Cardinals place outfielder Victor Scott II on 10-day IL with left ankle sprain
ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals placed outfielder Victor Scott II on the 10-day injured list before Sunday's series finale against the New York Yankees. Scott had an MRI and it revealed he has a left ankle sprain. He collided with the outfield wall in pursuit of Aaron Judge's home run in the third inning of Saturday's game, a 12-8 Yankees victory. Outfielder Nathan Church and left-handed pitcher Anthony Veneziano have been selected from Triple-A Memphis. Right-handed pitcher Roddery Muñoz was optioned to Memphis. Church will start in center and hit ninth. Scott was hurt when he was trying to rob Judge of a home run. Scott almost brought back the Yankees slugger's first career home run against the Cardinals after going high above the center-field wall with his glove. He landed awkwardly on his left ankle. Scott has played in 116 games this season. He is hitting .223 with five home runs and 35 RBIs. Scott has 31 stolen bases. Two starters also remain out of the St. Louis lineup — first baseman Willson Contreras (right foot contusion) and second baseman Brendan Donovan (left foot/groin soreness). Contreras was hit by a pitch on the foot Tuesday and hasn't played since. Alec Burleson has started each of St. Louis' four games at first base since Contreras has been sidelined. Donovan has been dealing with leg and foot injuries since being removed from a game against Toronto on June 10 with a sprained capsule in his left big toe. Philadelphia Phillies' RHP Aaron Nola allows 6 runs in 2 1/3 innings in his return from the injured list
Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola's first start after returning from the injured list didn't last long. The right-hander allowed six runs in 2 1/3 innings Sunday against the Washington Nationals, a start that ended when seven consecutive batters reached safely. Nola struck out four in his first major league outing since May 14. The former All-Star was one of the majors' most durable pitchers entering the season, making at least 32 starts and throwing at least 180 2/3 innings in each of the last six full seasons. But a sprained right ankle and fractured rib cost him three months this season. His return became even more significant Saturday when Philadelphia placed ace Zack Wheeler on the injured list with a blood clot in his right arm. Nola was already scheduled to start after making three minor league rehabilitation appearances, though the Phillies scrapped their plans to use a six-man rotation. Nola gave up Luis García Jr.'s leadoff single in the first inning, then appeared to settle in. He retired the next seven batters as Philadelphia built a 6-0 lead. The Nationals stitched together three consecutive singles in the third, the last by CJ Abrams to score a run. That led to a mound visit from pitching coach Caleb Cotham, but Nola then walked Paul DeJong before giving up Daylen Lile's two-run single and Dylan Crews' two-run double. José Tena followed with a tying double to end Nola's day. Nola allowed seven hits while throwing 53 pitches. His ERA rose to 6.92. In addition to Nola taking Wheeler's roster spot, the Phillies activated third baseman Alec Bohm from the injured list and optioned infielder Otto Kemp to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. To make room on the 40-man roster for Nola, Philadelphia released outfielder Cal Stevenson.

Alabama's Jam Miller expected to miss season opener vs. FSU with upper-body injury
Alabama starting tailback Jam Miller is out indefinitely after suffering an upper-body injury in Saturday's scrimmage. Miller's exact injury was not specified by Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer, who said in a statement Sunday that Miller had a 'procedure' the night before. 'Jam should recover fully with a timetable for his return yet to be determined,' DeBoer said. Advertisement Miller, a senior, was preseason third-team All-SEC after being Alabama's second-leading rusher last season with 668 yards and seven touchdowns. Then-quarterback Jalen Milroe was Alabama's leading rusher. At minimum, Miller appears out for No. 8 Alabama's season opener at unranked Florida State. But he could be facing an extended absence, putting his availability in peril for the Sept. 13 home game against unranked Wisconsin and the Sept. 27 trip to No. 5 Georgia. Miller could be a big loss for the Crimson Tide for however long he's out. He split time last season with Justice Haynes, who then transferred to Michigan, so Miller was expected to have a much bigger role. (He also had 16 catches for 155 yards last year.) Otherwise, Alabama doesn't have a lot of SEC experience in the backfield. But there is potential in redshirt sophomore Richard Young, a 2023 top-100 prospect, who suffered a leg injury in Week 3 last year that caused him to miss the next four games. When he returned, Young didn't have a big role, finishing with 146 yards. Sophomore Daniel Hill (61 rushing yards) generated some optimism this spring, and Dre Washington, a transfer from Louisiana, rushed for 1,343 yards over the past three seasons in the Sun Belt.
