AI system rolled out to boost rail safety and maintenance
Patna: Danapur division of East Central Railway (ECR) has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based system to improve safety and streamline coach maintenance. Recently implemented at the Ara coaching depot, the system is already showing promising results by improving precision, efficiency and safety in maintenance operations, according to Danapur divisional railway manager (DRM) Jayant Kumar Choudhary. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "This AI system is capable of detecting anomalies that may not be visible to the naked eye. It helps us identify potential fire hazards, malfunctioning components and other safety-related issues in advance, thereby preventing possible accidents and delays," said Choudhary. He added that most passenger trains originating from Ara station have now been equipped with the new technology. The AI technology has improved the detection and diagnosis of issues related to air conditioning panels, fire safety systems, hot axles, brake binding and alarm chain pulling (ACP). Choudhary said the system not only improves operational safety but also cuts down the time needed for routine inspections and repairs. Danapur ADRM Aadar Raj, who played a key role in developing the device, said the AI model was built in-house by Danapur engineers and IT experts. He said the system uses sensor data, pattern recognition and predictive analytics to identify risks early, allowing maintenance teams to take preventive action. The initiative has been well received by staff at the Ara depot, who observed improved accuracy and a reduction in manual workload. Raj said the pilot project is expected to serve as a model for other coaching depots within the ECR zone and potentially across Indian Railways. He added that the system alerts on-duty staff with a buzzer sound in the event of ACP incidents, further improving response times. "In view of rising demands for safer and more reliable train travel, such innovations signal a shift towards data-driven operations in one of the world's largest rail networks," Raj said, adding that the integration of AI into railway maintenance marks a major step forward for public transport in India.
