has inspired the next generation of autistic girls to follow their dreams.' Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy also gave her reaction to the win, saying: 'What an absolutely extraordinary achievement by our Lionesses – once again they have made history and united the country with pride and joy.' England's path to this year's final was marked by late drama. They sealed their spot with a last-gasp extra-time win over Italy, following a penalty shootout victory against Sweden in the quarter-finals after nearly crashing out in extra time. Fans can attend the homecoming celebrations in London for free and it will be broadcast live on BBC, ITV, and Sky. It is understood Downing Street has no plans for a bank holiday to mark the Lionesses' triumph.

Chelsea's Mike Penders joins Strasbourg on loan
Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders has joined sister club Strasbourg on loan for the season. The Athletic reported on July 22 that Penders was set to join Strasbourg, alongside defender Mamadou Sarr, who arrived at Chelsea from the French side earlier this summer. The Premier League side agreed a deal in advance to sign Penders from Genk last summer, with the 19-year-old joining up with his new side ahead of the Club World Cup campaign in the United States. He did not play a minute, acting as third choice behind Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen. Penders is expected to become Strasbourg's No 1 for the 2025-26 campaign, effectively replacing Djordje Petrovic, who spent last season on loan with Liam Rosenior's side from Chelsea before joining Bournemouth permanently earlier this month. Penders, who stands at 6ft 7in (200cm), began last season as first choice for the Genk Under-21s, who play in the Belgian second tier, before becoming the first-team goalkeeper in January. He ended the season with 25 first-team appearances. The Belgian has also represented his country at youth level, playing up to under-19s. Advertisement Strasbourg are also controlled by BlueCo, the holding company which owns Chelsea. FIFA rules permit only three players be loaned between clubs with such arrangements. Rosenior's side will play Conference League football next season after finishing seventh in 2024-25. Petrovic was voted as their player of the season after keeping 10 clean sheets in 31 Ligue 1 appearances.
