Remains of 5,000-year-old high-society woman, prestigious offerings discovered in Peru

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered the remains of a woman from an ancient civilization.
The discovery was made within an archaeological site known as Áspero, an ancient fishing town during the Caral civilization, which existed 3,800-5,000 years ago from 3000-1800 BC.
Peru's Ministry of Culture announced the discovery on Thursday.
The woman's body was exceptionally preserved, with hair, skin and nails still visibile. The ministry said usually only skeletal remains are found in this area.

She was estimated to be between 20-35 years old at the time of her death.
The ministry said the woman's body was wrapped in cotton fabrics, rush mats and other materials, as well as a panel embroidered with macaw feathers, arranged delicately in a net, on bundles of plant fibers.
A headdress made of fibers with bundles of twisted threads was placed on top of the woman's remains, the ministry said.
Some of the prestigious offerings found within the lower space of the woman's burial site include:
Four reed baskets
A needle with incised designs
An Amazonian snail shell
A toucan's beak inlaid with green and brown beads
A wool textile
A fishing net
About 30 sweet potatoes and weaving tools
Dozens Of Bottles Of Cherries Found By Archeologists At The Home Of The United States' First President
The ministry said all the items, along with the treatment of the remains, indicate that the woman was of a high social status at the time of her death.
The embroidered panel of macaw feathers is one of the oldest examples of art found in the Andes.
Specialists highlight this discovery as an indicator of the high level of development of specialized techniques during the Caral Civilization, the ministry said.
The ministry said a team is investigating aspects related to the woman's health, death and diet, as well as the origin and use of the objects found with her remains.
This discovery is similar to other elite burials found in Áspero in 2016 and 2019, the ministry said.Original article source: Remains of 5,000-year-old high-society woman, prestigious offerings discovered in Peru

Lost and found: Peru unveils sacred city of Caral hidden for nearly 4,000 years

The site of Caral, one of Peru's most important archaeological areas, has a new jewel in its crown after eight years of excavations, intense research and conservation work. It is called Peñico, and experts consider it to be a "city of social integration" because of its strategic location, which connected the populations of the Supe and Huaura valleys, but also because of the large number of homes, public buildings and ceremonial spaces it housed. On Saturday 12 July, the Caral Archaeological Zone will organise the first Peñico Raymi, a replica of a traditional Andean festival, to inaugurate the new archaeological site. Although the Caral culture developed mainly between 3000 and 1800 BC (which, given its antiquity, places it in a society with a development and chronology comparable to Ancient Egypt), it's understood the city of Peñico began to develop a little later, around 1800 and 1500 BC. The Caral are considered the oldest of the pre-Hispanic civilisations in the Americans, which went into steep decline around 1800 BC. It is possible that the prestige achieved by Peñico society in the valley, coupled with its role as a hub in the exchange network, was linked to the extraction and circulation of hematite. This mineral, used to make a red pigment, had great symbolic importance within Andean cosmology. Among the 18 constructions discovered during the excavations and now on display to the public, a ceremonial hall stands out: "We don't know its exact limits," explained Mauro Ordóñez, head of the Penico archaeological site. "This building continues to extend from east to west. The most interesting thing is the composition of several antechambers: one of them stands out for having on its sides the representation, in friezes, of pututus". Pututus are objects also known as churus (the Quechua word for a mollusc, shell or snail). They are wind instruments originally made from a seashell that was large enough to emit a powerful sound. Ordóñez considers this to be evidence of close relations with other pre-Columbian groups in northern Peru. The sacred city of Caral-Supe, located less than 200 kilometres north of Lima, the Peruvian capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Peñico, in particular, was built 600 metres above sea level on a geological terrace parallel to the Supe River and surrounded by hills that reach a height of 1,000 metres. Its Caralan builders chose this strategic location for multiple purposes: to enhance the monumentality of their buildings, to protect themselves from floods or landslides and, as evidenced by findings such as the representation of musical instruments, and to promote interaction and exchange with other civilisations.

Archaeologists Dug up a 3,500-Year-Old Lost City from the Americas' Oldest Civilization

Here's what you'll learn when you read this story: Archaeologists just unveiled the remains of a 3,500 year old city in Peru. After eight years of research, experts have unearthed 18 structures so far, including residential homes and ceremonial temples. Experts believe the city—since named Peñico—was once a thriving urban center optimized for trade with a connection to the Americas' oldest civilization. After eight long years of excavation and research, archaeologists finally unveiled a 3,500 year old city in Peru. Located in the Lima region, the city has since been named 'Peñico,' meaning the city of social integration. Experts believe that the city's builders strategically selected the location to facilitate trade between the coast, the highlands, and the jungle. 'This urban center developed following the cultural tradition of Caral,' Ruth Shady, director of the Caral Archeological Zone (ZAC), explained in a translated press release, referencing the Caral civilization, the oldest known civilization in the Americas. 'Due to its strategic location, it connected settlements on the coast and in the Supe and Huaura mountains, as well as those living in the Andean-Amazonian territory and the high Andean region.' The city sits nearly half of a mile above sea level and is surrounded by hills. According to experts, this would have optimized its monumentality, protected against disasters like flooding and mudslides, and promoted social interaction. Researchers believe that the urban area was established around 1800 B.C., 1,200 years after the Caral civilization was established around 3000 B.C. According to the BBC, Shady noted that climate change had devastated the ancient civilization, and Peñico was likely a continuation of Caral, since the former emerged in the same area soon after the latter's decline. Aerial images of Peñico show off the stone and mud ruins of the once-prosperous city. So far, archaeologists have discovered 18 structures at the site, perhaps the most notable of which is a building known as B2. Part of the large central plaza, the section (according to the press release) stands out for its impressive structural reliefs and designs, including the depiction of 'pututus'—conch shell trumpets that were an integral part of Andean society, and were used both during rituals and to convene meetings and make announcements. The artifacts recovered from the public building were just as notable as the building itself. Jewelry, tools, figurines, and ceremonial objects were all discovered at the site, according to the press release. Evidence suggests that the B2 building would have been a center for administrative and ideological gatherings, meaning that it was likely the most important building in the city (though archeologists also uncovered other residential and ceremonial buildings). Experts believe that the prosperity of Peñico could have been thanks to locals' use of hematite—a mineral that was important to Andean society, and often used to make red pigment for activities like pottery painting. According to the release, experts at the site think that inhabitants of the ancient city may have extracted and circulated the resource, making it a key part of the trade network in the Supe Valley. The discoveries at Peñico will not only enrich scholars' understanding of the Supe Valley, but will serve as a tool for public education. At the Ministry of Culture's press conference, Shady announced that Peñico is now one of the publicly-accessible archaeological sites managed by the ZAC. The ZAC also organized the first Peñico Raymi festival, which is scheduled for July 12. There, guests will be able to wander around an arts festival, celebrate local cultural heritage, and pay tribute to Pachamama (Mother Earth).
