WCM-Q researchers probe links between insulin resistance and colorectal cancer

Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have explored the possible links between insulin resistance and early-onset colorectal cancer (EOCRC) in a new article published in Cancer Cell (Cell Press), a leading scientific journal.
Cancer, regardless of type, is generally considered a disease that occurs later in life, typically after 50-60 years of age. Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), USA, indicates that the median age of a cancer diagnosis is 66. However, more recently, younger individuals under the age of 45-50 have been diagnosed with cancers (early-onset cancers; EOCs).
Although this shifting trend in cancer epidemiology has been reported previously, this occurrence gained significant attention in early 2024, with many major news outlets and research/medical institutions reporting a rise in EOCs. Among the various EOCs, gastrointestinal cancers, particularly colorectal cancer (CRC), seem to be rapidly increasing among the younger population. This trend appears similar for countries in the MENA region, including Qatar.
"As cancer researchers, we were captivated by the question of 'why this is happening?'" said Prof. Dr. Dietrich Büsselberg, professor of physiology and biophysics, one of the co-corresponding authors of the article. "It is well known that genetic mutations that cause CRC and hereditary CRC-associated syndromes are highly penetrant and increase the risk of CRC. However, it is unlikely that this risk factor alone has changed so dramatically in successive generations of the population to account for the significant increase in EOCRC in recent years.
Dr. Samson Mathews Samuel, research associate in physiology and biophysics and co-corresponding author of the article, said: 'Our in-depth review of existing literature led us to identify a possible culprit behind this occurrence, namely insulin resistance. Our study, therefore, examined the mechanisms through which insulin resistance may facilitate the development of colorectal cancer, particularly in younger populations.'
A growing body of evidence points to insulin resistance, a hallmark of common metabolic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, as a possible key risk factor contributing to the incidence and progression of EOCRC. Insulin resistance, defined as the inability of cells to respond to normal insulin, results in hyperinsulinemia (an increase in circulating insulin levels in the blood) much earlier in life than is typically recognized. This is because the possible early signs of insulin resistance usually go unnoticed, and blood tests for insulin resistance are not commonly done as a routine screening measure unless obesity, pre-diabetes/diabetes, or metabolic syndrome have been diagnosed. While several studies link obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome to the risk and progression of CRC, insulin resistance as a risk factor in its own right is often overlooked.
Surprisingly, insulin resistance can drive metabolic changes very early in life and depends on several early-life external factors to which the individual is exposed. 'For example, the overuse of antibiotics or supplements disrupts the microbiome of a pregnant mother, leading to insulin resistance that could also affect the fetus,' said Prof. Busselberg. Environmental factors and minor dietary and lifestyle choices may contribute to insulin resistance, which can play a role in the occurrence of EOCRC.
Ms. Elizabeth Varghese, a senior research specialist, is the other author of the paper, titled 'Complexity of insulin resistance in early-onset colorectal cancer'. The paper also infers that managing insulin resistance through dietary and/or lifestyle changes and therapeutic interventions is likely to be effective in reducing the incidence of colorectal cancer among young individuals.

Additionally, university students were also advised to study and work from home. The ongoing heatwave also caused several electrical wires to catch fire across the country, as electricity usage spiked from prolonged air conditioner use.

AUB GHI and IOM MENA to Advance Joint Efforts on the Climate–Health–Migration Nexus in the Region

The Global Health Institute (GHI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), convened a forum titled "Navigating the Climate–Health–Migration Nexus: A Forum for Bridging Policy, Research, and Action in MENA." The event brought together academic institutions, UN agencies, humanitarian actors, and civil society organizations to address the urgent intersection of climate change, public health, and human mobility in one of the world's most vulnerable regions.A key outcome of the forum was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between GHI and IOM, solidifying a long-term partnership focused on advancing research, policy, and joint action at the climate–health–migration his opening address, Dr. Shadi Saleh, founding director of AUB GHI, emphasized that climate change is one of the most pressing health threats of our time, particularly in fragile settings like many countries of MENA. He warned that health systems across the region are increasingly unable to absorb the compounded impacts of climate-related disease burdens, displacement, and social inequities. He noted that the Cli-Health Program (CHP) at GHI addresses this nexus by working across sectors with partners like the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) and the Asfari Institute for Civil Society and Citizenship at AUB, as well as IOM and others, to translate knowledge into actionable, equitable solutions. In parallel, Nour El Arnaout, associate director at AUB GHI, presented GHI's growing portfolio under the Cli-Health Program, which examines this nexus with a focus on justice, resilience, and vulnerable populations. She also announced the upcoming launch of an online, self-paced certificate on climate and health designed to equip learners with tools for addressing climate-related health challenges through practical, context-specific Michela Martini, senior regional thematic specialist on migration health at IOM MENA, stated that the intersection of climate, health, and migration is a defining challenge of our time and remains significantly understudied, particularly in regional contexts. She highlighted that IOM's collaboration with academic institutions such as AUB is essential to generate evidence-based, gender-sensitive, and locally grounded responses that contribute to filling the gap. Along the same line, Masako Ueda, regional climate action and mobility specialist at IOM MENA, emphasized that climate change is a growing driver of both displacement and health risks, disproportionately affecting migrants and displaced populations due to systemic vulnerabilities and inequitable exposure. She called for greater coordination, stronger policies, and continued leadership from institutions in the from the presentations, the forum featured two thematic panels. The first, moderated by Dr. Michela Martini, addressed evidence gaps and policy needs. Dr. Kenza Khomsi, climate and environmental health expert from Morocco, warned that extreme climate hazards now pose direct and escalating public health threats. Yara Mourad, director of programs at IFI at AUB, called for regional cooperation and the integration of inclusive, gender-sensitive climate-health-migration policies into national agendas. Roula Majdalani, senior advisor on sustainable development at the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), underscored the role of disaggregated data in addressing displacement and climate-induced vulnerability in countries like Lebanon and Jordan. Dr. Lucia Barcellini, technical officer for refugee and migrant health at the World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean (WHO EMRO), emphasized the need to integrate migrants and displaced populations into national health systems and planning processes, with a whole-of-government second panel, moderated by Nour El Arnaout, focused on localizing the climate–health–migration nexus through community, civil society, and humanitarian action. Nora Achkar, chief of the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) Regional Office for Arab States, discussed the importance of inclusive disaster risk reduction strategies rooted in local realities. Kassem Chaalan, director of the Disaster Risk Reduction Unit at the Lebanese Red Cross, presented their nationwide community-based disease surveillance initiative, designed to detect outbreaks linked to climate-related risks. Abeer Abou Zaki, youth and adolescents development specialist at United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Lebanon, emphasized the leadership of youth in driving climate action, including youth-led policy proposals and advocacy efforts. Pamela DiCamillo, head of programs at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Lebanon, highlighted the gendered impacts of climate-driven displacement and the urgent need for mobile health services and gender-responsive policies. AMMAN — The Jordanian field hospital in in northern Gaza responded on Monday to an urgent humanitarian appeal made by a local journalist seeking a vital medication for his wife, which had completely run out in local markets and was only allowed to enter in very limited quantities. A statement from the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army (JAF) said that the hospital's medical and administrative teams took 'immediate' action upon receiving the plea, and secured the treatment and delivered it directly to the patient, amid the challenging conditions and severe shortages of medicines and medical supplies in the war-torn Strip. The hospital force commander said that the initiative reflects Jordan's humanitarian duty towards Palestinians in Gaza and aligns with the noble mission carried out by JAF to alleviate the suffering of civilians. He added that the medical teams continue to provide healthcare and meet urgent treatment needs despite the significant challenges facing the healthcare sector there, the statement said. Jordan runs two military field hospitals in Gaza, one in the Strip's north, which was established in 2009 following the war in 2008, and the other in its south in Khan Younis, which was established in November 2023 at the peak of the Israeli war of aggression on the coastal enclave that erupted on October 7, 2023. Besides the field hospitals in Gaza, the JAF established the Jordanian field hospital in Nablus in late November 2023. The Israeli occupation on Sunday assassinated six journalists and photographers in an airstrike targeting their tent near Al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, as part of a systematic criminal approach aimed at suppressing press freedom.
